Chapter 171: Choose me

"You’re here!" Olivia’s voice cut through the silence like a blade. Her eyes blazed with fury, and her words were sharp as daggers. "So you broke my engagement, shattered everything I’ve worked for. You’ve ruined it all, Damon!"

For the first time since her rebirth, Olivia didn’t bother to hide the burning rage that churned inside her. It was rare for her to lose control, but when she did, it was like a storm unleashed, and there was no holding it back.

"What have you done?" she demanded, her voice thick with accusation. "Do you even know what you’ve done? What have you cost me?" Her voice broke on the last word, a bitter edge to the syllables. She stood up from the chair where she’d been sitting, the book she had been reading tumbling to the ground, forgotten. Without a second thought, she started toward him, each step punctuated by the sharp click of her heels against the cobblestones.

The sound reverberated through the room, the tension thickening with every step she took. Damon stood rooted to the spot, his breath caught in his chest as he watched her. He was used to Olivia being calm, composed, even distant at times. But now... now she was something else. Something more dangerous. The fury in her eyes was like a wildfire. Her anger, a tempest he hadn’t anticipated.

"I’m sorry, Olivia," he said, his voice quieter than he intended. His words felt like a half-hearted attempt at an apology, one that he wasn’t sure he believed in himself. "I never wanted to hurt you—"

"Lies!" She snapped, cutting him off before he could finish. "Everything you’ve done has been to hurt me! To hurt all of us! You think I can’t see it?"

Her hands balled into fists at her sides, and for a moment, Damon thought she might strike him. But instead, she stood there, trembling with the weight of her rage. Her breath came in sharp, uneven gasps.

The words Rhistel had spoken echoed in his mind, uninvited, like an insistent drumbeat. You have caged a storm. Not a dove. Damon swallowed hard. Whistle had been right. Olivia wasn’t just a woman—she was something far more dangerous. But what terrified him more than her fury was the realization that, somewhere deep inside him, he didn’t want to cage her. He didn’t want to control her.

He wanted her.

"I became the Duke," he said quietly, almost as if speaking to himself. His voice was low, rough with emotion.

Olivia froze, her eyes widening in disbelief. She didn’t speak for a long moment, her gaze searching his face, as though looking for a sign that he was lying, that he was playing some cruel game with her. But there was no deceit in his eyes.

His words sank in, and Olivia’s breath hitched.

"Oh," she gasped, the shock evident in her voice. "Your grace." The title, so formal, so distant, was all she could manage as she fell into a quick, jerky bow.

Damon stood still, watching her, the tension in the room tightening with every second. Her reaction stung—he had expected something different, something... more. But she was still looking at him with that same cold detachment, as though he was nothing more than a stranger to her.

Her gaze flickered back up to his face, searching. "Your grace..." she repeated, the words tasting like ash on her tongue.

The formality of the title, the distance it created, the barrier between them—it was all too much. His chest tightened.

"Now," Damon said, his voice darkening, "will you marry me?"

The words hung in the air, heavy and laden with everything unsaid. He hadn’t expected the question to sound so desperate, so needy, but it did. It was the only thing he wanted now—to make her his. But as he stood there, waiting for her answer, he realized just how much he needed it to be a yes.

Olivia froze. She had been prepared for a lot of things, but this wasn’t one of them. The look in his eyes made her heart race, though she would never show it. The heat in his voice was unmistakable—his desire was raw, a hunger she could almost taste in the air.

But she was not going to let him see her weaken. She had to keep control, at all costs.

"I don’t want to marry you," she said, the words cold, calculated, and utterly false.

Damon’s breath hitched at her rejection. His chest felt like it had been pierced by something sharp, a twist of pain he hadn’t anticipated.

"Why?" His voice was quieter now, almost too calm, as he took a step forward, closing the space between them. His breath was hot against her skin, his presence consuming. The heat from his body radiated through her, and for a moment, she swore she could feel the fire between them flare again. But she wouldn’t let it burn her.

She didn’t want to feel this. She couldn’t afford to feel this.

"I don’t desire you," she said, forcing the words out, even though every part of her screamed to take them back.

His lips twisted into a smirk, as though he found some kind of sick satisfaction in her rejection.

"Yet you let me kiss you. Let me touch you," he said softly, his voice low, teasing, dark. "You kissed me back with an intensity I can’t even match."

She stiffened at his words, but refused to let him see her reaction. She could feel the heat of his hand on her waist, the warmth of his touch seeping into her skin, making her heart race even faster.

"I’m a grown woman," she managed, her voice icy. "I have desires. You ignite them, yes. But that’s all they are. Physical. Nothing more."

He didn’t let go. Instead, he stepped closer, his eyes never leaving hers. The smile on his lips was maddening. "And you don’t love me because...?"

She could feel his gaze burning into her soul, stripping away every layer of pretense she had built. His touch, the heat of his body, it was all too much.

"We’ve always been enemies,"
