Chapter 203: Marry Your Nephew!
Chapter 203: Marry Your Nephew!
Olivia stirred, the warmth against her cheek felt surreal. It took her a second to remember where she was. When her eyes opened, the first thing she saw was Damon. his face inches away from hers, eyes closed, lips parted slightly, his breath warm against her forehead.
For a moment, she didn’t move. Shewatched the faint lines of exhaustion under his eyes. How many nights had passed like this? How long had he been keeping watch while she slept, pretending to be stronger than he was? And how long was it going to continue?
"You’re staring again," Damon murmured suddenly, eyes still closed.
She jolted, heart leaping. "I thought you were asleep."
"I was," he said, opening one eye slowly, a teasing glint in it. "But I always wake up when you start admiring me like a painting."
Olivia scoffed, cheeks heating. "Your grace, you have developed delusions too."
But he only chuckled, and before she could retreat, he caught her hand and tugged her closer, his arm slipping around her waist.
"You’re warm," he said, burying his face in the curve of her neck. "I’m keeping you."
"Damon—"
He kissed the nape of her neck slowly. His breath lingering on her skin and she froze, her breath catching in her throat. His closeness was maddening, too gentle, too dangerous.
Then, a sharp knock broke through the stillness.
"Lady Olivia, my Lord—" It was one of the knights from the journey. "Everyone is ready to leave."
"We are coming." reluctantly, he let her go.
When they stepped out, the wind was sharp with morning chill, snowflakes beginning to swirl in the sky.
At the door, Eldes from vassal families waited alongside Leo and Abi. Olivia noticed how they were smiling on something Leo had said in passing.
The boy was looking at them in confusion but they still tried to start a conversation to the point it looked forced. Her eyes narrowed and she looked at Damon. But he had a smug look on his face.
She sighed. The elders think they were using Damon. But she was sure Damon was pulling them into his trap.
When they heard footsteps, they stopped and bowed their heads. But their eyes stopped on Olivia with a look that showed disgust. Both sisters were alike. But Olivia was more degraded! Why had she emerged from Damon’s room? Why had she been sleeping with her... nephew?
She lifted her chin and walked past them with a grace that silenced them but the mockery in their eyes could not be hidden.
"Are you better now?" Leo looked at her with worry as she bent and took Abi in her arms.
"I am good. Can you feel the cold, Abi? Soon, we will see snow." the girl smiled warmly with her big eyes shining brightly. Leo held her hand and Damon followed them silently as they went for their carriage.
The vassal family watched with narrowed eyes how Olivia controlled both Damon and Leo. no matter who they chose, they have to be in Olivia’s good books. Or... make sure they hate Olivia first.
As the carriage started slowly, Olivia and Abi had their eyes glued on the window with eyes gleaming.
"Is that snow?" the girl whispered, taking out her hand from the window. "I’ve never seen it before."
"Neither have I," Olivia admitted softly, watching the flakes settle on Abi’s palm like fragile whispers. The cold bit at her skin, but she didn’t mind. It was... beautiful.
The carriage moved slowly because the roads were covered in snow. There was hardly any other carriage around. A few people rode horses, but they looked different.
As they rode, Damon knocked on the window, urging them to stop the carriage. Olivia looked at him in confusion and noticed his gaze on the four horsemen.
The four knights sat astride black horses, each one armored in dark steel with Rhistel’s crest gleaming on their cloaks—a crescent moon over a coiled serpent.
The lead knight dismounted when the carriage stopped,
"My lord, we are here to make sure that you arrive at the manor safely. Please let us guide you." Damon nodded and the coachmen slowly followed the carriages.
"Oriana knows that we are coming?" For some reason, Olivia went stiff just thinking about it. What if Oriana took it as betrayal. There was no way she did not hear whispers when elders had come so far to take her back.
"Yes, and I am sure she would not put you in trouble." Damon watched the kids. They were still looking at the snow. But he knew their eyes were stranded on their conversation.
"She only wanted her children because she missed them. I am sure she had forgotten past arguments and bitters. I heard she will get married in a week." Leo gasped, his chest tightened and he looked at Damon with shock,
"Did that mean we are going to live here from now on?" but then why were the vassal family giving him so much importance? No matter how much he tried, he still could not trust Damon. So, he turned his gaze to Olivia.
"You can live wherever you want. No one will stop you." she assured him in a soft voice. "But I want you to give your mother a chance. If she has not changed, I will take you with me." she promised and finally his shoulders slumped a bit.
He nodded as he exhaled.
"Do you trust the northern duke?" he asked again and Olivia wondered how much had the child suffered to be this mature.
"No, we do not. But Oriana had chosen her. And we have no choice but to see what made her trust him." She pulled the boy in his arms and ignored Damon’s protest as she settled him between them.
"Leo, keep your eyes and ears open but do not trust everything you see. If you face any trouble, you can come to me. You know that right?" the young boy hesitated.
"But.. if me and my mother did not stay here, you would not be able to marry Damon. He will be called your nephew!"
