Chapter 348: Chapter 344 Mr. Handsome Exposes
The magic show was spectacular, with everything from roses appearing to doves flying out of a hat to a Tibetan Mastiff vanishing, and finally, the host transforming into a Tibetan Mastiff that burst out, all performed seamlessly and effortlessly.
Liu Meiling paid no attention to the wonderful magic; she was solely focused on the close-up shots of the magician’s face on the screen, and it took her several minutes after the video ended to ask in a daze,
"Is that female magician really from S University? Is her name Huo Sining?"
The girl frowned lightly and replied, "I didn’t catch the name, but people online are digging up information on this girl, saying she’s a freshman at S University’s School of Biological Sciences and her last name does seem to be Huo."
That information was enough!
Liu Meiling felt faint; just half an hour ago, her aunt had called her, saying that Huo Sining was going to become famous. She had snidely mocked her aunt for daydreaming about getting rich to the point of madness, but it turned out to be true!
Liu Meiling’s gaze was glued to the screen, and after a moment’s thought, she took out her phone and called Xu Xia.
"Mom, something big has happened! That bitch Huo Sining is going to turn her fortunes around and become wealthy!"
Huo Sining had no idea that because of a video, the Huo family was turned upside down in a frenzy, but she didn’t care about that. For her, the Huo family was in the past, and living in the present was what mattered most.
She didn’t pay much attention to the video, but as it trended on Weibo for several days, someone smelled a business opportunity and got in touch with Huo Sining through the school.
All the offers, whether it was appearing at the S City TV Station’s gala, starting magic classes to teach students, or filming a commercial, were all rejected by Huo Sining.
The hashtag #LetMissMagicPerformOnNewYear’sGala, which everyone rallied to trending, never came to pass. The New Year’s Gala responded, but the tone was dismissive:
-- The production team is already in the final rehearsal phase, and adding a new act at this point would disrupt the sequence of the arranged performances and require shortening the time of other acts. All staging procedures would be thrown into disarray.
-- The New Year’s Gala has stringent selection criteria for its performances, and local acts must be invited by the director and go through preliminary and intermediate rounds. The stage of the Gala is dignified and cannot allow for special treatment due to a single act.
This response led to a cacophony of jeers, with many following up with harsh criticism, saying that the quality of the Gala’s shows was declining and that by refusing to consider the suggestions and tastes of netizens, it was destined to be phased out.
The commotion left the members of the gala’s publicity department somewhat embarrassed, but Chen Yu found it amusing, and often teased his brother-in-law: You’ve got quite a capable wife there, one magic show and she’s got our publicity department folks all red-faced.
Gu Xu, on the other hand, felt nothing inappropriate about it and proudly stated,
"Of course, how else could she be my wife? This magic trick is just a small case; she has many more impressive skills. You’ll know once you meet her."
While everyone was feeling sorry or even indignant that Huo Sining couldn’t perform at the New Year’s Gala, a Weibo account called Mr. Handsome from Media Shang Magazine posted a tweet: Exposing the unknown side of Miss Magic, who recently went viral with her video.
Below was a long Weibo post, and everyone clicked to read it, only to be left dumbfounded.
The post wasn’t about anything else but Huo Sining’s past in Baiyun Village.
However, the past as told was relayed and artistically processed by Wu Jingyi, naturally meaning the story was completely opposite to the facts.
"Miss Magic, named Huo Sining, hails from Baiyun Village in Bashu. She lost both her parents at the age of four."
"Because her uncle’s family pitied her for being an orphan, they brought her into their home and raised her. During that time, her uncle’s family took great care of her, sent her to school, provided for her food and clothing, and treated her as their own daughter."
"Somewhat because her uncle’s family came from a rural background and weren’t economically well-off enough to support her university education, she believed her aunt was mistreating her. Therefore, she ran away from home, vowing to cut ties with her uncle’s family."
"As the saying goes, ’The grace of upbringing is as heavy as a mountain.’ Miss Magic, when you were reaping fame and fortune, did you ever think about your aunt and uncle back in Bashu, still toiling with their faces towards the ground and their backs to the sky?"
The story had taken such a massive turn, nobody saw it coming.
No one knew Miss Magic came from such a background; everyone had thought that someone who could afford to keep a Tibetan Mastiff must be a young lady from a wealthy family. They had never imagined she was an orphan with no parents to call her own.
And the sheer volume of information on the Weibo post could be summarized in one simple sentence: the Huo family had raised an ingrate for over ten years.
Those netizens who had been groveling under her videos, hailing her as a goddess, were dumbfounded after seeing the Weibo post, while those who were originally neutral became as excited as if injected with adrenaline, all of them invigorated.
Many left comments under Mr. Handsome’s Weibo post:
"Is this Weibo post for real? Is Huo Sining truly from Bashu?"
"Are there any other pieces of evidence? If not, wouldn’t this be slander?"
"If it’s true, then this Huo Sining is really shameless."
"That Tibetan Mastiff is worth at least over a hundred thousand. If it’s true what the poster says and she came from an orphan background, arriving in S City on her own, where did she get the money?"
...
Zhang Jun subconsciously reached under his pillow to pull out a cigarette, lit it, and started scrolling through the comments one by one.
"Media Shang Magazine? Isn’t that a gossip magazine? Can such gossip even be trusted? It’s definitely fabricated; the more famous you get, the more drama follows. Miss Magic is hot right now, and this little magazine wants to climb up the ladder by stepping on others, right?!"
"Poster, please dig deeper. I love watching these dramas where a pretentious white lotus sheds its mask and turns into a green tea bitch. I’m bringing a chair and waiting for it."
Zhang Jun, after posting that Weibo, still felt some hesitation and unease. He wondered if exposing Huo Sining’s privacy in such a public manner was going too far.
He hesitated about whether to delete the post, but within the time it took to smoke one cigarette, he refreshed his Weibo page and found the number of shares of his post skyrocketing and the comments had shot up by more than four hundred. His follower count was also surging rapidly.
This was something he had never experienced before with his two-digit Weibo following, giving him a feeling of a minor brush with fame.
Zhang Jun became tremendously excited; any semblance of calm or guilt that initially filled his mind flew away.
In his heart, he kept reassuring and convincing himself that it didn’t matter. He was a journalism student, and as a righteous reporter, his duty was to reveal the truth to the public, to tear off the facade of the deceitful!
Zhang Jun convinced himself he was in the right, yet his hands were shaking so badly that he could hardly hold onto his cigarette. Eventually, he snuffed it out, deciding to focus on browsing Weibo instead.
