Chapter 697: Chapter 697: Would Rather Not Be Born To You
As soon as Brandon Piers entered the bedroom, he felt the room’s change.
Since returning from Durin, Abigail Green had moved into his room. Before, the room only belonged to him, but now it was filled with traces of Abigail.
Yet at this moment, all of her things were either taken or cleaned up; half of the wardrobe was empty, and the vanity had only his toiletries left.
Previously, when Abigail hadn’t moved in, his room was just like this. After she left, it merely returned to its original state. He should’ve been used to it, but he just wasn’t.
The items that once belonged to the two of them suddenly were solely his. It felt as if a part of his heart had been ruthlessly scraped away. The pain made his already unsteady steps falter even more.
Brandon moved unconsciously around the room for the first time, feeling that this room he’d lived in for years was now too big, too empty. He couldn’t help but wonder if Abigail, who’d been alone in this large room the past few days while he was gone, had felt the same as he did now.
This realization pained Brandon deeply.
He finally reached the bedside. The quilt was neatly folded by Abigail. She knew he had obsessive-compulsive disorder and wasn’t used to having maids tidy up his room, so she learned to fold it military-style. But in the past, to tease him, she would always bunch the duvet into various shapes, triggering his OCD until he pinned her down on the bed.
But now, Brandon looked at the neatly folded quilt and felt no joy. Ultimately, he had hurt her heart.
After a long time, Brandon moved his gaze away from the thin quilt only to spot two stuffed animals at the bedside—a fat, fiery red fox and the little prince he had given her.
She hadn’t taken them.
Whether it was the fox or the little prince, she left them behind. Was it because she didn’t want to remember him again?
Brandon thought of seeing her get into Benjamin Jones’s car in the distance today. For a moment, he impulsively wanted to get out of the car to stop her, to make her stay.
Unfortunately, reason prevailed over impulse.
"Second young master, Secretary Max is here." Just when Brandon’s spirits had hit rock bottom, Pullan cautiously reported from outside.
Brandon collected his brief loss of composure, reached out, grasped the fluffy fox, and gently stroked it with his palm before responding with a faint "okay."
Upon entering the study, Kelvin Max noticed Brandon’s expression. "Second young master, your injury..."
"It’s nothing," Brandon interrupted Kelvin. "Tell me what’s going on."
"Mr. Joshua has been appointed CEO of Evergrowing Pharmaceuticals, and a reception will be held in three days. He sent you an invitation. Originally, this company was just a little-known small company. Last year, it suddenly received an investment of over a billion dollars, then the company owner changed, and its nature shifted. According to our investigation, the foreign enterprise that had previously invested in Evergrowing is part of the Croft Family’s holdings. Do you plan to attend the reception in three days?" Kelvin, seeing that the second young master was uninterested in discussing his injury, quickly reported the work.
"Of course I’ll attend. Joshua has set the stage, how can I not show up?" Brandon was not too surprised by this outcome, knowing Joshua had come prepared this time.
And he knew the reception in three days would be anything but simple.
"Understood. I’ll have it arranged in advance. Additionally, the third branch has become restless again due to Joshua’s involvement these days. How do you want to handle it?" Kelvin was very worried that the third branch would team up with Joshua against their second young master.
"It seems the previous lesson wasn’t enough." Brandon coldly curled his lips. "Send over the stuff from last time."
Kelvin naturally understood what the second young master meant, and was about to carry out the order when Brandon stopped him. Kelvin turned back. "Anything else you need, second young master?"
"Where has she moved to?" Brandon hesitated for a moment before asking.
Kelvin was stunned, then immediately understood that the second young master was asking about the young madam. He quickly checked the message his big brother had sent, "In Rose Valley. Lawyer Jones found her a detached villa, twenty minutes away from Medical University and about an hour from Moon Lake Manor."
"Oh." Brandon uttered a faint "oh" after hearing it, and fell silent again.
For a moment, Kelvin didn’t know whether he should leave or stay, casting a look at Pullan for help.
Pullan shrugged at him. The second young master’s mood had been volatile recently. How was he supposed to know what this meant?
Seeing this, Kelvin dismissed Pullan’s unhelpfulness with a glance, but his phone beeped with a message from Mr. Swift, Bertha Swift’s father.
Kelvin quickly read the message, followed by a stiff turn towards the second young master, "Uh...second young master..."
Brandon was lost in thoughts about Abigail moving and being with Benjamin when he suddenly heard Kelvin hesitantly calling him, instinctively perceiving it to be some bad news related to Abigail. His brows furrowed, "Speak."
"It’s like this... Mr. Swift wants to ask when you will have time to discuss the engagement with Miss Bertha Swift." Kelvin couldn’t help but admire himself for his bravery upon saying this.
Brandon, realizing it wasn’t about Abigail, subconsciously let out a sigh of relief. Then his still-knotted brow furrowed again. Bertha’s father wants to discuss the engagement? "Handle it yourself."
"Me?" Kelvin’s mouth opened slightly. How could he handle such a matter?
Just as Kelvin was about to object, Brandon’s phone rang. He waved Kelvin off, "Go get some rest."
After seeing Kelvin leave with a gloomy face, Brandon answered Sofia Piers’s call, but before he could speak, he first heard Eva Bell’s voice, "Did you know Abigail Green is leaving and taking your son with her?"
Brandon wasn’t too surprised, his voice was indifferent, "I know."
"Know? You know and still let her take him? That’s the Piers family’s eldest grandson!" Eva had changed several numbers to reach Brandon today, only to be blocked each time. Her own number had been blacklisted. Finally reaching him with her daughter’s phone, her tone was urgent.
"So what?" Brandon mocked in response.
"So what? Are you crazy, Brandon? That’s the Piers family’s flesh and blood, the future heir of the Piers. How can you let Abigail take him? What if she uses the child to threaten you in the future?" Eva had suffered a setback with the old master today and only recovered after a long time.
"Do you think everyone is as unfit a mother as you? Abigail isn’t you. She won’t use the child to threaten others, and she definitely won’t use herself to threaten the child in the future. Bear may be the Piers family’s flesh and blood, but he’s also a part of Abigail. More than me or the Piers family, she has every right to take the child." Brandon sneered and was about to hang up.
Eva was agitated by his words, "Brandon Piers, what do you mean? Do you think I’m an unfit mother and that the bastard Bertha Swift bore is better? Don’t forget you’re also a part of me."
"Yes, because of you. If I could choose, I’d rather not have been born." Brandon’s tone was icy.
Then he heard a commotion on the other end before the caller changed, "Brandon, sorry, I did not notice she took my phone."
"When are you leaving?" Brandon didn’t want to hear apologies.
He didn’t expect Sofia to respond with a "sorry" after a brief silence.
