Chapter 37: Ashen Face

"You are too kind of a baroness. I heard that you needed to go early today, go ahead! After all, you are working overtime starting tomorrow. One day would not hurt." Maybelline gulped. She had not even whispered that she needed to go out early. How did Olivia know about it!

Could it be that a devil had possessed her body? Olivia rolled her eyes, looking at Maybelline’s ashen face.

"It is written all over your face, Baroness. If you are tired like this, I might change my mind." the woman flustered and bit her lips. But holding her dress she left hurriedly with a nod.

It looked more like she was running away.

"Wow! Could you see that! The prim and proper woman who had always scolded me to run was running away like ghosts are following her." Leo walked closer and stared at leaving Maybelline with astonishment.

Olivia laughed amused and then pulled his ears.

"You little..! Why were you not studying, huh?" looking at the narrowed eyes of his aunt, Leo stopped wriggling and lowered his head in embarrassment.

"She hit Abi with her stick. I told her I will study once Abi is treated. She did not let Abi apply the medicine, so..." he shrugged, making Olivia sigh.

"What if she had beaten you too, you fool!" She did not know how to deal with this hot-tempered child.

She let go of his ears and walked to Abi.

"Where did it hurt, Abi?" Abi bit her lips feeling guilty. She always created trouble for her aunt and her brother.

If not for her,

"I tried my best to learn the music of my aunt. But the beat was not simple and I wanted to learn what Leo was learning instead. So my mind deviated." her eyes brimmed with tears as she tried hard to control them.

"Silly girl! You were not crying and explained when she scolded you and beat you but now you are explaining to us. Do we need your explanation? You should have slapped back that I’ll be a woman." Leo glared at her sister for being afraid of their governess.

Abi did not explain. She let Olivia find the ointment first and then lifted up her dress lightly. There were marks of wooden kane on her knees.

Olivia flinched looking at the red marks turned blue. Some of them even oozed blood.

"She has specifically chosen this part so that no one could see it. Even if Abi complained later, they would think it was just a light punishment." Leo’s hands clenched into a fist. He wanted to beat that woman back.

Abi did not whisper a complaint as her aunt applied the ointment on her knees. She stared at the book Leo was reading earlier.

"Aunt, why do we study different things?" She wanted to study what her brother was studying. She did not want to play piano or stitch her handkerchief.

She wanted to learn chess with him. And she wanted to do calculations like him.

"You can learn anything you want, Abi. From now on, you will command your governess and she will follow them. As long as it is about learning, she will teach you everything you desire. And she would never beat you again." Oliva pulled the young girl in her arms and hugged her tightly.

It might look simple but it was a great achievement for her. Abi had been beaten very well. She might not have expanded the kids’ life yet, but she had stopped the abuse they were facing!

"No one will ever beat you again. Leo, if she even raises her hands or sticks, remind her that I will return with just one call." the young boy nodded with gleaming eyes.

He was hardly beaten but his sister had suffered way too much.

"Even if you do not want to learn Abi, I will protect you for my whole life. So you can do whatever you want, alright?" Olivia stared at the young child full of devotion and care.

For all his life!? If only he knew! No, she had to stop Damon. But for that, she had to stop Oriana first.

She did not even know how he was faring at his estate. She vividly remembers that he had returned with wounds and marks all over his body. His face and body was covered in blood. He did not return to the manor in the estate, but he had come straight here as if he wanted to show his face and body to the duchess!

As if he was warning her that he had the ability to cut heads without hesitation. If only Oriana had learnt to feel fear from his gruesome actions.

"But how do you know about her? Did you spy on her? But you do not have the resources to do so? And you could not have followed her personally. Then..?" looking at Leo’s frowning brows, yet thrilling eyes, she wondered how the child would grow up!

What profession would he take? Would he be a strong knight like Damon or a shrewd administrator like his father? No matter what he would become, she would make sure that he had a happy and secured life.

"Aunt! Tell me." she smiled and pinched his cheeks again making him scowl.

"I just heard some gossip at your birthday party. It was an intuition but I knew the baroness was worried since she could not give birth to a son yet." Leo had a doubtful look on his face making Olivia smile heartily.

"Why are you laughing? No one cracked a joke." Leo suddenly felt embarrassed as if he knew he was the source of her amusement. He forgot his doubts easily in that frown.

"Oh no, my lord. I am laughing because you are chatting so leisurely, completely forgetting that you have sword wielding lessons. I wonder if you will be punished this time." Leo’s eyes widened. He stared at the window where the sun had reached their heads.

"Oh good lord!" the child gasped and ran out of the room making Olivia laugh again. Abi stared at his leaving figure worriedly,

"Aunt, would my brother be punished?

"Nah, no one will be punished ever now."
