Chapter 687: Chapter 687: In the Future, There Will Be No More Young Mistress

Abigail’s hospital room was not on the same floor as Brandon Piers.

Having just gotten his wound stitched up, Brandon walked very slowly. What should have been a ten-minute walk took him over twenty minutes, with a thin layer of sweat covering his forehead.

Pullan, who followed closely behind, felt his heart clench with worry, wishing he could just carry him back to the bed.

When he reached Abigail’s room, Brandon looked inside through the glass on the door. She was still unconscious, and Benjamin Jones was sitting beside her, peeling an apple. The golden light of dusk shone into the room, casting a golden hue over the person in the bed.

The window was half open, and a bunch of white daisies on the windowsill swayed gently in the breeze. From outside, Brandon could almost taste the peaceful passing of time.

Unfortunately, the one sitting at Abigail’s bedside was not him.

"Second Young Master, you should go in and take a look," Pullan gently reminded, seeing that Brandon had walked all this way despite his wound but was still hesitating to enter.

Brandon didn’t move. He just stood there quietly and watched. It was a long time before Pullan thought Brandon would finally open the door. But instead, he turned around and began to walk back slowly.

Pullan followed behind, watching Brandon’s retreating figure. An inexplicable sense of loneliness and sadness washed over him. His face, typically stony and bronzed, now wore a trace of struggle. He glanced back at the hospital room, sighed deeply, and then caught up. He really couldn’t understand why Brandon insisted on getting engaged to Miss Swift.

When Brandon returned to his room, his wound had started bleeding again. Pullan hurriedly called out. In no time, the hospital director arrived and personally treated Brandon’s wound, giving him cautious instructions, "Second Young Master, you should avoid moving around too much for a while."

Brandon lay silently on the hospital bed, not even bothering to respond. Pullan gave an awkward smile to the director, but his forced smile only made the situation worse. Instead of reassuring the director, it made the older man shiver and nervously leave the room.

When Kennan Max returned from the police station, he saw the expressionless Second Young Master lying in bed. Kneeling on one knee, he said, "Second Young Master, it was my failure to protect the Second Young Madam. Please punish me."

The man half-lying on the bed lifted his eyelids slightly and glanced at Kennan before turning to Kelvin Max, "What’s the situation?"

"Johnson and Ruby Green have already been handed over to the police. Before they were taken away, they confessed that someone promised them that after kidnapping Abigail, you would come to rescue the Second Young Madam. Then Ruby would handle the rest and dispose of the Second Young Madam, and they would be sent abroad. These are the documents we found on them." Kelvin stepped forward and handed the documents to Brandon.

Brandon glanced at them and sneered, "Those idiots. They thought they could escape after kidnapping Abigail? Have they found the one who knocked Abigail out?"

"Yes, it was one of our own. His sister was taken two days ago, and he was threatened into doing it." Kelvin explained, glancing at his older brother.

Kennan lowered his head, "It’s my negligence that I didn’t detect anything unusual in advance. Please punish me."

Brandon ignored Kennan. The personnel for the security team at the school had been decided three days ago. The other party chose that time to act precisely to prevent Kennan from having any chance to detect a problem in advance. Strictly speaking, it wasn’t Kennan’s fault. But Brandon was in a bad mood and didn’t want to deal with him at all. He looked at Kelvin, "Betrayers, no matter the reason, hand them over to the police and blacklist them in the industry."

"Yes," Kelvin acknowledged, knowing that this effectively cut off their livelihood.

"How is the investigation into the ambushers?" Brandon’s eyes darkened when he mentioned the people who intercepted and attacked him today.

"Hughes has already traced it. One group belongs to the third branch; the remaining two groups—one is hired thugs from Swallow City’s black market, and the other is mercenaries. But the employers of both groups should be the same person. Their purpose was to cover the mercenaries’ attempt to kill you. As for the employer, we have no leads yet." Kelvin’s voice carried a hint of frustration. The other party was extremely cautious, and the leads broke off halfway through the investigation.

Brandon shook his head, "No need to look further. Joshua Piers is back. This is his greeting gift."

Kelvin was stunned, "Mr. Joshua?"

"If I’m not mistaken, he should arrive today." Brandon sneered, glancing at his wound. His dear cousin had managed to almost take his life with his first strike.

Kelvin twitched nervously, "I’ll arrange for someone to keep an eye on him immediately."

Brandon didn’t seem to care. Joshua hadn’t even reached Swallow City yet and had already caused such a commotion. It was likely an attempt to take revenge.

Which was fine. New scores and old grudges could be settled together.

Kelvin reported some other situations, but hesitated when it came to announcing the engagement with the Swift family.

Brandon noticed this and gave him a cold, sweeping glance.

Kelvin had no choice but to step forward and say, "Second Young Master, about the official announcement of your engagement..." Others had to be investigated and dealt with, but this matter was a conundrum for Kelvin.

The Second Young Master had suddenly announced his engagement to Miss Swift of the Swift family. This caused a stir online. Previously, the Second Young Master had denied such rumors. Now suddenly announcing it was equivalent to slapping himself in the face. So, there were many opinions out there.

The only fortunate thing was that when the Second Young Madam had her accident, many people were aware of it. Few, however, knew that she had returned. So, despite numerous accusations of Brandon being heartless and hypocritical, more people felt that the Second Young Madam and Brandon were not a good match. There were equal amounts of support and criticism.

But once the truth came out, it was easy to imagine how public opinion would sway.

Kelvin needed to know exactly what the Second Young Master intended.

After all, the Second Young Madam now was not the same as before.

Up to now, Kelvin still found it hard to believe that the thinner Second Young Madam could be so dazzling and extraordinary.

She was, in no way, inferior to Miss Swift. In fact, her aura was even more distinguished.

"You contact the Swift family and negotiate the engagement terms." Brandon clearly didn’t want to discuss it further. As for public opinion, he couldn’t care less and simply tossed it to Kelvin.

"What about the Second Young Madam..." Kelvin roughly understood what had happened. Dealing with others was easy. The Second Young Madam was the crux of the problem.

Brandon clearly fell silent for a long while, "From now on, there will be no Second Young Madam."

Kelvin thought he had misheard, "Second Young Master..."

"Get out." Brandon cut him off before he could say more, angrily ejecting him from the room.

Kelvin was at a loss. Then he heard Brandon pointing at Kennan, "You get out too. Don’t let me see you for a while."

"Yes," Kennan replied in a hoarse voice.

Kelvin still wanted to ask about the Second Young Madam, but Pullan stepped forward and shook his head, "Let me escort you two out."

Kelvin sighed and had no choice but to comply.

Bang!

As soon as the three of them stepped out, Kennan punched the wall, causing a crack to appear in the tile.

Kelvin quickly grabbed his brother, "What are you doing?"

"It’s all my fault for not noticing sooner, giving others the chance to hurt the Second Young Madam and the Second Young Master." Kennan spoke painfully. Even though he hadn’t been punished explicitly, the lack of it made him feel even worse.

"The other party was clearly prepared. If it hadn’t been this time, it would have happened next time. Otherwise, the Second Young Master wouldn’t have made that decision." Kelvin had already seen through the situation and tried to comfort his brother.

But Kennan understood and felt even more miserable. It ultimately came down to his own lack of capability.

"Instead of blaming yourself, you should work to redeem yourself." Pullan said seriously from the side.

Kelvin and Kennan fell silent. They knew that a tough battle was ahead.
