Chapter 96: Chapter 96 Another Identity??
Kingsley dropped her in front of Nicole’s apartment and parked quietly, his hands still tight around the steering wheel, like he wasn’t ready to let go. Jasmine didn’t say anything, she just opened the door slowly and stepped out, her eyes were tired, her back was stiff, her arms wrapped around herself even though the air was warm.
Nicole came rushing out the moment she saw her, her slippers slapping against the pavement, her arms wide open and her mouth already calling her name like a mother calling a child who’s been lost in a crowd.
"Jasmine! Oh my God, Jasmine, are you okay?"
Jasmine managed a small smile and nodded, but her eyes betrayed her, they were distant, heavy with all the things she couldn’t say, and she let herself sink into Nicole’s arms, her friend’s embrace that was full of that familiar warmth she had been missing.
"I heard," Nicole whispered quickly, still holding her close. "I heard what happened. Lucinda—she came for you?"
Jasmine nodded slowly. "Yeah. It was bad. But I’m fine now."
Nicole pulled back just a little to look her in the eye. "Kingsley’s men got there just in time, yeah?"
Jasmine gave a tiny nod. "They did."
Just then, a small voice screamed her name and Hailey, Nicole’s daughter, came running out, wearing a pink gown with her curly blonde hair, her little feet tapping fast as she launched herself into Jasmine’s arms.
"Aunty Jazzy!"
Jasmine caught her and laughed a little, her voice was softer now, almost breaking at the edges.
"Hey, baby girl."
Hailey held on tight, like she didn’t want to let go, and Jasmine closed her eyes for a second, soaking in the moment.
Meanwhile, Kingsley sat in the car, his hand still on the gear, ready to drive off, but his eyes caught something strange. There was a black car parked across the road, windows were tinted, the engine was still running. He frowned. His gut twisted, something felt off.
Then, the window rolled down.
And Kingsley saw the glint of metal—a gun being drawn slowly, aimed at Jasmine.
His blood turned cold.
"No," he whispered, stepping on the gas hard, the tires screeching as the car’s engine came to live. It was impulsive of him but he couldn’t even think straight.
The man with the gun got distracted by the sudden movement, his hand jerking slightly as Kingsley’s car rushed toward him. Jasmine turned sharply, her eyes catching the chaos across the road just in time. Nicole saw it too.
"Get down!" Nicole shouted, grabbing Jasmine’s arm and pulling her hard.
They hit the ground fast, Nicole shielding Hailey with her body, Jasmine covering her head.
The man with the gun panicked and fired once, the shot cracking through the air like thunder, missing its target as Kingsley’s car rushed forward, nearly hitting the black car before the gunman slammed the door shut and sped off.
Kingsley didn’t stop. He turned hard and chased after them, his face was pale and sharp and filled with rage.
Back at the house, Jasmine was frozen for a second, her chest heaving, her eyes wide and blank like her soul had momentarily left her body. Nicole didn’t give her time to think. She shoved her hard, still holding Hailey, dragging them both toward the door.
"Inside! Now!"
Jasmine stumbled, still dazed, but followed.
They rushed into the house, Nicole slammed the door shut, locking it fast with her trembling fingers, then she dropped all of the curtains.
Jasmine stood in the middle of the living room, her hand pressed to her belly, her lips were slightly parted, trying to breathe, trying to make sense of what just happened.
Nicole leaned against the door, her breath heavy, her voice cracking as she spoke.
"What the hell is going on, Jasmine? Who are these people?"
Jasmine didn’t answer right away. She couldn’t. Her body was shaking.
She looked at Nicole, then at Hailey who was now clinging to her mother, tears welling in her small eyes.
And for the first time in days, Jasmine felt real fear crawl through her bones—not just for herself, but for the people around her.

"These men," Kingsley said, voice low and steady, "the ones who tried to harm Jasmine... they’re not just street rats. They’re not Lucinda’s goons."
Raymond leaned forward slightly, his brows drawn. "Then who are they?"
Kingsley looked at Elliot. "Did you get it?"
Elliot nodded, his face expressionless. He reached into his leather bag and pulled out a small silver disc. "From the camera across the street. Caught everything. Even before the shot."
He slipped the disc into the laptop and tapped a few keys. The screen came to life, a clear video appeared. Everyone leaned in.
The footage began, A black car pulling up slowly near Nicole’s place. A man stepping out. He was wearing black outfit and a baseball cap. He moved with precision, looking professional. He reached into his coat, pulled out a gun.
Raymond frowned. "Pause it."
Elliot tapped the spacebar.
Raymond pointed at the screen. "There. On his wrist."
They all leaned closer. A symbol was on the man’s wrist. It looked like a crest—two wings curled around a dagger with a crown sitting on top.
Kingsley’s heart sank. He knew that mark. So did every man in that room.
"Elite Fraternity," he whispered, barely audible.
Everyone exchanged glances, the air turning colder.
Raymond was the first to speak. "Why would they come for her?"
Kingsley shook his head slowly. "She’s never had any link to them. Never even moved in their circles."
"They don’t take contracts from nobodies," one of the men muttered.
"And they don’t miss targets either," another added. "That wasn’t just a scare tactic. That was a hit."
Elliot narrowed his eyes at the paused screen. "This wasn’t just an attempt. They meant to kill her, fast and clean."
Raymond looked back at Kingsley. "Are you telling us you didn’t order protection from them? You didn’t hire them for anything?"
Kingsley’s voice was sharp now. "No. And neither did Lucinda. I know the kind of muscle she uses. This is different. This is way above her level."
Raymond scratched his jaw. "Then someone else wants Jasmine gone. And they’ve got deep pockets."
Kingsley’s mind raced. He couldn’t understand it. Jasmine was many things—strong, stubborn, secretive—but not dangerous, not connected to that kind of world.
Unless there was something she never told him.
He looked back at the screen, at the man with the mark. "Why her?" he said softly. "What the hell do they want with Jasmine?"
