Reborn in the 80s: She Rewrites Life with Radiance -
Chapter 22: Giving Gu’s Mother a Heads-Up
Chapter 22: Chapter 22: Giving Gu’s Mother a Heads-Up
Gu’s mother poured a glass of water for Gu Yi and handed it to her, then pulled up a stool to sit down.
"How come you have time to come over today?"
Gu Yi took a sip of water and told Gu’s mother about the sprouts matter.
Gu’s mother didn’t think it was such a big deal. She only knew Gu Yi was selling sprouts, but Gu Yi hadn’t told her how many she could sell in a day, so Gu’s mother thought it was okay if she couldn’t sell them. At least Gu Yi could have a bit more free time.
"So what do you plan to do now?"
"I plan to let my in-laws continue with the sprouts, and I want to go to the county to see if I can find some work to do."
"Why go to the county? You’re a young girl; if there’s nothing to do, just stay at home. The Ye Family won’t let you go hungry."
Gu’s mother was not pleased to hear this. They always say a woman is better off marrying well than doing well herself. Ye Hao is one of the best young men in the whole town, and Ye Family’s parents are nice people too. Their family condition is better than most. Even if Gu Yi just stays home and helps out when busy, life is still quite comfortable. Why go out and suffer?
Gu Yi knew that if she mentioned it, her mom would disagree.
"Mom, you know Ye Hao and I don’t have much of an emotional foundation. If, and I’m just saying if, we can’t live together in the future..."
Gu’s mother immediately cut her off.
"Why wouldn’t you be able to live together? Didn’t your dad and I only meet on our wedding day? And haven’t we been doing just fine since?"
She didn’t know what Gu Yi was thinking. In the past, marriages were arranged without seeing each other, and they all turned out fine.
"Mom, listen to me. I’m just saying if. If that day really comes, I don’t want to wrong myself. I’m still young now; I don’t mind suffering or tiring myself out. But at least I can prove that I can support myself well, without relying on anyone else. Don’t you think so?"
Gu Yi originally didn’t plan to say these things, but thinking that day would surely come in the future, she might as well prepare Gu’s mother early.
Although she couldn’t accept it for the time being, if she said it enough times, it wouldn’t be too hard to accept when it really happens.
Gu’s mother listened in silence.
When she arranged the marriage, she just thought of finding Gu Yi a good family. Since the original Gu Yi didn’t talk much, she didn’t ask for her opinion, and just set it up.
Also, because Ye Hao was in the military, the marriage was rushed. The day after the wedding, Ye Hao returned to the army, and when visiting, Gu Yi went back alone.
Thinking about these things, Gu’s mother wondered if she had made a mistake.
No matter how good the young man or the in-laws are, a husband not being home often means less opportunity to connect with each other and little time to cultivate feelings. In times of crisis, distant help is not much use.
Gu Yi felt a pang of heartache seeing Gu’s mother’s worried and self-blaming face.
"Mom, I’m just imagining things, none of this has happened yet. Right now, Ye Hao and I are doing quite well. We even write to each other often. Please don’t worry. I just want to work harder so our kids can have a better life than us. Haven’t you and Dad been working hard for us too?"
"Alright then, if you want to go, just go. But if there’s anything difficult, you must tell the family. Don’t bear everything alone."
In the end, Gu’s mother couldn’t win over Gu Yi and compromised.
In the late afternoon, when the sun wasn’t too strong, Gu Yi went to the tailor’s shop in town to pick up the altered clothes and returned to the Ye Family.
As soon as she got home, Ye Qian came running out saying,
"Sister-in-law, sister-in-law, my brother wrote you a letter. It came after you left today. Go check it out, see what my brother wrote."
Ye Qian was quite happy. Her brother finally figured it out. She had written to him about everything happening at home and highlighted Gu Yi’s virtues. She just hoped her brother would realize Gu Yi’s worth and treat her well.
Recently, her brother’s frequency of writing letters had noticeably increased compared to before.
Gu Yi felt inexplicably bewildered upon receiving Ye Hao’s letter.
In her past life, he never wrote her a single letter. In this life, it was as if he’d become a different person, sending her letters regularly. Whenever there was a letter from him, Ye’s mother urged her to write back.
This was the second letter this month. From his letters, Gu Yi learned that he won the championship at the military competition for all troops in B City. His battalion also won first place as a team. Sometimes, he mentioned interesting events during his missions and trivial matters from his time in the army.
Gu Yi was puzzled; how could this life’s Ye Hao be so different from the one in her past life? Sometimes she wondered if her previous life was just a dream.
Gu Yi: How have you been lately?
Is there anything missing at home? If you need anything, just tell me. There’s a money order in the envelope, with your name on it. This is my allowance for the last three months. I used to send the allowance to Mom and Dad. Keep this money for yourself, and don’t overwork yourself at home.
Since the last mission was completed well, I’ve earned a spot to attend the military academy. The documents have been issued. I’ll be going to the military academy in three months.
Once I finish military school, my rank should be promoted again, and the allowance will increase.
Li Camp Commander said before I go to military academy, we’ll have a ten-day family visit leave. I’ll come back then.
Thank you for taking care of Mom and Dad, and be sure to take good care of yourself. Ye Hao
Ye Hao is going to military school. Gu Yi recalled that in her past life, Ye Hao also went, but it was a year later. What happened in between?
What Gu Yi didn’t know was that, in her past life, it was initially decided that Ye Hao would go. He was also the individual champion in the competition.
But another battalion won the group first place, and their battalion commander was the individual second place. The higher-ups decided that individual strength didn’t equate to true strength. Only being able to lead a strong team is what the army truly values. Eventually, Ye Hao was replaced and only went the following year.
This life, because of Ye Qian’s letter, Ye Hao became curious about Gu Yi. He really wanted to go back and see what kind of person the wife he married was, why she was different from his impression.
Even though Ye Hao wasn’t old, he was usually a good judge of character, but Gu Yi stood out as an exception.
The restlessness from wanting to return but being unable to was all vented through training. Even though his soldiers complained bitterly, the results were surprisingly good. They won the group first place, which is why Ye Hao was able to enter the military academy early this life.
Gu Yi, this little butterfly, was gradually causing things around her to deviate from their original paths.
"Mom and Dad, Ye Hao said he would come back in two or three months."
Gu Yi didn’t tell the Ye Family’s parents about Ye Hao going to military school.
She was afraid that if she mentioned it, and something happened that Ye Hao couldn’t go just like her past life, it would lead to unnecessary excitement for nothing. So, she just mentioned a bit.
"That’s great. I’ve missed him so much. When he first joined the army, he didn’t come back for two years. He was just a teenager then, and I couldn’t sleep at night, just hoping he’d come back. It’s much better now. At least he can come back once a year. Yiyi, stop standing there. Go write a letter back to Hao Hao. Tell him we’re all well, so he doesn’t worry."
Ye’s mother was overjoyed to hear Ye Hao would be coming back. What pleased her more was that the two kids were slowly interacting, even if it was through letters, but it was better than nothing.
