Reborn, Its Time To Save My Family And.. My Enemy! -
Chapter 230: The Same Fate!
Chapter 230: The Same Fate!
"No one trusts you, do they?" she said, in a low and deliberate voice. "That’s why you are here, sitting in the dark with a half-conscious prisoner. You think you are important, but you are nothing more than a disposable pawn. You would never know the secrets your family share with your sister. You have enough brains to be useful, not enough to be trusted."
"You’re only sent to clean up after them. They wouldn’t even tell you everything, would they? You are always the last to know. You always pretend you are in control, when deep down, even you know you are not."
His eyes darkened instantly, his hands curled into a fist as he hissed.
"Shut your mouth you damned woman! You have been thrown out of your manor the moment your husband died! And you are telling me my position, speak all you want. But you would be the biggest pawn in our hands by tonight." Oriana bit her lips. She tried to speak more but he only laughed and knocked on the window.
He signalled her to take the chance if she could. Oriana scrambled to the window, her breath ragged as she flung it open. But the moment the cold air hit her face, she froze.
There were four knights riding beside the carriage. Their swords gleamed faintly under the moonlight. They turned to look at her as soon as they noticed the door swung open.
"Go on!" Elric whispered behind her. "Try to run away after fooling me. I want to see you try!"
She cursed under her breath and pulled the window closed again. If she jumped now, they would catch her. she would be dragged back before she could scream. Oriana backed into the corner of the carriage, heart hammering.
"What happened to the witch? Giving up the chance to run away!" He mocked her with a smirk on his face. Oriana looked away mumbling something. No one noticed that she had let go of her broch the moment she had gasped and closed the window.
If they were following her, at least they have a lead now.
Elric chuckled, leaning back with an arrogant tilt of his head. "That’s right. Sit there quietly like the offering you are. All that fire in you is wasted right now. You should be grateful. After tonight, you’ll be remembered. The first blood witch reborn in decades."
—--
"Do you think we can find her! It has been half a day but there is no lead!" Olivia felt frustrated. She could not imagine what Oriana was facing! If something happened to her, would she be able to handle the kids?
Suddenly, Damon yanked the reins, bringing his horse to a halt.
"What is it?" Olivia asked quickly, pulling up beside him.
He didn’t answer immediately. He had already dismounted, crouching near a dip in the road where the carriage wheels had churned up the mud. His fingers brushed something metallic, half-buried in the dirt.
He held it up slowly, and Olivia’s breath caught.
"That is.."
"My father’s ring! Oriana never took it off. She said it proved that my father wanted her to take the authority of the house." he murmured softly.
It was a large diamond insignia. It shone even in the dirt.
"She was here," Damon muttered, his voice low and tense. "She dropped this."he looked at the long path going ahead and then touched the fading marks in the mud.
"It must have been two hours or more. We need to hurry."
He turned to mount his horse again, "you should go and inform Thistle. This is the path they have taken." but Olivia refused to back away.
"No, I will not go without my sister!" She mounted her horse and kicked it, making Damian sigh and follow her.
—-------
The carriage came to a shuddering halt, the creak of its wheels replaced by eerie silence. Elric yanked Oriana out of the carriage, his grip bruising on her arm.
"Move," he hissed. She stumbled forward but her legs were stiff from the long ride. Her eyes darted around and her heart pounding in her chest.
At the far end of the clearing, many women in dark cloaks stood in a semi-circle. They were murmuring something in unison. Their voices blended together in a chant that seemed to vibrate in the air itself. Olivia felt the recognition. They all had fierce red hair. It might be dark or just like a lighter shade of strawberry gold. They all held their hands making a circle while staring at the sky.
Her breath hitched by just looking at them. Elric shoved her toward the stone circle near the altar, where crude iron posts had been driven into the ground. A long chain and manacles lay waiting. With practiced ease, he bound her wrists and ankles to the cold stone pillar, forcing her to kneel. She winced but did not cry out.
She noticed she was not alone there. Twelve missing girls from the village were bound here with her. They have formed a circle too around her. They all looked ashen and gaunt. Their eyes swollen from all the crying. The oldest couldn’t have been more than sixteen. While the youngest was only eight.
one of the girls looked up with tears streaking her face. "Are they going to kill you with us?"
Oriana’s throat tightened. But she forced herself to stay steady, to soften her voice. "No," she said firmly, despite the bile rising in her throat. "I promise, I won’t let that happen. Soon there would be people coming to save us." but the girls did not believe her.
Perhaps, they have already waited long enough.
"The girls which were brought before us were killed two hours ago. Their blood was brought there." the girl’s hands were tied. She could not move easily. But she pointed at the witches, oriana felt her throat burning and she nodded back.
"But you will never face the same fate!"
