Chapter 683: Chapter 683: What was given is not money, but life
Brandon said "Alright," which made Eva suddenly look up.
Sofia then instinctively grabbed Brandon’s arm, shook her head at him, and then looked at her mother. "Mom, I’ve listened to you about everything since I was little: what school to attend, what major to study, what kind of boyfriend to find. Why can’t you just leave Brandon alone? Do you know you’ll lose him if you keep acting like this?"
"I can let him do anything he wants, except for this!" Eva persisted stubbornly.
Brandon didn’t want to waste any words with her. "I agreed to your conditions. Now, tell me where Abigail is, immediately."
"Announce it publicly right now," Eva distrusted Brandon.
Brandon gritted his teeth, glanced at his so-called mother, and then called to notify the Piers’ Public Relations Department.
After giving instructions, his amber eyes stared intensely at Eva.
Only then did Eva pick up her phone to inquire, "The money will be given to you the old way. Where did you hide her?"
Brandon’s eyelids twitched at Eva’s tone. It seemed this wasn’t the first time.
However, whatever was said on the other end made Eva’s face turn sour. "You’re asking for a lion’s share!"
"Give it to him," Brandon lightly tapped his finger on the table, speaking to Eva.
Eva looked at her son. "He wants you to deliver the money yourself."
"Fine." Brandon did not hesitate in the slightest.
But after hanging up, Eva looked at Brandon. "The third branch is also involved in this. Have you thought that delivering the money might mean delivering your life?"
"Isn’t that the result you hope for?" Brandon coldly glanced at Eva and turned to leave.
Sofia hurried to catch up. "I’ll go with you."
"No need, stay here with her. Inform me of any new information." With that, Brandon quickly left the Waldorf with Pullan and then instructed Kelvin to prepare the money.
Johnson was very cunning; instead of directly telling Eva the location, he made Brandon prepare the cash first and then follow his instructions.
But naturally, Brandon wouldn’t just wait around. Kennan and Hughes continued their efforts, searching tirelessly.
Time ticked by, and Brandon’s nerves grew tighter.
...
At an abandoned chemical plant on the outskirts.
Abigail woke to see a dark, thin man half-squatting on the ground, eating instant noodles. When he saw her move, he glanced up, slurped the broth, stood up, and tossed the noodle cup aside without paying her any further attention.
"Are you in it for the money, or are you avenging Rose and Ruby?" She hadn’t seen Johnson for half a year. He was now darker and thinner than when he worked as a gardener at the Green family, and more taciturn. But Abigail knew his actions were ruthless and cold-blooded. Since he had kidnapped her, he wouldn’t let her go easily.
But she needed to know if he was after money or her life to understand what she would face next.
Unfortunately, after she asked, Johnson merely glanced at her with his murky eyes and continued pressing keys on his old phone in silence.
This made Abigail’s heart pound, but the pain in the back of her neck made it hard even to lift her head. Helpless, she curled up on the tied chair, glancing around only to see no one else. Yet, she distinctly remembered that the person who knocked her out wasn’t Johnson.
Where was his accomplice?
With her hands tied behind her, Abigail’s wrists moved slightly, causing the rough rope to cut into her skin, providing no hope of loosening and causing her to inhale sharply from the pain.
Finally, Johnson reacted, turning his head to her. "Stay quiet."
The brutality in his eyes made Abigail shiver. She had always known Johnson to be cruel, and from his gaze, she realized that if she showed any sign of disobedience, this seemingly honest yet sinister man could send her to Heaven.
Abigail instinctively clenched her fist, making the rough rope dig into her skin more painfully. She gritted her teeth. "Let me guess, you’re in it for the money."
She figured Johnson was probably hired by Eva.
Thinking of this, Abigail wished she could send Brandon’s mother back to F Nation, never to see her again.
But now, she couldn’t do anything but endure. Because of her words, Johnson finally looked at her.
Seeing a glimmer of hope, Abigail’s gaze fell on Johnson. "I know you love Ruby a lot. Otherwise, you wouldn’t have guarded her silently for so many years. But if you kill me today, it’s like choosing the death penalty for yourself. Once you’re dead, who will take care of Ruby? So I bet you’re just in it for the money."
If it was just for money, she had a chance of surviving.
"Then?" Johnson’s dark and thin face showed little emotion, yet his stare signaled Abigail to continue.
"You should have already received half the deposit. I can offer you double the amount and promise not to pursue you or Ruby. How about that?" This offer was highly tempting because it meant not being pursued.
Johnson scrutinized her. He remembered when she was 200 pounds, as fat as a pig. After failing his first attempt to harm her but instead injuring Rose and Ruby, he thought this Green family’s Miss had changed.
The subsequent series of events had caught Johnson off guard. But he always believed that the ability to retaliate against Rose and Ruby wasn’t Abigail’s but the power of the second young master behind her.
Looking at the transformed girl before him, if not for the photos, Johnson wouldn’t have recognized her as Abigail Green; the girl had become someone entirely different from the Miss Green he remembered.
Compared to him, this Abigail had grown incredibly fast. She knew exactly where to strike. If he had no alternative, he might indeed be moved by her.
But it was a pity. Someone already made him a better and safer promise.
Johnson flashed Abigail a strange smile. "You guessed wrong."
These four words sent chill down Abigail’s spine.
Her lips trembled slightly as she forced out a smile. "You’re lying to me. If you were really out for revenge, you wouldn’t have taken me here, right?"
"That’s because my employer wants both your life and Master Brandon’s," Johnson said, feeling a bit sympathetic for this young lady, so he decided to let her die knowing the truth.
Abigail shook her head. "You won’t do this. Even if you don’t die, you won’t be able to take care of Ruby."
"Do I need your concern about whether I take care of her or not?" Just as Abigail finished, a female voice echoed in the dilapidated factory.
It was a voice Abigail was very familiar with, a voice that made her turn her head hastily, only to see Ruby limping in with a crutch.
Half a year had passed, and the once-beautiful Ruby was now scrawny, with long, deep lines at the corners of her mouth, making her look ten years older. Abigail couldn’t help but frown. "What happened to you?"
Ruby, leaning on her crutch, laughed maniacally. "What happened to me? How dare you ask what happened to me?"
Abigail’s brows furrowed, worry gnawing at her heart.
