Chapter 693: Don’t Laugh If You Don’t Want To

Chapter 693: Chapter 693: Don’t Laugh If You Don’t Want To

The next day, when Abigail learned that Brandon Piers was discharged from the hospital, her face turned particularly pale.

She already had a vague answer in her heart, but she was truly unwilling to accept it. Lying in bed, she was gloomy and decided to also go through the discharge procedures that evening.

Benjamin Jones still felt uneasy as he drove her to Moon Lake Manor. "Is everything really okay?"

"I’m a doctor myself. I know what to do," Abigail forced a smile.

Benjamin poked her intentionally puffed-up cheek. "If you don’t want to smile, don’t. It looks ugly. I’ve saved my number for you. Call me immediately if anything happens, understand?"

"Mm-hmm," Abigail nodded vigorously. She felt somewhat guilty; Benjamin had been busy taking care of her these past days, but she hadn’t had a proper conversation with him since recognizing him.

"Don’t just nod. Keep it in your heart. Our Abby also has family; not everyone can bully her," Benjamin said seriously.

Abigail felt a bit of moisture in her eyes, but not wanting to lose composure in front of Benjamin, she nodded and urged, "I’ll go inside. You should hurry back."

"Mm," Benjamin responded but didn’t move. He stood there until Abigail entered the black vine-entwined gate, then he left.

As soon as Abigail entered the house, she saw Grandfather Piers, who looked obviously guilty.

"Abigail, you’re back. How’s your health?" Grandfather Piers awkwardly held his cane, an elderly man bowing before his granddaughter-in-law.

Abigail nodded. "I’m fine. Where is Teddy?"

"He just finished dinner and went back to the children’s room. He’s been wanting his mom these past two days," Grandfather Piers replied eagerly.

"Mm, Grandpa, I’ll go check on Teddy." Not seeing her son for two days, Abigail missed him too.

Grandfather Piers quickly asked, "Have you eaten? Have something to eat."

"I’ve eaten," Abigail said as she planned to go upstairs.

Elder Piers, still concerned, said, "Hospital food isn’t good. You’ve lost weight in just two days. Have something before going up. I asked the kitchen to make chicken soup for you."

Abigail then knew that the elderly man was aware of her hospitalization, but he hadn’t visited her in the past two days. She could roughly guess why.

"I’ll check on Teddy and come down for it later." Abigail didn’t directly reject Grandfather Piers.

Upstairs, Abigail first took a shower and changed clothes before heading to the children’s room.

As soon as she entered, Teddy spotted her and wobbled toward her. Abigail was startled, quickly squatting down and opening her arms.

Little Teddy ran straight into Abigail’s arms, lifting his face. "Mommy, Mommy..."

Seeing her son’s innocent face, Abigail thought about the decision she and Brandon Piers faced. Teddy might grow up in a single-parent household, which pained her. She rubbed her cheek against his face and asked quietly, "Did Teddy miss Mommy?"

"Yes," he said in a tender voice.

Abigail smiled. "Mommy missed our Teddy too."

The little one seemed to understand her words and opened his mouth wide with joy.

Abigail was sweetened by his smile, her previously suppressed emotions easing a bit. She gave the little one a hug before looking at Aunt Claudia and Kelly. "Was Teddy good these past two days?"

"Our Teddy has always been good," Aunt Claudia said with a smile, her eyes falling on Abigail’s scarf. "What happened to your neck?"

"Ah? Nothing," Abigail replied perfunctorily, looking at Tate, who had been curiously staring at her since she entered.

Tate, just over two years old, was taller and darker than Teddy. Taught well by Kelly, he was a good playmate.

"Call Auntie," Kelly instructed Tate.

The little one sweetly called out, "Auntie, pretty..."

Abigail was puzzled.

Kelly couldn’t help but laugh, poking Tate’s head. "You little rascal, already knowing what pretty means."

Abigail laughed as well.

Teddy, not knowing why everyone was laughing, looked curiously at Kelly and the others, then at his mother. Finally, he laughed too, making the others laugh even harder.

Not having spent time with Teddy for two days, Abigail played with him in the children’s room for quite a while. Only when he fell asleep did she leave the room.

Unexpectedly, Grandfather Piers was still waiting for her in the dining room.

"Come, let me serve you," he called as she entered. He then instructed the kitchen to bring the chicken soup and some small dishes, serving Abigail personally.

Abigail hesitated and quickly took the bowl. "Grandpa, please don’t do this."

He sighed lightly. "Abigail, this was all Brandon’s fault. It’s also my fault for failing you."

Knowing that Grandfather Piers was aware of her hospitalization but did not visit, Abigail could somewhat guess his intentions. She wasn’t surprised by his words but didn’t know how to respond.

"I don’t agree with Brandon’s actions, but I can’t control him. So all I can do is apologize on his behalf," Grandfather Piers said with pain. He truly couldn’t bear to lose Abigail.

"Grandpa, this isn’t your fault," Abigail said, feeling troubled. Since she had been reborn, Grandfather Piers had shown her much kindness, which was a significant reason she and Brandon had come so far. Now, with issues between them, she couldn’t bear to see him apologize.

"It’s my fault. If I weren’t so incapable, I wouldn’t have left Brandon with such a mess. He wouldn’t be so passive," Grandfather Piers sighed, eyes filled with guilt, knowing Brandon had no choice.

After pausing, he looked at Abigail with remorse. "Abigail, no matter what happens between you and that boy, you must still acknowledge me as your grandfather."

Feeling guilty about his grandson’s actions, Grayson Piers couldn’t let go of Abigail, having come to truly treat her as his own granddaughter.

"Don’t worry, Grandpa, I understand your difficulties," Abigail said, drinking the chicken soup, forcing a smile at him. Though she understood they were all considering her, she couldn’t accept their tacit approval of Brandon’s actions.

Seeing Abigail’s stiff smile, he said painfully, "Abigail, it’s my family’s fault."

"Grandpa, don’t say that," she responded, finishing the last sip of soup. "I need to go upstairs. I’ll discuss this with Brandon. I won’t accept his unilateral decision."

With these words, Abigail left the dining room.

Watching her back, Grayson Piers felt a pang of sorrow, murmuring, "Abigail is a good child. If Brandon loses her, he might never find someone so wonderful again."

"Is there no other solution?" Housekeeper Piers felt pained to see Abigail and Brandon’s growing affection now being forced apart.

Elder Piers didn’t directly answer, sighing, "That family is returning."

Housekeeper Piers, who had been with Grayson for many years, immediately understood who he meant and didn’t persuade further. Brandon’s actions had their reasons.

Upstairs, Abigail entered Brandon Piers’ room, her eyes stinging.

After returning from Durin, she had officially moved in. The previously cold room now had traces of her everywhere. Just days ago, they had snuggled together; now she was alone in this empty room.

She didn’t know where he was, having been injured and not returning to the manor.
