Chapter 79: Into the Rift: How to Slay Ancient Beasts and Accidentally Get Engaged Again
The moment Wang Li crossed the threshold into the Nether Rift, it felt like the world had flipped upside down.
There was no sound. No wind. No scent. Just... pressure.
He landed on scorched black earth, his boots hissing as abyssal energy clawed at his body. The sky above wasn’t even a sky—just a swirling chaos of purple lightning, blood-colored clouds, and eyes.
Yes. Eyes. Floating. Watching.
Behind him, over a thousand elite cultivators appeared in waves through spatial portals. Formation teams erected barrier rings, while squad leaders barked orders. Every major sect had sent their finest.
But all of them instinctively kept a five-meter distance from Wang Li.
Because Wang Li stood at the very center of madness. A pillar of crimson-gold qi swirled around him like a dragon, roaring every time a beast approached.
And beside him stood five terrifyingly powerful women, each one capable of wiping out armies on her own.
"Left flank!" Lin Ruoyan shouted, unsheathing her azure saber as a serpentine voidbeast lunged forward. With a single elegant slash, she split it down the middle.
"Thirty meters northwest, underground!" shouted Feng Yuling. She slapped a frost talisman on the earth, freezing the shadows before a pair of claws burst upward.
Bai Xueyao moved like a phantom, leaving afterimages as she danced through three abyssal abominations. Her fists glowed like twin stars.
And then there was Yuechan.
Silent. Serene. Scary.
With each step, the air crystallized. Her moonlight energy purified corrupted beasts just by proximity. Several tried to run from her.
They failed.
"Oh, you poor things," Yuechan said softly. "You chose the wrong fiancé to mess with."
Wang Li sighed. "I’m not sure if I should be flattered or terrified."
"You should be in awe," Mu Qingling said, floating beside him on a sword made of burning stardust. "But mostly terrified. Especially of your luck."
"My luck?"
At that moment, the rift trembled.
A new wave of aura surged through the realm.
From the blackened mist emerged... a woman.
Tall. Exquisite. Dangerous.
Clad in obsidian armor that shimmered with abyssal light, she carried a giant black halberd laced with crimson veins of divine metal. Her long black hair danced as if alive, and her eyes—oh her eyes—were pure gold.
The battlefield fell silent.
Even the beasts stopped moving.
The woman stepped forward and locked eyes with Wang Li.
"There you are," she said in a voice that was both thunder and temptation. "The man destined to become my husband."
Wang Li nearly choked on his spiritual essence.
"I—what?!"
Yuechan blinked. "Wait, what?"
"Impossible," Bai Xueyao growled.
Lin Ruoyan’s eye twitched. "Did she just say—"
Feng Yuling summoned five ice spears without a word.
Mu Qingling pinched the bridge of her nose. "Another one?!"
"I’m sorry," Wang Li said weakly. "But I swear I don’t know her!"
The woman walked closer, unfazed by the killing intent of the other five. In fact, she smiled.
"You don’t remember me," she said. "But I remember you. Seven hundred years ago, in your past life... you swore an oath of eternal unity to me before the Abyssal Flames of Emptiness. You gave me this."
She lifted her hand. A crimson ring with a phoenix sigil pulsed on her finger.
Wang Li’s jaw dropped.
"That... looks exactly like the ring I found buried in my interspatial pouch last month."
"That’s because it’s yours," she said with a radiant, terrifying smile. "My husband."
Silence.
Then—
"WHAT THE ACTUAL HELL, WANG LI?!" shouted Bai Xueyao, pointing a trembling finger.
"Past life vows don’t count, right?!" Wang Li shouted.
Yuechan narrowed her eyes. "Depends. Did you do a blood oath?"
"I—I think so?"
Mu Qingling was now audibly cracking her knuckles.
"Ladies, this is not the time," Lin Ruoyan said, though her voice was tight with... jealousy?
"Introduce yourself," Yuechan said icily to the armored woman.
"I am Ling Xi of the Abyssal Phoenix Domain," she said, placing a hand over her heart. "High Princess of the Abyss, Slayer of Realms, and—apparently—your man’s forgotten fiancée."
Feng Yuling looked ready to start a sect war.
Wang Li threw his hands up. "Okay, okay, can we please focus on the end-of-the-world apocalypse rift thing and not the harem apocalypse I seem to be living in?!"
Ling Xi smiled sweetly.
"Oh, I’m here to help. In fact, I came to save my husband. And slay anything that threatens him."
She pointed her halberd behind Wang Li.
A gargantuan behemoth had emerged from the mist. Its body was a fusion of molten bone, tentacles, and screaming mouths. It let out a roar that shattered two formations and sent dozens flying.
"Demon Sovereign class!" someone shouted.
Without hesitation, Ling Xi charged forward. Her halberd ignited with abyssal fire, and she launched into a high-speed spin, carving a vortex of destruction. The beast howled, but within seconds, its upper torso was incinerated, and its core exposed.
Wang Li blinked.
"...I think I’m in love again."
"DON’T SAY THAT OUT LOUD!" shouted everyone else in unison.
The battle raged on. With Ling Xi’s arrival, the scales tilted. Her abyssal flames were perfectly adapted to counter the corrupted beasts.
But so were Wang Li’s Dragonblood powers.
When the two of them combined their attacks—a spiraling storm of crimson gold and abyssal black—the battlefield trembled.
"You fight well," she said, slicing down a centipede the size of a palace.
"You fight better," he admitted.
"Shall we take a blood vow again?"
"PLEASE NO."
Back at the rear, his five current partners were quietly forming a temporary alliance.
"He needs to be contained," Feng Yuling muttered.
"Agreed," said Mu Qingling. "He’s dangerous to himself and everyone emotionally involved with him."
Lin Ruoyan sighed. "At this rate, we’ll be up to ten fiancées before the month ends."
"I can handle that," Yuechan said serenely. "He’ll just have to sleep in a different palace each night."
"Wait, we have palaces?" Bai Xueyao asked.
"Of course."
"Can I get a lava moat?"
"...We’ll negotiate."
By nightfall, the first breach was sealed. The rift closed behind them as they stood victorious—bloody, battered, and exhausted.
Wang Li leaned against a broken monolith, panting.
"That... was insane."
Ling Xi sat beside him, offering a water gourd. "You still owe me a wedding."
"I really don’t."
"You’ll change your mind."
Just then, Yuechan appeared, flanked by the other four, all radiating ice-cold smiles.
"We need to talk," they said in terrifying harmony.
Wang Li shrank slightly.
"Okay. But first..."
He looked around.
The battlefield. The survivors. The wounded being treated. The sect banners flying together.
And the women around him—angry, loyal, powerful, beautiful.
He grinned.
"Let’s survive the apocalypse first. Then we can deal with the harem situation."
Ling Xi raised her hand. "Can we reverse the order?"
"NO!"
