Chapter 689: Chapter 689: The Ruthless Person Who Scolds Himself as a Dog
The vibration ended, but Brandon Piers’ heart did not calm down.
He realized Abigail had woken up. His anxious heart was somewhat relieved, but immediately, he thought about what Abigail had to face next, and he started to feel the pain himself.
"Did Grandpa go to see Abigail?" Brandon’s gaze remained on the quiet phone, hoping it would ring again but also dreading it.
"The old man said he didn’t have the face to go." Pullan stood a meter away from Brandon’s bed, relaying Elder Piers’ words verbatim.
Brandon’s expression froze. He turned to look at Pullan, who kept a safe distance. "What about Aunt Claudia?"
"Aunt Claudia is taking care of Teddy. The old man hasn’t told her about the young lady’s injury yet, fearing she wouldn’t handle it well at her age." After saying this, Pullan secretly glanced at Master Brandon.
Brandon nodded. Since Aunt Claudia fell ill in Europe last time, her health had never been too good, and she couldn’t handle any shock.
"Then... who is taking care of Abigail? What is she eating when she wakes up? What if she’s thirsty?" Brandon muttered, looking at Pullan with increasing pain.
Pullan swallowed, his tongue somewhat tied. "Didn’t you have the kitchen prepare the young lady’s favorite foods? But they were blocked by Lawyer Jones."
After saying this, Pullan took a few steps back, inwardly wailing at how terrifying Master Brandon was without the young lady around. Could he switch posts now?
Brandon was stunned upon hearing this, realizing that Lawyer Jones was by Abigail’s side.
He had long known that man’s ambitions, that he must have always coveted Abigail. As expected, he showed his true colors by blocking the food Brandon had sent!
But after his anger subsided, he realized it was he who had handed Abigail over to Lawyer Jones.
The Jones family had political connections, their influence deeply rooted and complex. And Benjamin Jones himself was the most renowned lawyer in Swallow City, his reputation spread far and wide. With the Piers family in turmoil, handing Abigail over to Benjamin was the most appropriate arrangement for the time being.
Brandon’s rational mind told him this, but his heart ached because he knew that once he let go, he might not be able to get her back.
Especially considering Abigail’s personality, when she loved, she loved purely; when she didn’t, she was decisive, as seen with Jeffrey Foster.
Pullan, seeing the somber face of Brandon on the hospital bed, discreetly backed away again. "Miss Swift is here."
Brandon looked up. Pullan smiled awkwardly. "A lot of media are blocking outside. They insist on seeing you. Secretary Max says it wouldn’t be a good look to turn them away."
"Let her in." Brandon shot a sharp look at Pullan before speaking. Playing the whole act was necessary at this point. Refusing to see Bertha Swift would render all previous efforts pointless.
Pullan, feeling like he had received a great pardon, hurried out of the room to bring Bertha Swift in.
"Master Brandon, hello." Bertha entered and saw a man on the bed whose expression wasn’t good. She was reminded of the scene where he held a piece of shattered glass and looked at her fiercely. The wound on her neck had just scabbed over, hidden under a scarf. Seeing him caused a reflexive pain, making her greeting stiff and devoid of admiration.
Brandon didn’t care about Bertha’s changes, his tone was cool. "Didn’t Kelvin Max offer enough?"
"Yes." Bertha felt an offensive discomfort, but she knew it was she who had placed herself on this chopping block, priced and bargained.
Previously, she had willingly sided with Eva Bell to win Brandon’s heart because she knew being born into the Swift family; she’d eventually have to walk the path of an arranged marriage. Rather than be assigned to some dandy by her father, she preferred to act on her own, and Brandon seemed a good choice.
But after what happened at the hotel last time, Bertha dared not have the slightest romantic thought about Brandon and couldn’t wait to stay far away from him.
Unfortunately, the Swift family, which had been watching the Piers struggle, immediately shifted their full attention once Brandon gained control and announced his plan to get engaged to her. They wanted her to become the mistress of the Piers family.
When Kelvin talked to her father, they were eager to send her to Brandon’s bed, fearing that Master Brandon might change his mind if they delayed.
But the Swift family didn’t know that Master Brandon, even after being drugged, would rather harm himself than touch her.
Bertha, who had always prided herself on her excellence, felt that this was the first time she had been so schemed against and humiliated. She finally ended up losing her virginity to a dandy she hated the most.
What was worse, Adam Piers, that bastard, had even clung to her since then.
Bertha’s firm answer finally made Brandon willing to look at her. "Speak."
"Rest assured, Master Brandon. I gave up any thoughts of you that day. The conditions offered by Secretary Max are satisfactory to the Swift family, but I have a condition. Please ask Master Adam not to bother me anymore." Bertha couldn’t hide the disgust in her eyes when she mentioned Adam.
She couldn’t possibly have affection for a man who nearly killed her, nor could she accept Adam, who took her under those circumstances.
Especially considering that the man frequented nightclubs and was notoriously promiscuous; he was disgusting. She had even gone for a comprehensive gynecological check-up, fearing that the dandy had given her some disease.
After hearing this, Brandon looked at Bertha, thinking about that night when she was with Adam. So, something had actually happened between them. But since Bertha was set to become his nominal wife, he couldn’t let Adam mess around anymore. He nodded. "I will take care of it."
"Thank you, Master Brandon." Bertha secretly breathed a sigh of relief. She couldn’t bring this matter up to Secretary Max in front of her family, nor did she have the face to do so. But Brandon was different. They had witnessed each other’s embarrassing moments, making it a small secret between them.
But just as she finished speaking, the door to Brandon’s hospital room was pushed open. A voice that had made Bertha’s scalp tingle recently sounded. "Brother, are you crazy? Why are you getting engaged to Bertha Swift while our little sister-in-law is perfectly fine? That woman is despicable and doesn’t suit you..."
Adam forced his way in, muttering at Brandon. But halfway through his rant, he saw the woman he was ranting about standing elegantly by Brandon’s bed, wearing an off-shoulder dress with a scarf around her neck. He stopped abruptly, tilting his head slightly back. "What are you doing here?"
Bertha didn’t want to deal with Adam. She had never seen such a vile man. Taking advantage of her was bad enough, but then he kept pestering her. Now, he was even badmouthing her in front of Brandon. She glared at him with eyes resembling Abigail’s and said to Brandon, "I hope Master Brandon keeps his word."
After that, Bertha avoided Adam and hurried away.
Adam was displeased. "What, am I a viper? Why are you avoiding me like this!"
Bertha pretended not to hear. She had later learned that this bastard had been with three women the night before their encounter. Calling himself a viper was an insult to vipers.
Adam was stung by Bertha’s expression. "Damn it. You slept with me that night and don’t want to take responsibility. Why do you always act like you were dog-f*#%ed?"
Bertha turned pale at this obscene remark, trembling with anger. "You... bastard!"
She stormed off without looking at Adam again.
Pullan, who witnessed everything, thought, "I’ve never seen anyone call themselves a dog. Master Adam truly is a ruthless man!"
