Chapter 197: You Should Be Proud.
"Are you sure you need these herbs, my lady?’ Olivia paused. She looked down to see the leaves had dried and would not bring much results.
The seller frowned at Cyan and looked at Olivia with a fawning gaze.
"He did not know, my lady. But these herbs work better after drying. Since you are so wise, I will give you a special thirty percent discount and a vial of rosemary essence free." his eyes gleamed with joy but Olivia stood up instantly letting go of the dried leaves.
She walked out of the shop without checking other materials.
"Hey! Come back, we can still discuss the price." the man shouted behind her. But Olivia did not pay anymore attention.
She walked out of the market with hasty footsteps as if demons were chasing behind her. But instead of returning to the carriage, she sat on a boulder and sighed.
"You seem tense." the man spoke in a low whisper as he studied her.
Olivia’s shoulders trembled.
"I am just overwhelmed." she offered a small forced smile, "when Shaya told me that she was returning today with whatever i had ready, i thought i will fail her." Cyan watched her intently but did not comment. He did not move either. He stood in front of her looking at her.
Olivia hugged her arms around herself, her voice dropping to a whisper, "I fear that the ointments and salves I made... they are not as good as Shaya thinks. She has so much hope, and I—" she shook her head, her throat tightening, "—I don’t want to disappoint her."
For a moment, the only sound was the distant chatter from the marketplace and the soft rustling of the wind against the trees. Cyan remained still, his shadow stretching over her like a quiet shield.
Then, finally, he spoke, his voice steady and sure, "No one could make it better than you."
Olivia looked up, startled by the quiet certainty in his tone.
"Even if they try," Cyan continued, his gaze firm, "even if they steal your recipes, even if they follow every instruction you wrote, they will never create what you create. Because it is not just the ingredients you use... it is you. Your touch makes them special."
For a moment, neither of them moved. Olivia stared at the ground, her fists clenching the folds of her skirt. Then slowly, she exhaled,
"You know who I am?" The taste of betrayal hit her raw. Like a fool she had believed that she had impressed Shaya in some way. She had won her friendship. But from the start, she was walking into their trap. They only entertained her because she was a witch. They wanted her powers.
Cyan watched the despair and rage covering her like the shadow of trees, she was enveloped in complete darkness when Cyan gave a brief nod, his expression unreadable.
"But we only needed help. We never meant to hurt you." He said nothing more, but he took a step closer, as if standing guard while she gathered herself again.
"Come," he said, his voice low. "We should return. This place is not very safe."
The driver straightened at their approach, opening the door quickly. Cyan helped her inside without a word, following her into the dim carriage. Olivia sat rigidly against the cushioned seat, her hands limp on her lap. But her mind—her mind was a storm.
How many of them knew? How long have they known what I am?
Her breath hitched. She pressed her fingertips against her temple as if she could press the thoughts away. Maybe not just Shaya. Maybe Rhistel knew too. Did he take Oriana to invite her or Oriana was like her? What if he wanted to harm both of them?
Her heart squeezed painfully. She gripped her skirt tighter. Was there ever a moment where they saw me as anything but a tool?
The carriage came to a halt with a rough jolt when it reached the Manor. Olivia sucked in a deep breath. Cyan stepped out first, glancing back only once before Olivia followed him down. and for a moment, she simply stood there, looking up at the estate, its windows lit like watchful eyes in the dusk.
"If you want to meet my wife, I will guide you there," he offered. She had long realized that he did not speak much. But at this moment, his silence was deafening. Yes, she needed answers before she started doubting every single person around her.
She nodded and followed him to the room he was sharing with Shaya. The woman was sitting leisurely on the sofa and having her wine. When she noticed Olivia following Cyan, her eyes flickered and then her face lit with a warm smile. "Olivia, you’re back! I was starting to worry."
Olivia’s voice was quiet, but it sliced through the thick air like a blade. "How long have you known?"
Shaya’s smile faltered, confusion flashing across her face. "Known? About what?" but the slight shift in her eyes and she questioned Cyan did not go unnoticed by Olivia.
Cyan moved and closed the door behind him.
Olivia stepped forward, each word bitter on her tongue. "That I am a witch."
Silence fell so fast it felt deafening.
Shaya’s lips parted slightly, as if to deny it—but then her shoulders slumped. She exhaled slowly, her expression softening into something almost regretful.
"Since the beginning," she said, no longer pretending. "Since the day we met."
The world seemed to tilt under Olivia’s feet. Her hands trembled at her sides.
"So it was never about me," she said, her voice breaking. "Only about what I could do."
"It depends on which moment you were talking about." Shaya shifted on the sofa, leaning leisurely without caring about the pretense anymore. "I did not mock the king and prince because you were a witch but you were a woman." she smiled. "You look scared of what you are. If I had been you, I would have been gleaming with joy at how I can take revenge on people who hurt me and help those who saved me. No?"
