Chapter 168: A New Bride

"You have lost your mind!" WIlliam gasped. "How could she marry again and who would marry her?" his eyes swept on the nobles and they all bowed at once.

Even if they were offered good wealth, they could not imagine getting married to Oriana. She was... used! She even has two children.

"Why! I am sure many of us will get married again when our spouse dies." Damon looked confused and William had to take another breath or he would snap.

He watched Shaya. When she looked shocked too, he continued.

"That is different. We are men." His words brought an amused look from Damon.

"I think women need men more than men need women." William nodded instinctively but realizing the meaning of Damon’s words, his face darkened.

His eyes narrowed. But the courtier returned before he could lash again.

William held his composure as he took the letter from the courtier. Read it and then nodded. He sighed it with the nib offered and stood up. This time with much elegance.

"Damon Aykroyd, the eldest son of Aykroysd family. After the death of your father, I announce that you would take his position and serve the empire as the new duke of Aykroyd." Everyone bowed their heads in front of the new power.

Damon inhaled a deep breath. How he wished Olivia was here. He paused, his eyes widened and then a helpless smile appeared on his lips.

He bowed his head and took the decree from william.

"From now onwards, I hope that you will take the position of your father in the court and serve us, Duke Aykroyd." Damon nodded and they all raised their heads and applauded.

The maids filled the room with hands full of alcohol. Wine glasses decorated every house.

"I could not give you a feast. But this much you deserve, Duke Aykroyd." William nodded with a pleased smile toward Shaya.

"Since you have chosen Damon to finalize the deal, I will look forward to it." Shaya nodded back.

"Your majesty, I will look forward to it too. My men have decided that we will show gratitude too." she nodded and one of his men came forward. He took out a large red ruby embed in a ring.

William’s eyes flashed looking at the rare red stone. That was the only reason he was bearing all their tantrums. The eastern land was full of rare gems and gold mines. With this trade, they could sell him mediocre things and still earn a lot of wealth.

His empire would flourish and this was proof of it. He did not care if he needed to sacrifice Damon for it and let that girl go. Though Olivia had a good knowledge of herbs and looked insightful. She was just a fallen novel. He never felt that he should marry Edward to her to earn that knowledge.

She would sell it for a few coins in the fire when Damon would be bored of her. Edward could use her as his mistress then. He never lacked women from the start anyways.

Now that he had sorted his thoughts, he did not feel fury anymore. He smiled at Shaya as the guards brought the ring for him. The ring was tight for his fingers. He still forced it on his index finger.

"I hope the ring fits, his majesty. I did not have the measurement so I was afraid, your majesty." WIllaim waved his hands looking joyous.

"Not at all, this ring fits perfectly. Thank you for such a gracious gift." Shaya bowed and just like that the dark and oppressive mood of the royal court filled with pleasant greetings and smiles.

The nobles were still not able to digest everything. But they knew when to smile and bow their heads.

Many came forward to congratulate Damon and exchange pleasantries with Shaya. Barabrains? What barbarians? This girl was well conversed. No matter which topic they start to insult, she knew the reply better than them.

She was well versed in music, art, paintings and even literary skill.. This girl knew they were literate too. But when they talked about hers, they looked like fools in front of her.

With the way her lips curl and she looks at them, they were sure she thought of them as a fool but did not speak of it to leave them some respect.

After a few of them were deeply humiliated. None of them approached her with ill intent.

William was taking a sip of his wine with a lesure look but his eyes were still on the gir. She was not a normal girl. He had looked into her background more. If his doubts were right, he had found a much better wife for Edward. One that would make them rich and powerful.

The feast lasted for two more hours. When they all finished their pleasantries and dragged the conversation for a long time, Damon looked bored. He walked to Shaya and whispered something in her ears. When she nodded, he returned to william.

William’s eyes narrowed and his grip on the glass tightened. He couldn’t let Shaya be impressed with Damon. He had to find a way to let her spend time with Edward.

He already had a plan in his mind.

"Your majesty, the boys wanted to return. They are exhausted after a long night’s travel and night visit. They..."

"Of course, but you still need to complete some formalities. And you owe an apology to my daughter too." William sighed. "I know that she could be haughty sometimes. But she is still hurt by your behavior. You must do it." Damon looked hesitant but he still relented, bringing a smile on William’s face.

"Good, you must go to the duke Histoire first and complete the formalities. I will ask Diana to come lookin for you." he waved his hands and then looked at Shaya. "I apologize to ask you to wait but it would be better that you rest in the guest rooms for one more day."
