Chapter 223: 223 Bad Taste (First Update)
Su Guisheng’s words left everyone baffled, was the money robbed, or not?
He just said it was robbed, and now he’s saying it wasn’t? What’s going on, are they playing house?
Captain Hong was also somewhat surprised; denying a robbery in his own home could mean a few things, "According to the suspects’ confession, they indeed robbed money from your home."
Ma Donghua glanced at Su Guisheng, not understanding what kind of game her husband was playing. She tugged at him lightly and whispered, "Guisheng, why are you saying that?"
"What do you know? He’s trying to trick us. The moment we admit our home was robbed, they’ll definitely think I’m in cahoots with those people. Do you want me to end up in jail?"
"But they clearly robbed our money. If we admit it, we might even get the money back." The suspects had actually been caught; if she went to the police, surely they could reclaim the lost assets.
"You think I don’t know that? But they insist we’re their accomplices. Do you think the police would return the money to us?" Su Guisheng obviously understood they could get the money back.
But the current issue wasn’t about whether the money could be reclaimed; it was whether he was part of their gang. As long as the others insisted they were in it together, it was questionable if the money could be reclaimed, and he and Donghua might even end up in jail.
Money lost could be earned back, but once someone goes to prison, it’s not like they can leave whenever they please.
Upon hearing that they might end up in big house, Ma Donghua also panicked.
Captain Hong watched the two whispering and didn’t interrupt them; after they finished talking, he asked another question, "Su Guisheng, they said you invited them over to trick Su Xiaofeng into bringing out the antique she had. Is this true?"
"Captain, it’s a frame-up; they want to use us as scapegoats. They claim I was the one who contacted them—do they have any evidence? Certainly not." That matter was arranged by Liu An—as for how Liu An managed it, he was not sure.
"Yes, Captain, Guisheng and I were indeed tempted when we heard they would pay a high price for antiques, but they were definitely not invited by us." Ma Donghua felt Guisheng was right about one thing: they must not admit to being robbed, for to do so would be the same as admitting they were part of the trio’s gang.
As long as they insisted they had not been robbed, then the others couldn’t falsely accuse them.
"It wasn’t you?"
"Of course not," Su Guisheng chuckled, "We were just curious when we saw people at Big Brother’s house and decided to eavesdrop. Once we heard they were respectable people from the city, we got tempted. Comrade, because Xiaofeng isn’t really one of our Su Family, we had such thoughts, and the idea was to help Xiaofeng get a better deal. And maybe Xiaofeng, appreciating our effort in running around, would share a little with us. Beyond that, we truly had no other intentions."
Listening to Su Guisheng’s almost laughable explanation, everyone really wanted to laugh.
Wow, when did Su Guisheng learn to twist his words like that? He clearly had designs on Xiaofeng’s possessions, and now he’s had a sudden change of heart.
"Right, right," Ma Donghua jumped in, "Who would have thought they’d take Xiaofeng’s things and swap them immediately with a fake? We wanted to confront them, but they denied everything."
"They must be afraid we’ll expose the fact that they switched Xiaofeng’s bracelet, so they’ve slandered us to make it look like we’re in this together. Officer, Donghua and I had no idea they were robbers. Had we known, we would never have brought them to the town to meet Xiaofeng; we would have reported them to the police right away."
"That doesn’t quite add up—some villagers saw that trio’s car enter the village last night, and it stopped at your doorstep for a while before leaving. Then, we heard your cries," the young officer stepped up, "What happened at that time? Were you threatened?"
"Yes, yes," Su Guisheng began, and tears truly came this time, "They threatened us, told me not to speak of their theft of Xiaofeng’s bracelet. If I did, they said they’d make me pay. When I thought about that valuable bracelet being stolen, I just wanted to cry."
"Officer, has the bracelet been recovered? It must still be with them; you really need to look carefully," Ma Donghua was dying of regret inside—her ten thousand yuan.
"Is it this one?" Su Xiaofeng raised her wrist, "Captain Hong returned it to me right away."
Under the sunlight, the bracelet sparkled and shimmered, as translucent as grapes after the rain, delicately and tantalizingly lustrous.
Ma Donghua stared at the bracelet in her hand, dumbfounded.
Was it the real one or a fake?
But she always had the bracelet with her; there was no way for them to switch it.
"So, you’re saying you aren’t part of their group, but upon hearing they would pay well for antiques, you wanted to help Miss Su get a good price, so you took them to the county. But then they got hold of the real thing and switched it with a fake mid-way, which you discovered, and they threatened you out of frustration," Captain Hong summarized at last.
"That’s right, that’s exactly what happened," Su Guisheng nodded repeatedly; that was the truth of the matter.
"Miss Su, can you confirm, is the bracelet you now have the one you owned originally?" Captain Hong turned to look at Su Xiaofeng.
Su Xiaofeng showed off her wrist where the bracelet glittered in the sunlight, "It doesn’t quite resemble the one I had before; it might have been swapped."
Thinking of something, Xiaofeng smirked, "Captain Hong, why don’t you ask them where they switched my real one, how much they planned to sell it for?"
If Su Guisheng refused to admit to the robbery at his home, then the unclaimed money could just go to her.
The funds stolen from Su Guisheng’s home, as if proceeds from a sale, would likely make Su Guisheng and his wife sick to their stomachs. This thought amused Xiaofeng, realizing she had a bit of a wicked sense of humor.
