Chapter 47: Possible Choices

"It has been a long time since you danced, your majesty. I am honored." Gabriella’s facial expression did not change but he could see ridicule in her eyes.

"What can I do? Even at this age my son did not stop worrying me. And here I thought he is ready to take his responsibilities. What! Are you mesmerized by her charms? Enough to forget.." She looked around and did not continue. Even the air had ears in the royal palace. And this much warning should be enough for his foolish son.

"I have confirmed a meeting with the daughter of marquis Grienelia. You are going to dance with her next." her words were resolute with no place for argument. Edward felt a stifling feeling in his heart.

Even if he wanted to explain, this was neither the time or place and he himself did not know why he was feeling like that.

Looking at his face, her eyes hardened.

"Foolish child, she is the spawn of barron Witherland. A ruined family. There is no guarantee that Duke Aykroyd would support us. Though Grienelia is a marquis, Isabella is his first daughter and dotes on her too much. If things went well.. You should understand that beauty is not everything. And that girl has her own charms." Looking at her hard eyes, Edward could only bow and accept.

Finally her eyes softened a bit and she smiled at him as they finished their dance.

Edward followed his mother closely as they left the dancing stage and greeted various guests. They stopped in front of the marquis table. A tall and athletic young girl was sitting there. She had no charms of a girl but her actions were more suited for a knight. Even the gown did not suit her enough.

"Your majesty." the girl bowed her head at once. "May the blessings of the moon goddess be shown on you." Gabriella tilted her head to meet the eyes of her son who nodded.

"Lady Isabella, I heard that you had qualified as the first female knight of the empire. I could not help myself but congratulate you personally. You have proved that girls are equally strong." her voice flickered a bit showing even she did not believe those nonsensical words. Yet she smiled like it was the plain truth.

But who would have thought Isabella to be so naive when it comes to politics. Her eyes shone brightly and she thanked Gabriealla again and again with a warm heart. She even told the whole process of her selection and her gallant acts until her father Marquis Grienella coughed from behind.

Only then did the girl turn to look at her father and realized she had made a mistake. She let go of the queen’s hand and smiled awkwardly.

"That is alright. Young people had a lot of energy. It is just that I have caught on at my age. How about you tell the rest of the story to my son? He wanted to meet you too." she finally pointed at Edward.

The young prince was standing silently from the start. His presence was long forgotten by the girl. She blushed when she noticed mirth in his eyes.

"This, your highness." Marquis laughed looking at his daughter blushing for the first time. It was a rare sight and he wanted to cherish it.

"Go on, Isabella. Since you are feeling stifled. How about you go for a walk with your highness. He enjoys the knight’s stories too much." Isabella blushed. Her father had already told him that she might get married to the second prince.

At that time, she had not taken the words seriously but now, she could not help but feel thrilled. Her heart raced as she nodded and held his extended hand.

Getting an encouraging look from her father, she followed Edward.

"Would you like to dance, lady Grienella?" he asked with a charming smile but the girl was not sure.

"How about we go for a walk instead as my father suggested. I am not that sure about dancing." Edward chuckled. This girl! She was too simple and straightforward.

A girl like her could never survive in the royal palace. Royal palace needed someone shrewd and calculative. Just like.. He was stunned when Olivia’s mind and figure flashed in his mind. He shook his head lightly when he noticed her eager gaze.

"Of course, anything that the lady likes." he nodded at his knight and a maid and a knight followed them out of the large hall.

Hundreds of gazes followed his every action. One of them belongs to Elio, the first prince of the empire.

"Your highness, you seem too concerned. Who did not know that my brother in law only likes to play with the girl’s hearts. He is in no mood to settle on a girl." her soothing voice was full of concern and assurance. Elio finally took his gaze away from the leaving couple.

"Yet, we both know that he was only fooling around in name. He was trying to find an ally that could win him my position. And marquis Grienella had that power." his face hardened at once but the girl in his arms only smiled as if she did not care at all.

"Amber!" he sighed looking at her confidence.

"Even if the family had a history of creating the best knights for the empire. My father held all the power of administration. No one can shake his power except Duke Aykroyd. As long as your brother -in -law did not intend to marry a five year old girl, you have nothing to worry about." but her words did not make Elio feel better. He only felt more concerned remembering the beautiful girl from before.

"Olivia!" The name felt like a curse in Amber’s ears. Her expressions finally changed and she laughed.

"A sister in law! Do you think Duke Aykyord would go against my family and break ties just to support his sister in law. Who did not know what that woman had used to get her position. How could her sister be any better? A sane man would never choose her."
