Chapter 181: 181 Never even touched the steering wheel (second update)
Factory Director Zhou looked around as everyone left, then said to a few workers, "Come back to work this afternoon, we’ll dismiss early for lunch."
After such an incident, he guessed no one was in the mood to work.
"All right, we’ll head back then." The remaining few didn’t think too much of it; if they were told to go back, they would.
Seeing that everyone had left, Director Zhou solemnly faced He Ximei and Liao Xianghe, "Sister He, Xianghe, come to my office."
"Right now, we can’t be sure if the half-bag of raw materials taken away has any issues, but regardless, we need to be prepared. Director Su isn’t at home now, tell me what you think."
He Ximei was momentarily distracted, "Why don’t we try pulling some strings, see if they can let it slide with just a gesture."
She had heard of such things before, but when it came down to herself, she didn’t know if it would work.
"Pulling strings?" Director Zhou hadn’t ruled out the idea, "Then tell me, which connection of Director Su’s could we possibly use? If it’s possible, we could give it a try."
He Ximei thought of the Lin Family, but given Lin Yue’s recent attitude, she didn’t want to approach them, not to mention Xiaofeng, nor herself. Other than the Lin Family, they didn’t know anyone else in the county town.
That’s right, there was also Ershun. As long as Ershun was willing to step in, there may be a turning point.
It was said that the Wu Family had specifically sought trouble with Xiaofeng because Ershun was close to her. Now, with this matter at hand, seeking Ershun’s help seemed somewhat inappropriate.
With an awkward laugh, "We’ve lived in Lihua Village for decades, what connections do we have? I think we can’t be that unlucky."
It’s also possible that there was nothing wrong at all.
"That’s hard to say," Director Zhou mused; how could he be certain: "Moreover, seeing Lin Yue’s attitude, it looks like the Lin Family wants to get involved in this affair. If the Lin Family really gets involved, I’m worried about the future of our factory."
The factory itself was innocent, but if someone deliberately sabotaged them, making up some evidence to do you in wasn’t unusual.
Speaking of this, Liao Xianghe also had his thoughts. He tugged at the corner of his lips, his face showing some impatience, "Don’t you think, the timing of Lin Yue and that kid’s arrival was just too perfect."
Director Zhou’s thick brows furrowed, "Xianghe, what do you mean?"
"Some old tricks, I’ve seen them played many times," Liao Xianghe, who used to be a delinquent himself, was familiar with these games, "Think about it, if someone really wanted the factory to run into trouble, they would fabricate evidence. Among us, who would be the easiest to approach?"
Whether it was Director Zhou or anyone else, they were mostly within the factory; it was not easy for outsiders to make contact - only two people were very easy to reach.
Reminded by Liao Xianghe, He Ximei also realized, "You mean, someone targeted Guaizi and Pengzi to then sell the problematic chili to us?"
Most people just look at whether the chilies are rotten or not without worrying about whether they’ve been sprayed with chemicals.
If someone deliberately sold Guaizi and Pengzi the problematic raw materials, it would be difficult to discover.
"I think this possibility is very high." Director Zhou also believed this was the most likely scenario: "Otherwise, right after the raw materials became an issue, someone came knocking. It couldn’t be such a coincidence."
"I find this man and woman from today extremely suspicious," Liao Xianghe was almost certain.
"What good is suspicion, we have no evidence." Suspicions were useless, they needed evidence, and finding evidence seemed difficult.
"Discussing this now serves no purpose," Director Zhou sighed, "I’m just worried that the raw materials really are problematic, and before she left, Director Su said we could call her in case of an emergency."
"Right, Ye Cheng has a mobile phone, we can call him." He nearly forgot the most important thing, "We should let Xiaofeng know about the situation at home, ask her how we should proceed."
Director Zhou dialed the phone number, and after a few rings, it was picked up. Ye Cheng’s unique deep and raspy voice came through, "Is that Master Ye? I’m Old Zhou. Are you with our Director Su? I have something to discuss with her."
Ye Cheng glanced at Su Xiaofeng and handed over the mobile phone to her.
Xiaofeng gently took it.
The mobile phone was quite loud, and with Ye Cheng sitting right in front of Xiaofeng, it was hard not to hear the conversation.
"There really was a problem," Xiaofeng returned the mobile phone, "But I didn’t expect Lin Yue to be so impatient."
Ye Cheng raised an eyebrow, "You’re not at home, it’s an opportune moment to act; any smart person would do so."
"It sounds like you’re taking pleasure in my misfortune," Xiaofeng poured herself a cup of water from the teapot, "How long till we can get there?"
"At least five hours, I guess." They had just arrived at Tiekou Village, and it was half the journey from Tiekou Village to home.
"Stop the car, stop the car!" As if on cue, Tie Bao spread his arms in front of the vehicle, loudly yelling for the car to stop.
The sudden rush of the shadow caught Ye Cheng off guard and in a panic stop, Xiaofeng’s body leaned toward him.
Seeing the vehicle stop, Tie Bao ran up to the passenger side and fawned over, "Boss, you’re finally back, I’ve been waiting here for you all day."
Every time he heard the word "boss" coming out of Tie Bao’s mouth, Ye Cheng’s teeth ached.
She was obviously a very gentle woman, but the way he called her sounded like she was some kind of gang leader.
"Boss, we’ve really set our minds on not being bandits anymore; you’ve got to help us find a way to get rich," Tie Bao rubbed his hands together, having realized that earning a legitimate income was better than any shady business.
"I do have an idea, it just depends on whether you’re willing," Xiaofeng glanced at him, pondering the possibility of bringing them back to Xijiang County.
"What?" Tie Bao asked, puzzled by the intonation at the end of her sentence.
"I’ve started a chili pepper factory and am thinking of buying a truck to deliver goods everywhere. If you’re willing, you can bring some of your brothers to work with me." The factory needed to grow, and without a truck, it wouldn’t work.
So, getting a vehicle was a necessity.
Tie Bao hesitated upon hearing this, "But it means leaving home."
"Because our current business is within the province, and most of the routes pass by your house, you can come home often."
"Why are you still thinking about it with such a good job offer?" Chunli slapped Tie Bao’s head. "You’re not worried I’ll remarry, are you?"
Tie Bao smiled naively, "I was just concerned you wouldn’t be used to me being away from home."
"You hang around the house all day doing nothing, and it’s us who aren’t used to it," Chunli certainly didn’t want her man to continue being a road thug.
"Brother Baozi, I think we should go for it," Mantou was tempted; he had always wanted to travel but never had the chance.
Encouraged by his wife’s supportive gaze, Tie Bao clenched his teeth, "Alright, I’ll trust you this one time."
Xiaofeng suppressed a laugh watching him make up his mind, "I’ll be upfront, if you work for me, you follow my rules. If anyone can’t do that, they can just head back on their own."
"If I’m going out to work, of course I hope to accomplish something big," Tie Bao said ambitiously, "As long as there’s money to be made, we won’t complain."
It was all for money. Otherwise, why would anyone go to such a far place?
"Xiaofeng." Chunli packed a bag of homegrown sweet potatoes for Xiaofeng, "You’re pregnant now, so don’t be shy about handing off any heavy or tiring work."
"Sister-in-law," Xiaofeng couldn’t help but smile, "Our factory is still short-staffed; if you’re willing, you can come too."
Chunli’s face lit up, excited about the possibility of working in a factory, "Really?"
Thinking of her mother-in-law at home, she shook her head, "Never mind, with Tie Bao earning money outside, I should stay home and take care of mother-in-law."
"What do I need you taking care of at my young age? Besides, didn’t you hear? Baozi will be coming back every so often to see me, so there’s nothing to worry about. You all go, and if things work out, bring this old woman along to live somewhere else."
She was fit and healthy, capable of doing anything; it was ridiculous to have her daughter-in-law take care of her, it would be laughed at.
Chunli remained silent, looking down; it seemed like she wanted to go with Tie Bao.
"Are you really going to bring Tie Bao and his gang into the factory?" Having Liao Xianghe at the factory was one thing, but now adding Tie Bao too.
"Are you afraid that Liao Xianghe and Tie Bao will end up fighting?" Both of them had rough backgrounds, so it was possible they wouldn’t get along.
"It’s not a matter of ’might’ fight, they certainly will," Ye Cheng said with certainty.
"I’ve heard that men settle whether or not they respect each other with a fight," Xiaofeng shrugged, "Both are men carrying burdens, I trust even if they do come to blows, they’ll know their limits."
Ye Cheng’s gaze lingered on her for a moment.
It had to be said, some people are truly sharp when they’re smart, and incredibly dense when they’re not.
In the back of the vehicle, Mantou huddled inside, drinking water with eyes full of excitement, "Baozi, aren’t you worried? We haven’t even touched a steering wheel before."
The thought of learning to drive truly excited him.
With his hands behind his head and eyes gently closed, Baozi replied indifferently, "It’s just learning to drive; don’t be such a baby about it."
