Chapter 81: Chapter 81 Appearance

Nanmen Yu felt the breath of death at this moment and could no longer afford to conceal his strength, bursting forth with all his might in a desperate bid to carve out a path to survival.

Yan Cheng’s footsteps paused just for the blink of an eye, before he continued walking forward undeterred, clearly overestimating his own power without any suspense.

"Hiss—" A sound like a distant smile, or perhaps the whistling of an embroidery needle slicing through the air at high speed, reached Yan Cheng’s ears, followed by a Loyal Warrior of Wen Family collapsing to the ground, just to Yan Cheng’s left.

In the instant Yan Cheng exploded into action, dozens of Loyal Warriors of Wen Family had already realized the imminent danger. The whoosh of blades being drawn rang out as they faced the direction from which the hidden weapon had come.

Several Loyal Warriors of Wen Family immediately surrounded Yan Cheng. When he turned his head, he saw that the two who had been about to kill Nanmen Yu were now lying motionless on the ground.

Yan Cheng was startled, realizing that the enemy had taken lives in utter silence and undoubtedly had taken control of the situation. Sensing he faced a formidable opponent, he drew his weapon and let out a cold command.

"Retreat—"

The Loyal Warriors of Wen Family quickly began to retreat, yet more continued to fall. Only when the troops Yan Cheng had brought with him had pulled back several miles did they discover they had lost half their number and had not even managed to discern the whereabouts of their opponents.

Nanmen Yu stood in place, yet to calm down from the brush with death.

Two figures stood still before Nanmen Yu, both clad in full gray, their faces covered with gray masks that only revealed the gap for their eyes, devoid of any identifying marks.

"Subordinate Tan Zong pays respects to the master—"

"Subordinate Wan Ying pays respects to the master—"

Nanmen Yu could hardly believe his ears, staring dumbfounded at the individuals before him.

Death Warriors? Nanmen Death Soldiers? The Nanmen Death Soldiers spoken of by his master?

Nanmen Yu remained still, and the kneeling individuals resembled stone statues. Looking at the two men on the ground who had tried to assassinate him, and having fought them, Nanmen Yu was well aware of their capabilities. Yet these Death Soldiers before him were able to kill with a single strike.

"Are you Nanmen Death Soldiers?" Nanmen Yu suddenly very much wanted to hear a definite answer from them.

"Subordinate is merely a Death Warrior for the master," the individual in grey immediately replied.

"Rise, inspect this, find out who these individuals are, and dispose of the corpses," Nanmen Yu slowly regained his composure, realizing there was much to be done and he could not afford to waste time here.

"Yes—" One of the individuals in grey swiftly got up, took hold of the two corpses, and threw them directly into the pile of the dead.

Nanmen Yu turned to leave.

"Master, please wait." The leading individual in grey spoke, and Nanmen Yu turned to see grey shadows quickly converging from forests and hillsides all around, suddenly standing menacingly before Nanmen Yu.

"You all are?" Nanmen Yu had thought the Nanmen Death Soldiers were just the two individuals from before.

"Master, this is the first batch of Death Warriors to arrive in Nanzheng State, with two more batches due to reach Nanzheng State within days," explained the leading individual in grey.

Nanmen Yu looked at the leading individual in grey.

"Come with me," Nanmen Yu said, since revealing too many people in the Imperial Palace was not an option.

The leader of the people in grey immediately followed behind Nanmen Yu, while the rest quickly vanished in all directions.

...

"Master, the remnants of the Empress’s family’s old faction are hidden in Nanmen State, and gathering these forces will take time..."

"There’s no rush—" Nanmen Yu sat in his own shabby and dilapidated dwelling, slowly coming to terms with the fact that the Nanmen Death Soldiers truly existed.

"Yes, Master’s considerations are comprehensive. The most urgent matter at present is to devise a plan to make the Emperor of Nanzheng State agree to let you return to Nanmen State." The military strength of Nanzheng State was nothing impressive, but at this moment, it was simply not suitable for the Master to make another enemy. Only by returning to Nanmen State in a low-profile manner could success be achieved.

"There’s no rush—" Nanmen Yu shifted focus; the current situation was much better than he had anticipated, allowing for more strategic planning, and the unimaginable now had conditions to continue.

"That’s true." The Death Warrior leader, Tan Zong, was slightly taken aback but after only a moment, he realized the most important issue. Even though it was his first time meeting with the Master, the Death Warrior leader realized that the apparently young Master was wiser than he had imagined. "Master is absolutely right. If we could gain Nanzheng State’s support, seizing back Nanzheng State would have an added layer of security. Master, we have the treasure hid by our predecessors, which, though insufficient to rival a country’s wealth, is enough for you to buy people’s hearts in Nanzheng State and accomplish great things."

"There’s no rush, there are more important matters." Nanmen Yu suddenly stood up and darted towards the direction of the palace walls, an increasingly intense impulse causing the accumulated restlessness and unease to seem to explode out of him, rendering him unable to wait another moment.

"Mas—" Tan Zong had just begun to speak when there was no longer any sign of Nanmen Yu. But should he follow or not? This concerned the Master’s safety, and besides, the Master had not instructed him not to follow. Without a moment’s hesitation, Tan Zong quickly followed.

Tan Zong leaped up and saw Nanmen Yu’s frail figure. He watched as Nanmen Yu skillfully maneuvered through a hole by the palace wall and swiftly entered the palace, passing through a pile of corpses. Tan Zong felt a prick in his nose; they had received the message and rushed over, attaining a preliminary understanding of the Princely Heir’s situation.

Life as a Hostage in a foreign country was imaginable, but the reality was even bleaker than they had anticipated. If they hadn’t arrived in time, the Master’s circumstances...

Tan Zong immediately gave chase. Into the palace? What was the Master doing in the palace at this hour?

Tan Zong didn’t ask more questions, instead focusing on following Nanmen Yu until they stopped at a desolate courtyard, which only puzzled Tan Zong further.

Nanmen Yu entered without hesitation, driven by impetuosity and resolve, while Tan Zong grew even more perplexed. There was someone living in this courtyard. As he moved past the main building, which was even more dilapidated in the darkness, soft light came from the side building. No one was in sight, but a faint fragrance wafted through the air.

Nanmen Yu climbed the steps, where the clear sounds of insects became even more serene. The shadowy figure behind the gauze curtains became visible. There was water under the veranda, and the step-stone by the water front was where Nanny Yun sat, stitching a sachet.

It was silent inside the room. Zheng Nianru, having just bathed, lay on the bed, while Nian Xia, holding a dry handkerchief, was wringing out the droplets from her wet hair. Fu Dong was fanning, for even though summer had not yet arrived, the weather before the rain was unusually stifling.

Nanny Yun looked up and then resumed her work, as if she had seen no one.

Nanmen Yu proceeded further inside, the floor-length curtains fluttering with the night breeze. Tan Zong hesitated briefly but firmly continued to follow. As a Death Warrior, he should always be by the Master’s side.

When Nanmen Yu opened the doors to the inner chamber and caught sight of the figure lying on the couch, he immediately turned to push Tan Zong away.

Tan Zong, greatly surprised yet swiftly turned away, absorbing the scene. Xing Yu, carrying a tray of melons, walked in, glanced at Tan Zong, and calmly entered the room.

Nanmen Yu had already followed Xing Yu’s steps inside, leaving Tan Zong standing outside the door.

What he had just seen...
