Chapter 66 - 066 Da Feng Village

Chapter 66: Chapter 066 Da Feng Village

Several families were both surprised and anxious upon hearing what the government official said.

Gu Dalin was somewhat impatient and asked the leading government official, "Excuse me, Officer, how far is Tianfu County from the Prefecture? Do you know..."

"Don’t ask too much, you being able to be settled before the New Year’s eve is already good fortune." The leading government official interrupted Gu Dalin harshly: "Remember, do not wander off; wait in the straw hut. If the people from Tianfu County come and can’t find you, and you don’t make it to Tianfu County, you will be driven away."

After saying this, he left with three other government officials to the next hut to notify other disaster victims.

Once the government officials had left, the women from several families gathered around, chattering and asking, "Is it true that we are being resettled? That was quick; Brother Qin just inquired about the news last night, and tonight the government officials are here informing us. We don’t know if Tianfu County is a good place? Which village will we be assigned to?"

Mrs. Chen was the most worried, "Tianfu County isn’t a poverty-stricken area, is it? What will we do if it’s too poor? Will the locals bully us? Who else who fled the disaster has been assigned to Tianfu County? No, I need to go out and ask around, see which family has been assigned to Tianfu County."

Gu Dagui held her back, "Just sit tight a bit, the government officials and soldiers are patrolling nearby. If they see you running about, they might catch you, and I will not be able to save you."

Since the outskirts were filled with disaster victims, the government, fearing problems, had implemented a curfew and sent soldiers to patrol. Disaster victims seen running around at night would be captured and beaten; over the past few days, quite a few had been beaten.

Qin San Lang was not afraid, as he was agile and had previous training as a scout with his family, capable of evading patrolling soldiers. Knowing everyone wanted information about Tianfu County, he said, "Don’t worry, I’ll go find out." No sooner had he spoken than he had left the straw hut.

"Oh, Brother Qin is indeed capable, be careful, go and come back quickly," Mrs. Chen called after him, eager for Qin San Lang to go out and gather information.

The several families were already used to Qin San Lang going out at night to gather news and were not overly worried.

Qin Er Lang disliked Qin San Lang helping others; hearing his words, he snorted coldly and left for the hut where he and his grandfather rested.

Given the crowded conditions among the Qin, Gu, and Luotian families, it was inconvenient for men and women to stay together. These past days, they had each set up small straw huts for resting, coming together in the largest hut for meals.

Qin San Lang returned in under two hours, his worn cotton coat carrying the chill of white frost. Standing in front of the hut, he brushed off the frost and said to the eagerly waiting families, "I’ve found out, Tianfu County is not bad."

The families, hearing this, were very happy and quickly welcomed Qin San Lang in to warm up by the fire.

Gu Jinli poured a bowl of hot water and handed it to Qin San Lang, "Here."

Qin San Lang smiled as he took it and drank a few sips to warm up, then continued, "Tianfu County is a large county under He’an Prefecture, about five days on foot from He’an Prefecture, and it is one of the three counties closest to the Prefecture."

"Then which village or town will we be assigned to?" Mrs. Chen, always anxious, interrupted Qin San Lang before he could finish.

Qin San Lang said, "I didn’t find out the exact name of the village or town, but the western part of Tianfu County is mountainous with sparse population. It’s very likely that we will be placed in a village in the western part of the county."

Tianfu County had been established for a long time, and all the good places were already occupied by residents. These newcomers, being disaster victims, would most likely be assigned to remote villages.

"Oh mother, doesn’t that mean they’d place us deep in the mountains?" Mrs. Chen was very dissatisfied with the potential place of resettlement: "Although we were in the Northwest, Gu Family Village was very close to the county town, just an hour’s walk away. If we end up deep in the mountains of Tianfu County, not to mention going to the county town, it might take half a day just to leave the mountain!"

Mrs. Chen had a relative from her maternal home living in the mountains. That family, whenever they needed to go to market, had to set out a day in advance, walking through the mountains the entire day and night, only reaching the county town market by dawn the next day.

Mrs. Chen was on the verge of going insane; she didn’t want to go to the remote mountains.

Third Grandma replied, "There’s no choice, the government office has already allocated our location. If we don’t go, we’ll be driven away. We can’t withstand any more hardships."

They had fled from Gu Family Village in Gaoshui County of Northwest Long’an Prefecture, having spent nearly six months on the road, exhausted and completely spent. Without settling down soon, they would be worn down to death.

Upon hearing about the situation in Tianfu County, everyone looked worried; Qin San Lang then said, "It might not be necessarily bad, a fellow elder mentioned that we’re among the first batch to move. There’s a good chance we’ll get a decent place. Those who come later might end up further in the mountains."

Hearing this, the families heaved a sigh of relief.

Mrs. Chen was utterly relieved and prayed loudly: "May God bless us to get a good place; we can’t go to the mountains."

Once Qin San Lang finished explaining the situation, the families dispersed.

In the following days, the families waited in their makeshift shelter, even fetching water quickly without delay, fearful of missing the people from Tianfu County coming to fetch them.

During that time, Elder Zhou and Elder Lin visited their shelter to inquire about their relocation details.

Upon learning they too were assigned to Tianfu County, Elder Zhou and Elder Lin were very pleased, although their bamboo card numbers, 612 and 615 respectively, far exceeded those of other families. Elder Qin commented that their locations might be far apart in different villages or towns.

Elder Zhou and Elder Lin had traveled nearly two months with the families from Qin, Gu, and Luo, and had grown dependent on them. Knowing they might not be in the same village or town made them anxious, but there was nothing they could do.

Disheartened, Elder Zhou and Elder Lin left.

The next afternoon, a government official from Tianfu County arrived at the shelter, informing them to gather at the plains outside the city gates by the next two-hour period to start their journey to Tianfu County. Anyone late would be struck off the list.

Those assigned to Tianfu County hurriedly packed, preparing for the departure.

Before dawn the next day, many refugees started moving towards the city gate.

Outside the gate, a multitude of refugees milled about as government officials from eight counties rang copper gongs and shouted the names of their respective counties, instructing the refugees to gather at their designated spots.

"People of Tianfu County, gather here quickly, don’t waste time!" The constable squad leader yelled till he was hoarse, cussing countless times amidst the chaos that lasted half an hour, before finally managing to assemble the refugees. He then begun verifying the numbers on the bamboo cards.

Tianfu County is a nice place, and you are fortunate to be assigned there," the constable began his lecture once the check was complete. "Once you’re there, behave, don’t cause any trouble. Anyone who causes trouble will be dragged to the government office and beheaded!" He warned, his cold gaze sweeping over the thousand-plus refugees, only retracting it when they shivered in agreement.

In a quarter of an hour, the refugees were escorted by a team of government officials and soldiers towards Tianfu County.

The officials, eager to return for the New Year, almost had the refugees running; eventually, they reached the Tianfu County Government on the fourth morning.

In the large courtyard of the county government, village and town chiefs were already waiting. As the refugees arrived, they were led away according to the numbers on their bamboo cards.

Gu Jinli’s families were assigned to Da Feng Village in Qingfu Town.
