Chapter 63: Your Gift Helped

"My lord, are you trying to ruin my prospect of marriage in the royal family?" Olivia gritted her teeth. If not for the fear that this man would turn into an enemy, she would have never accepted his proposal.

She had enough offers to convince Edward to marry her. But she still needed a chance to convince him. Meeting Edward was not so easy. "If you are trying to weaken my position so that... ouch!" Olivia rubbed her nose and glared at his broad back. Since she was paying attention more to the path, she did not notice him stopping.

"Are you trying to take revenge or what?" she did not understand why he had brought her to this dark part of the mansion. She could not see where she was keeping her feet.

"Even if you don’t like it, do not show it on your face." The voice was grim but it only left her bewildered. Before Olivia could ask what it meant, Damon opened the door in front of her.

Olivia had not even noticed there was a door until he opened it. It looked like a large hall. Has it always existed? She had never been to this place before.

There were large tables in the large halls. Many knights were sitting on it with wooden glasses of bear cheering and laughing.

When the door opened, they paused and stared at the lady in confusion.

"She is the one who orffered rations to us and made the maps for us. Our victory is devoted to her." Olivia froze at her place. She stared at him with widened eyes but he did not turn to look at her.

The crowd cheered after his declaration. Laughter and applause filled the room. Olivia stared at all those people. They were destined to die in the long war. But all of them had returned safely.

Like her, they are family of someone. They must be, son, husband and father. Their family depends on them for their future.

She remembered the gloominess of the manor after the war continued for years.

"They all would have died if not for your help. This victory is devoted to you. So why are you crying?" Olivia touched her face. She did not even realize when she started to cry.

As she stared at their faces full of gratitude something in her shifted. She did not want to save them. She had only thought about... she shook her head and ran out of the room.

Damon frowned as he watched her leaving back.

"I have told you she is not the one. How could her grace’s sister be our savior when..." the knight paused when Damon glared at him with cold eyes. The man bowed his head instantly.

"The maids would bring more barrels if needed. Tonight, the feast will not end." The knights cheered again.

Damon shared a glass before returning to the party. A strange uneasiness filled his chest. Those tears of relief, pain and guilt were not fake. Olivia was not as simple as she seems.

He needed to meet her, talk to her. His eyes scanned the whole party hall with strange anger building in his chest. He paused when he finally noticed her. She was leaving the party holding Edward’s hands.

"My lord, your grace has called for you." Damon stiffened at once. He gave one last glance to Olivia before leaving with the servant.

His father was sitting with the crown prince Elio. Everyone knew that the duke was planning to support the second prince Edward since Duke Lenhart supported the crown prince. They would not get much favor even if they joined the crown prince’s team.

"Damon!" his father pointed at the seat beside him. "Your highness has taken a liking to you. He had been offered a position in the palace. You are lucky." lucky? Damon was the first son of the duchy, he should be the heir of the Aykroyd estate.

Yet his father believed that it was luck that he was selected to serve the royal family. Could he be any more blatant that he was unwanted here.

"Your highness!" Damon still bowed with a lack of expression on his face. Elio pointed at the seat again.

"I know that my request is inconsiderate. I was surprised that Duke Aykroyd had accepted it so easily. But I will not force you for the position, Damon. I want to know your opinion." Duke Aykroyd frowned at once.

"Your highness, that is not necessary. My son had chosen a separate path from the dukedom when he decided to be the knight. He is not fit to handle administration anyway. I am training my second son well for the position. In a decade, he would be able to take my position. It would only be a matter of pride if Damon would serve the empire. As a knight, it is his duty." Damon’s hands clenched into a fist.

He never remembered choosing a sword. He was compelled to do it when assassins kept attacking him and his father turned a blind eye to it. Then he was sent to war at a tender age and since then.. Damon casted those thoughts away.

"I wish to discuss this matter in private, if you may allow your highness." Elio stared at duke Aykroyd at once. The man’s face turned. His hands rose to slam the table but he retreated in the presence of the crown prince.

"Very well!" he glared at Damon as if they were enemies, "no matter how much you grow up, you are my blood." he patted Damon’s shoulders with crude force before standing up and leaving.

The table fell silent. Elio watched Damon carefully. He had only offered the position to test the stand of Duke Aykroyd. After all, the duchess’s sister was blatantly seducing the second prince. But who would have thought, their elder son was discarded like an old rag. Now he did not know how to continue.

"Lord Aykyord.."

"Which position are you offering me, your highness?"
