Chapter 194: Watch Your Follies!

Chapter 194: Watch Your Follies!

Damon rushed from there, afraid of what would happen if he started. She could not know. She must not know or she would be more afraid.

But he barely made it past the hallway when his legs gave out beneath him. His hand caught the edge of a pillar, but his body refused to hold any longer. The pain was sharp, twisting, like a child’s hand twisting inside his chest as he collapsed with a muffled grunt onto the polished floor.

One of the guards saw him fall and cried out. Within moments, footsteps echoed through the manor as several servants rushed to his side. "Your grace."

"Call the physician. Now!"

Damon tried to push himself up, but his limbs trembled violently. Black spots danced before his eyes, and he could feel his heart stammering in his chest like a dying bird. He gritted his teeth, jaw clenched against the wave of nausea and weakness crashing over him.

"I’m fine," he rasped, but even his voice betrayed him.

The physician arrived not long after, out of breath and half-dressed, still shrugging on his robes. He knelt beside Damon, fingers pressing quickly to his wrist, then his neck, then over his ribs.

"Everyone, give us space," the physician ordered sharply. "Help me lift him to the room. Slowly!"

Damon was carried. A knight who had not fallen in battleground fell just after meeting the lady he was counting. Many exchanged glances as they carried him to his room. his vision dimmed with each step, and the last thing he saw was the ceiling of the manor swirling like a storm cloud.

The physician worked in silence for several minutes once they were inside. When the physician finally spoke, his tone was grave.

"Your pulse is faint. And there is bruising over the lower ribs which had caused internal damage, possibly to the lungs or liver. You must’ve taken a blow hours ago but the duel had prolonged my lord."

Damon’s jaw flexed. He remained silent.

"You’re bleeding inside, my lord. Slowly, but steadily. And if you keep straining yourself like this, it’ll be fatal."

Damon opened his eyes, bloodshot now. "Don’t... tell anyone. If my vassal or my enemies would know about it, it could be fatal."

The physician exhaled and nodded reluctantly. "Very well. But if the pain worsens or you faint again, I don’t even need to tell anyone before your spies would do it for you." The physician’s brows drew together. "You need rest. You need to stay in bed. And you’ll need another examination within the day."

Damon closed his eyes, hearing that echo in his head—Olivia’s voice.

"What if I’m the one hurting people now?"

He didn’t blame her. Whatever was inside her, whatever she feared she’d become... It was not her fault. She was more scared than him.

As the physician cleaned up and left the room, Damon’s thoughts drifted to her, the heat in her voice, the fear in her eyes, the trembling in her hands when she looked at him falling.

And for the first time, he wondered if maybe it wasn’t just fate she was running from. It was herself.

How long had it been, Damon did not know. His breathing felt stable now. But he did not move as he stared at the ceiling. He must be better by lunch.

When he heard the knock, he ignored it. It knocked twice and then the door opened without his permission. Two knights shouting and following a woman.

"It is fine, she can stay." They looked reluctant but left after giving Shaya a warning look.

Shaya stepped closer, eyes narrowing.

"You’re hurt," she said plainly.

"It’s nothing," Damon said quickly. "A scratch."

"A scratch doesn’t make a man collapse in the halls."

His hand stilled over the edge of the blanket. "Who told you that?"

"You forget that me and my men are living here completely?" she raised a brow as she walked closer and sat beside his bed. "I will make sure that Olivia does not know if that is what you are trying to achieve!" she looked at him again. There was no sign of a wound. But he looked pale and he was lying on the bed even when she was so close.

She had never seen Damon resting.

"Who did this?" Damon only stared at her calmly but the suspicion in her eyes did not go unnoticed.

"We were attacked," Damon lied smoothly. "On the road. wolves from the southern ridge. They caught us by surprise."

Shaya crossed her arms, her jaw tightening. "You’re lying."

His eyes flicked to her, calm but unwavering. "I’m not."

"Damon—"

"I don’t want Olivia to know," he said suddenly, cutting her off. His voice was low, almost pleading. "She would blame herself if he knew I injured myself saving her. That is all. Do not read too much into the lines."

She leaned in slightly, voice dropping. "I spoke to Rhistel."

That drew his gaze sharply.

"He believes she’s not just gifted," Shaya continued. "He believes she’s dangerous."

"She’s not," Damon said firmly, through clenched teeth. "She’s... frightened. And something is awakening in her, something she doesn’t understand."

"Then tell me what happened. Why are you bleeding inside? What aren’t you saying?"

"That is not part of our deal, Shaya. I have given what you wanted, you would leave taking it."

She leaned and placed a hand gently over him. "Beasts may not have done this, Damon. But monsters come in many forms. Some wear familiar faces."

"Would you believe it if I told you I am one of them? And if provoked, I will forget that we had any kind of deal." His tone was protective for a second and it was enough for her to be sure of her theory.

"I will check the progress of my medicines. If they are ready I will leave for my land tonight. Since you have completed the deal, I have no reason to stay here and watch your follies."
