Chapter 89: Enter the Imperial Temptress

Chapter 89: Enter the Imperial Temptress

The jade imperial airship descended like a divine beast over the Burning Cloud Sect, casting its massive shadow over the mountain range below. Its hull shimmered with golden runes, engraved by the highest-ranking inscription masters of the Eastern Phoenix Empire. A thousand formation lights pulsed with a synchronized heartbeat—majestic, absolute, and terrifying.

At its helm stood a single figure.

A woman dressed in flowing robes of snow-white silk and phoenix-feather embroidery, her veil barely concealing the radiant beauty beneath. A nine-petal jade hairpin shimmered in her hair, signifying her identity to all those below.

Crown Princess Xuan Yuerong.

The woman whose mere name could silence sect leaders, destroy marriages, and make patriarchs grovel.

And now... she had come in person.

Wang Li stood calmly in the central courtyard of the Burning Cloud Sect, arms folded, heart steady.

Behind him stood Feng Yuling—cold and serene, her hands already glowing with frost.

To his left, Mu Qingling—golden flames flickering along her sleeves as she glared at the descending ship like she was about to set it on fire.

To his right, Lin Ruoyan—smiling like a poisonous flower, her fan lazily tapping against her palm.

Three calamities stood behind him.

And yet, the one descending... might be the greatest calamity of them all.

As the ship landed, a golden bridge of spirit-light extended to the sect grounds. From it stepped twelve maidens clad in phoenix-embroidered robes, and at their center, the veiled woman moved like a drifting cloud, her presence suppressing the very air.

The entire sect knelt.

Even the Sect Master of Burning Cloud trembled and bowed deeply.

"Greetings, Crown Princess Xuan Yuerong!"

Only one person did not kneel.

Wang Li.

He simply raised a brow.

"Didn’t know you’d come in person, Your Highness. That’s... excessive."

The sect gasped.

Mu Qingling facepalmed. "This idiot."

Feng Yuling didn’t move—though a corner of her mouth twitched.

Lin Ruoyan whispered, "Oh, this is going to be delicious."

Xuan Yuerong’s steps didn’t falter. She walked straight up to Wang Li until she stood only a few feet from him. Her veil fluttered with the breeze, giving a brief glimpse of a face that made the moon look plain.

"Wang Li," she said, her voice as soft as silk and sharp as a blade, "I’ve heard much about your... unique talent."

He shrugged. "People exaggerate."

"I don’t think so," she said. "You defeated the Shadow Snake of the Southern Wastes. You outdueled the Flame Prince. You even survived three female cultivators with notorious tempers and reputations for homicide."

"Barely."

She leaned forward. "Which is why I’ve come. To extend an imperial invitation. One that cannot be refused."

She raised a hand, and her maidens unrolled a decree.

"In the name of the Eastern Phoenix Empire," the leading maiden announced, "His Majesty the Emperor decrees that Wang Li, rogue cultivator of uncertain origin, is hereby summoned to the Imperial Palace to serve as the Dual Dao Companion of Her Highness, the Crown Princess—"

"Denied."

The courtyard froze.

Everyone looked at Wang Li like he had lost his mind.

Even the heavens seemed to pause.

The Crown Princess blinked. "Excuse me?"

"I said no," Wang Li said, expression calm. "Dual cultivation with a stranger? A political move? Sorry, not interested."

"Are you rejecting an imperial decree?"

"Yup."

The maidens gasped. One of them fainted.

Mu Qingling cackled.

Feng Yuling tilted her head with interest.

Lin Ruoyan clapped slowly, mockingly. "Now I’m really glad I followed you."

Xuan Yuerong studied Wang Li. And for the first time... she smiled.

Not a seductive smile. Not a flirty one.

A dangerous one.

"I was told you were arrogant. But I didn’t realize you were this amusing."

She took a step forward. "What if I told you... I wasn’t here for politics? That I came because of you?"

Wang Li’s eyes narrowed. "Why?"

She raised her hand again, and a wave of spiritual qi flowed outward. The very air trembled as her cultivation base was revealed.

Half-step Divine Core Realm.

An unfathomable gap stood between her and Wang Li.

"I’ve already broken through three bottlenecks in the last year," she said. "But my soul foundation has begun to fracture. My sect’s elders warned me that I need a balance—a Yin to my Yang. My divine flame is too unstable."

"And you think I’m that balance?" he asked.

"I don’t think," she said. "I know."

"You’ve seen me fight once."

"I’ve seen enough," she replied, voice low. "You’ve awakened a bloodline no one understands. You carry the mark of an ancient sovereign. And more importantly..."

She leaned closer, her breath like lotus petals.

"You are surrounded by powerful women... and none of them have killed you yet. That is a miracle."

Wang Li had no response to that.

"Come to the capital," she said. "Train with me. Cultivate beside me. And if you survive... perhaps I’ll even let you see my real face."

The airship roared behind her. The imperial decree hovered in the wind.

Wang Li glanced at the three girls behind him.

Feng Yuling: watching like a silent sword, ready to strike.

Mu Qingling: already gathering phoenix fire in one hand.

Lin Ruoyan: eyes gleaming with amusement and challenge.

He sighed.

"Fine. I’ll come."

"But," he raised a finger, "they come too."

The Crown Princess’s eyes widened slightly. "All of them?"

"All of them."

Xuan Yuerong stared at the trio, then at Wang Li.

Then she laughed.

"Very well," she said. "Let’s see if you can handle four storms at once, Wang Li."

And with that, the wind surged as Wang Li and his very dangerous entourage stepped aboard the imperial ship.

The capital awaited.

So did schemes, seduction, power struggles... and perhaps something far worse than ex-girlfriends.

A new rival.
