Chapter 166: I Refuse!

The hall was oddly silent. Many nobles held their breaths when they watched Damon escorting eastern envoys to the royal court.

The face of the king was darker than pot and though he tried to control it, it was hard after knowing what happened in the duke’s manor this morning. The taste of betrayal was rancid and the king felt nauseated by it.

"Damon Aykroyd! What is the meaning of this?" The voice was like thunder shaking the heart of the nobles who waited with bated breath.

They wanted to know what had happened. Their ears itching for the gossip. But no one dared to ask the question and no one knew the right answer.

"Your majesty!" Damon bowed his head with a leisurely smile and languid posture. "I apologize for my mistake. The night market took a long time and the princess had taken the only carriage that returned to the royal palace. I did not have the separate carriage or horses to escort the envoys back to the palace. I left my manor at earliest to bring them here." the nobles exchanged glances.

They did not see any fault of Damon in it. If someone was to be blamed, it was the princess. He was only being a good host by providing them lodgings.

"Ha! You dare to take my daughters names so lightly when you have..." the king shook with rage but he did not dare to speak further.

Many nobles were staring at him. If he claimed that Damon was chosen for his daughter but he had refused the princes for a fallen noble, the royal family would become a joke. Nobles would laugh at them.

And he would have difficulty in finding a new groom for his daughter. He would never give Diana to Damon.

"Did i make a mistake, your majesty?!" William wanted to hold Damon by his throat and teach him a lesson. But he could only gulp his anger.

Damon knew this was going to happen that is why he did not come to apologize in private but choose to meet the public court. If William insulted Damon here, everyone would know what happened.

"You call it a mistake." William sneered. "It has only been a month since your father died, yet you are having an illicit affair with your aunt. Sister of your mother!" gasped filled the room and William smirked. Did the child who had just been an adult think that he could outwin him! He dares!

Whispers could be heard. Their eyes shifted to the change but Damon stood there with a calm smile on his face.

"This is my private matter, your majesty." he replied softly, not at all losing his composure. "I am afraid we have pressing matters to attend to first." the king scoffed at his calm demeanor.

It was nothing but a facade in his eyes.

"And what that might be? Your title which you have not received yet?" many nobles laughed softly. They have realized that the king did not like Damon.

Though they did not understand why a war hero and the strongest knight of the empire was the subject of the king;s wrath. Heroes born every day and a knight could be replaced. But the king, he was all mighty. They made the decision in a heartbeat and chose the king, insulting Damon.

"A man with such a low character! How could we expect him to protect our pride?" someone shouted out loud in the group. Many eyes turned to Syria, the only daughter of the marquis, a powerful pillar of the west.

The man was embarrassed that his daughter shouted crudely. But he did not feel remorse or guilt. The only issue was the voice was loud, it was not wrong.

Many gazes looked at Damon with conceited looks, but Damon did not react at all. He did not look at them as if he could not hear them.

"Your majesty! I tried to convince the envoys, but they refused. They wanted to return to their empire tonight."

"...." silence fell. The king looked stunned. He looked at Shaya. He was sure that the deal would be signed sooner or later. The barbarians were just lucky that they took birth in a land full of resources. They didn’t work hard to earn it. Yet they behave high and mighty when it comes to sharing those resources!

William had already planned the usage of gold and rare silk thread, the barbarians tribe would provide them.

"What is the reason behind your decision?" he slapped the table hard in front of him as he narrowed his eyes with a dominating voice. "Trade would flourish in both countries. A backward community like you would earn the chance to study in our empire and have a better life here." he claimed with disgust evident in his eyes.

"Do you even have the power to take such a big decision? I will advise you to return to your empire and discuss the matter with the royal family. Only they have the right to take such a major decision.

Or do you think you hold the power just because you were offered respect here." Shaya watched the man bark and act all high and mighty like the world depends on his light instead of the sun.

She wanted to laugh. But she had made a promise and she was going to fulfil it.

"I hold enough power to refuse you, your majesty. I request you to prepare for my return. I didn’t want to spend time in their empire anymore." the woman scoffed looking at the king as if he did not hold a candle in front of her.

"What is the reason for refusal then?" William’s hands clenched into a fist as he heard her haughty tone. He did not want to worsen the relationship or he would have taught this brat a lesson.

"Of course! The reason is we are not treated well in this empire. You see us as barbarians and treat us like one. Our empire would learn nothing but insults from this empire."
