Reborn in the 80s: She Rewrites Life with Radiance -
Chapter 29: Heartbeat
Chapter 29: Chapter 29: Heartbeat
"How could you not eat? Eat something, then go to sleep."
As soon as Ye Qian heard Gu Yi say he wouldn’t eat, she wanted to persuade him to go eat together.
"You guys go ahead and eat. I’ll take a shower and sleep a bit."
Ye Qian was about to say something else, but Ye Hao held her back.
"Enough, let your sister-in-law rest if she’s tired. The shower is at the end of the hall. You go wash up first, we’ll wait for you to be done and then go out. Do you need anything?"
"I’ve brought everything. You guys go ahead and eat. I’ll be fine alone." Gu Yi felt awkward having Ye Hao and the rest waiting.
"No worries, we’ll close the door for you, so you won’t be disturbed when we come back and you’re asleep."
Gu Yi thought he had a point, so she quickly gathered her things and took a quick shower.
"I’m done, you can go ahead now." Gu Yi said as she stood in the room.
Ye Hao knew she felt shy sleeping in front of him, so he left with Ye Qian.
As soon as they left, Gu Yiyi laid on the bed and soon fell asleep.
"Brother, hasn’t sister-in-law changed a lot? Apart from you, she’s the person I admire most now. She seems to be good at everything and does everything well. She’s great to our parents and to me too. Do you know why sister-in-law is so tired? She gave me the window seat and blocked people from bothering me. She didn’t sleep all night."
Ye Hao took Ye Qian to have noodles not far from the lodging. As soon as Ye Qian sat down, she started saying good things about Gu Yi.
"It’s rare for someone to earn your admiration; seems like your sister-in-law is indeed capable."
Listening to Ye Qian’s tone, Ye Hao understood that for her to say such words today, Gu Yi must treat them really well at home.
"Of course, mom also told me to tell you to be good to sister-in-law. If you upset her, mom will come to the barracks and deal with you. Mom always says she’s got good taste, that she picked a wife for you whom nobody in the surrounding villages can match. Even though mom puts me behind sister-in-law, it just shows how great she is. Brother, you should get along well with sister-in-law. We know you aren’t feeling good about it, but it’s done now. There are some people you should move past."
Ye Hao heard Ye Qian drifting off topic, "What ’some people’? What are you thinking about all day? My displeasure wasn’t because of Gu Yi, but because mom was forcing me to marry. I was just unhappy."
"Really, you didn’t like the girl who came home last time?" Ye Qian looked incredulous.
"I have no feelings for her, okay? Hurry up and eat, we’ll take some food back for your sister-in-law; she might not be asleep, and it’ll be just in time to eat."
Ye Hao worried Gu Yi might be hungry, so he urged Ye Qian to eat quickly.
When Ye Hao carefully opened the door, Gu Yi was already asleep. Ye Qian said she wanted to nap too, so Ye Hao told her to lock the door properly and he’d head back to the barracks, returning at night to take them out for dinner.
When Gu Yi woke up fully rested, it was almost dark. Ye Qian was also asleep on the other bed. She picked up a basin to go wash her face.
As she opened the door, Ye Hao was leaning against the wall, "Why are you standing here?"
Gu Yi then took a serious look at Ye Hao, and his face seemed very pleasant.
Though he didn’t smile often, when his eyes were on you, you couldn’t help but fall in.
Perhaps because he was a soldier, he always gave people a reliable feeling, making them naturally want to rely on him.
"You’re awake. I didn’t knock because I was afraid you didn’t sleep well. I just got here myself. Going to wash your face?" Ye Hao looked at Gu Yi holding the basin.
"Yeah, come inside and sit for a while, Qianqian is still asleep, keep quiet."
Saying this, she smiled at Ye Hao. As it was almost dark, the light in the corridor illuminated Gu Yi’s face, making her look particularly gentle.
Even years later, Ye Hao always remembered this evening when a girl’s gentle smile made him willingly follow her in later life.
Gu Yi walked with the basin, while Ye Hao felt as if his heart was being squeezed; not painful, just beating rapidly.
Gu Yi didn’t realize a certain someone behind her blushed and his heart raced because of her smile.
"Qianqian, are you awake? We’re going to eat."
Gu Yi gently called out to Ye Qian.
"I ate a lot this afternoon, I’m not hungry at all now. Sister-in-law, let my brother take you to eat."
Ye Qian said, turning over to sleep again.
"Alright then, let’s go eat." Gu Yi turned to Ye Hao.
"Alright, let’s go."
"What do you feel like eating? They have rice dishes and noodles here."
Ye Hao didn’t know what Gu Yi preferred.
"I want noodles, I haven’t eaten all day, and I want something easy to digest tonight. Are you okay with that?"
Ye Hao wasn’t particular about food; as long as he was full, he was good. He didn’t mind going for noodles with Gu Yi.
The two returned to the noodle shop where Ye Hao had lunch.
"What would the two of you like to eat?" The noodle shop owner quickly came up to greet them.
"Could you please give us two bowls of noodles, and add a poached egg to hers." Ye Hao sat down and called out to the owner.
Gu Yi smiled at Ye Hao but said nothing, and they quietly waited for the noodles.
The owner’s speed was impressive; soon, two bowls of noodles arrived. Ye Hao went to get some pickle and upon returning saw Gu Yi hadn’t started eating.
"Why aren’t you eating, is it not to your taste, or aren’t you feeling well?"
"No, it’s just a bit too much, I can’t finish. I haven’t started yet, let me first give you some."
The owner was very sincere, giving large portions, especially since soldiers frequent his place with hearty appetites. Gu Yi was dieting, so her stomach had shrunk, and such a large portion was surely too much for her.
After hearing Gu Yi, Ye Hao said, "You eat first, whatever’s left you can give to me."
He figured it was no big deal and started eating.
Gu Yi didn’t expect Ye Hao to say that; they weren’t that familiar, right?
She thought he was just being polite, but picked up her chopsticks and started eating, finding it quite tasty.
Gu Yi saw the bowl still half full and didn’t know what to do.
If she didn’t eat, it was a waste, and she felt bad giving Ye Hao her leftovers.
If she continued, she was too full, but as Ye Hao finished his noodles and looked up, he saw her looking troubled at her bowl of noodles.
"Are you full?"
"Oh, uh, yes, I’m full."
Ye Hao brought Gu Yi’s bowl to his front and quickly finished the noodles. Gu Yi watched Ye Hao drink the soup, thinking, wasn’t this an indirect kiss, and her ears turned red.
"Are you tired? Do you want to visit my barracks?"
Ye Hao finished eating, thought it was still early, and since Gu Yi had just woken up, she likely wouldn’t sleep so soon. It’d be a good time for a visit to the barracks.
Ye Hao was unaware that deep down, he wanted to take Gu Yi to meet his comrades.
"I can go, but is it appropriate for an outsider like me?"
Gu Yi rarely visited barracks in her past life and didn’t know their rules.
"Why wouldn’t it be? You’re my wife, not an outsider." Ye Hao blurted out without thinking.
Gu Yi paused for a moment upon hearing this, and Ye Hao realized what he said, feeling embarrassed, since calling Gu Yi that way was new when alone together, although they’d done so in front of others before.
