Chapter 900: Chapter 900 Mary is the one I’m committed to for life
Mary Scott didn’t expect herself to sleep so deeply – when she woke up, it was already the next morning.
The winter sunlight poured into the hospital room, the greenery by the windowsill looked especially alive. She raised her hand to shield her eyes, feeling momentarily dazed. After a long pause, she glanced at the clock on the wall, then at the back of her hand where the IV needle had long been removed. A small patch of bluish-purple discoloration stood out under the sunlight. She touched it gently, just as the sound of a door opening reached her ears, prompting her to instinctively look up.
A tall man stepped in against the light. He wore a high-quality brown sweater and light gray trousers, looking noticeably gentler than his usual unruly self. Yet the faintly curved corners of his lips betrayed his true nature. Noticing Mary sitting dumbstruck on the hospital bed, he spoke, "If you’re awake, have some food."
Mary didn’t respond, silently observing the man walking toward her. It had been a long time since she felt this rested – from yesterday morning until today, she managed to sleep soundly for hours, clearing away all traces of fatigue. Somehow, David Locke appeared more handsome than usual.
"What’s wrong? Did sleeping make you stupid?" David strode forward and naturally touched Mary’s forehead. It was no longer feverish.
Mary grew uneasy with his familiar attitude and reached out to swat away his hand.
David didn’t mind. He shook the thermos he carried, then adjusted the small bedside table on Mary’s hospital bed. Carefully, he laid out the food he had brought from the thermos, taking out the soup spoon and chopsticks as the final touch. "Eat up."
Mary watched David’s orderly movements in a daze, her mouth slightly open, stunned. Something about him felt off. Since yesterday, when he had taken her to the hospital and picked Alfred up to spend New Year’s at Rose Valley, she noticed something unusual. After pondering for a long time, she couldn’t help but wonder—was David treating her differently because he had slept with her?
"Um... You really don’t have to do all this," Mary said cautiously. If David was indeed being nicer because of what happened between them, she felt it was completely unnecessary. Or perhaps he thought he hadn’t performed well, so he was trying to make up for it in other ways?
David finished setting up the dishes for Mary and, upon hearing her words, glanced down at her on the bed. "Alfred is already at Rose Valley. Someone’s taking care of his meals. If your health checks out this afternoon, you can be discharged."
Mary’s eyes widened cautiously at the mention of her brother. Thoughts of David’s domineering ways swirled through her mind, though she held back her feelings and quietly started eating.
David stood nearby, watching her for a while. Just as Mary thought he would leave, he turned and sat down on the couch in the room.
The VIP suite at the private hospital was unexpectedly luxurious, more like a spacious room in a five-star hotel than a hospital room. Fully equipped with facilities, the environment made it easy to mistake it for anything but a hospital ward. Mary kept her eyes low, pretending to focus on her food while sneakily watching David’s movements. She noticed him not only sitting on the couch but also pulling out a laptop. Testing the waters, she asked hesitantly, "Director Locke, aren’t you busy with work? I see you’re always running around. You should go attend to it; I can handle things myself and leave after talking to the doctor."
"Oh," David replied in an indeterminate tone.
His ambiguous response left Mary baffled; she couldn’t read his mood and dared not press him further. She simply concentrated on her food.
The red date and barley porridge were cooked with a soft texture. The sides were light yet appetizing, and there was a small bowl of chicken soup. After finishing everything, Mary’s stomach felt warm and comfortable. Just then, her phone lit up nearby. She picked it up casually and froze – there were over a dozen missed calls!
Mary stiffened. If there was anything she dreaded most in life, it was a flood of phone calls – they never brought good news.
And this week was the second time it happened. Her mood, momentarily lifted by sleep and a soothed cold, quickly soured. Bitterly, she dialed Mia Anderson’s number. "Mia, what happened?"
"Mary!"
"What’s going on?!" The moment the call connected, Mary barely had time to ask before Mia shouted at the top of her lungs, making Mary’s ears ache. She hastily held the phone away to ask.
"Sis, did you have an abortion? That bastard Director Locke – you even carried his child, and he still wants a divorce. What kind of lousy man is he? He deserves to be sent to the palace and castrated into a little eunuch!"
Mia was in a rage, her usual loud voice now deafening, filling the quiet hospital room even without the speaker turned on.
Mary looked at the man sitting across the room, working, in sheer terror. Sure enough, he looked up toward her.
"Haha, it’s a misunderstanding..." Mary let out an awkward laugh, nervously trying to explain to David.
Only, Mia on the other end thought Mary was talking to her and shouted again, "What misunderstanding? Mary, do you think you can fool me? Reporters even caught photos of you at the OB-GYN department! Director Locke is just a jerk, not a man, and totally unworthy of existence..."
Bang!
Unable to stop Mia, Mary decisively hung up the call and smiled awkwardly at the man, whom Mia suggested should be castrated. "Director Locke, this misunderstanding... Please be the bigger person and don’t hold it against my assistant."
"Haha, a jerk, not a man, unworthy of existence?" David repeated Mia’s words mockingly. With each word, Mary felt her chances in stardom dim a little further.
Mary hadn’t intended to enter showbiz initially, but now she’d grown fond of it. Besides, few other careers could pay as well as the entertainment industry, and she desperately needed money. If Mia’s outburst led to her being blacklisted by David, it would seem too tragic.
So Mary forced another awkward smile, "My assistant was talking about me. She meant me."
David smiled faintly at Mary, sending a shiver down her spine as she struggled to stay composed. Meanwhile, Mia called again – evidently unwilling to let the matter rest.
Though Mary wanted to ignore her, Mia’s persistence prevailed. Left with no choice, Mary answered in an exaggerated tone, "Mia, how could you misunderstand Director Locke? He’s not a jerk – the news out there is totally false. He’s an incredible person, a true man in every sense of the word..."
Upon hearing Mary rattling off praises, Mia immediately grew suspicious. Her voice lowered with concern, "Mary, are you being held hostage?"
Mary, "..." If you suspected that, why would you even say it out loud?
"I’m not. What I just said was the absolute truth," Mary replied insistently, almost swearing by her words.
Mia sensed her worry but suddenly had an epiphany. "Is Director Locke right beside you?"
Mary coughed and admitted, "Yes, he’s been taking care of me since I wasn’t feeling well." For once, her assistant showed some tact.
Mia, who had been gearing up for another rant, abruptly froze. Within moments, she quickly said, "Sis, I just remembered I have work to do. Bye!"
Without waiting for Mary to reply, Mia immediately hung up.
Mary, "..." Listening to the disconnected tone, she struggled to maintain her fake smile as she turned toward David.
David let out a cold snort, stood up, and removed the small table from Mary’s hospital bed. Just when Mary thought he might not be overly petty after all, his icy voice pierced her thoughts, "So this is how you and your assistant talk about me in private?"
"Hah, how could that be? I said it was a misunderstanding," Mary glanced at David’s unpredictable expression, cautiously laughing to appease him.
After all, she had only herself to blame for hiring someone with such a loud voice.
"Heh." Of course, David didn’t believe her, but seeing her plastered-on fake smile, he chose not to pursue the matter. Instead, he reached out and firmly pinched Mary’s cheek. "Come on then, how do you plan to resolve this?"
Mary yelped softly from the pain, leaning back as she touched the spot pinched by David’s long fingers. She silently cursed the strength of his grip.
But now wasn’t the time to argue. When David asked her how this matter would be resolved, it wasn’t clear if he meant their personal situation or the media scandal.
"How did someone so clueless even think of entering showbiz?" David asked, staring with exaggerated seriousness at Mary’s doe-like eyes filled with confusion.
The unmistakable disdain in his gaze made Mary choke up painfully. Thinking back to her reasons for joining the industry, she simply buried herself under the hospital blankets without responding.
Seeing Mary’s reaction, David couldn’t help but chuckle softly. The sound startled Mary; she looked at him in amazement. Since their reunion, she had seen David express countless emotions – frustration, arrogance, sarcasm, and domineering behavior – yet never had she seen him laugh.
At that precise moment, listening to his laughter, Mary felt as if she were transported back to her teenage years, staring at the charming man before her in a daze.
Noticing Mary’s reaction, David grew slightly self-conscious about his laughter. He awkwardly cleared his throat, "I’ll go check with the doctor about your discharge procedures."
"Okay." Mary answered absentmindedly, watching David’s retreating figure. Somehow, she couldn’t help but feel as though he was fleeing the room.
Even after David had left, Mary stayed lost in thought for a while. For just a fleeting moment, it was as if they had turned back time – never separated, never parted.
But reality had other ideas...
Letting out a soft sigh, Mary picked up her phone to check the latest updates online.
The moment she logged onto Twitter, a storm of messages came flooding in – criticism telling her to get out of showbiz, questioning if she and David had really divorced, or outright abusive remarks.
Mary felt increasingly frustrated. He might be a director, not a top-tier celebrity – why would he have so many fans?
Fortunately, she wasn’t new to the industry. Ever since her breakout role in a youth film went viral, various scandals had followed her relentlessly over the years. She had seen all kinds of venomous comments and vicious curses, which had hardened her once-sensitive heart. She glanced through a few insults before switching to the trending search results. Sure enough, the number one topic was the rumored abortion scandal Mia had mentioned earlier.
As for the source of the claims, it all stemmed from a photo snapped by an onlooker who happened to spot her entering the hospital and passing by the OB-GYN department.
This was the classic case of "one photo starts the story, and the content comes entirely from speculation."
After reading the marketing accounts’ dramatic fabrications, Mary nearly doubted herself for a moment – was she truly the one who had the abortion?
Taking a deep breath, Mary decided to drop the bullshit and called Mia to ask her to find a lawyer to handle things. But before her call connected, Agent Spencer’s number appeared on her screen.
Seeing the caller ID, Mary frowned slightly. She hesitated for a second but eventually answered, "Hello, Miss Spencer."
"Did you see the news? What’s going on!" Jocelyn Spencer asked sharply, her tone full of displeasure.
Mary acknowledged with a brief response and was about to explain the misunderstanding when Jocelyn cut her off, already furious: "Do you even realize you currently have multiple endorsements tied to you? Whether it’s divorce or abortion rumors, both severely hurt your image and negatively impact the company. I already received calls from several brands this morning demanding explanations. How do you intend to clean up this mess?"
"I didn’t have an abortion. The news is baseless," Mary frowned and clarified.
"What about the divorce then? Also baseless?" Jocelyn retorted, sensing an opportunity to probe further.
Unlike her firm denial regarding the abortion rumors, Mary hesitated this time. Truth be told, her current relationship with David was a muddled mess even she couldn’t sort out. And divorce? That wasn’t entirely up to her.
But Jocelyn took Mary’s silence as a tacit admission. Smirking coldly, she said, "Regardless, you need to settle these scandals quickly. Otherwise, LG might cut your segments from the commercials. For existing endorsements, you’ll need to cover the penalties for breach of contract, and don’t expect any help from the company."
With that, Jocelyn hung up without giving Mary a chance to respond.
Holding onto her phone, Mary trembled with frustration. Jocelyn’s words were harsh but true. Because of her marriage to David, the company had secured a handful of fast-moving consumer goods endorsements for her – their terms were fixed for one year. Now, scandals involving divorce or abortion would undoubtedly result in penalty clauses being triggered. However, due to her rookie contract with Starlight, her earnings were split 40-60 in favor of the company, with her share further reduced by management fees.
Technically, any mishap should warrant some corporate support to mitigate the damages through public relations. But not only was Starlight refusing to help her, they were choosing to pile on the pressure. Thinking about the wilderness survival show she was booked for next, Mary took a deep breath. She realized Starlight couldn’t be relied upon – she’d need to fix this herself.
Just as Mary prepared to call Mia again, Mia’s number popped up on her screen. No sooner had she picked up the call than Mia enthusiastically shouted, "Mary, Director Locke is so MAN! So masculine! He’s absolutely stunning, practically the benchmark of manhood in the universe!"
Mary, "..."
Clearing her throat awkwardly, Mary glanced at the closed hospital room door. "He’s not here. Please stop exaggerating; you’re making me cringe."
"I’m not exaggerating. I mean it, he’s amazing! Quickly, check the live broadcast on Starry Night TV!" Mia sounded like an overexcited fan promoting her idol.
Facepalming at Mia’s antics, Mary didn’t know what was going on but followed her advice. She tapped into the live broadcast platform and was stunned to realize the man who had just left her was downstairs at the hospital entrance, addressing media interviews.
David’s deep and magnetic voice resounded, "No divorce. No abortion. Mary is the woman I’ve chosen to spend my life with. We won’t divorce. As for her hospitalization, it was due to catching a cold while filming an advertisement yesterday. To those spreading malicious rumors maligning my wife, I’ll pursue legal action to teach them a lesson."
His piercing gaze radiated dominance, an aura of absolute authority. Yet his words—"Mary is the woman I’ve chosen to spend my life with"—sounded utterly tender, heartbreakingly sentimental. Through the screen, Mary’s heartbeat accelerated uncontrollably.
Thud, thud, thud...
