Chapter 649: Chapter 649: Before One Wave Subsides, Another Rises

Mary Scott faced David Locke’s disdainful tone, her whole body trembling with anger. "Stop dreaming. I won’t sign."

"Oh, selling to others or selling to me, it’s all the same. I advise you to think it over." David Locke looked at Moll Scott, or rather, Mary Scott now, his eyes hiding tumultuous emotions, his face cold and ruthless.

The former betrayal felt like a thorn lodged in his heart, impossible to remove. He thought the wound had healed long ago, but upon seeing this woman again after so many years, he discovered the wounds hadn’t healed at all. They had festered under the skin, ready to burst at a touch.

Over the years, he drifted among flowers, but only in body, never in heart. That was because he had no heart.

He had once offered a whole heart devoutly to this woman, only for it to be trampled to pieces.

Therefore, he had no heart anymore.

"Dobbin Locke, are you taking revenge on me?" Mary Scott restrained her trembling body and asked word by word.

David Locke did not directly answer her question but instead scanned her embarrassed state. "Are you even qualified to call me Dobbin?"

A single sentence made Mary Scott’s fingertips quiver, and the previously punctured hole in her heart grew larger and more painful.

Dobbin was his given name, once only called by his parents and close friends, and then only she used to call him that.

In the past years, when she woke up crying from dreams, she would call out for Dobbin repeatedly. Dobbin, I’m sorry, but now he wanted to take back this cherished name.

"Sorry, Director Locke, my mistake." Holding back the immense pain in her heart, she said, almost obediently changing "Dobbin" to "Director Locke," the respectful title everyone could use.

Six years ago, she had already exited Dobbin Locke’s life. Now, the person in front of her was David Locke, the most talented director everyone in the entertainment circle wanted to latch onto.

David Locke stared unblinkingly at Mary Scott and then effortlessly heard her change in address to Director Locke. The suppressed violent aura within him drowned him in an instant. At one moment, he even wanted to rush up and strangle this woman. She had no principles.

Where was the once proud, willful, domineering rich lady?

Without him, he thought she would have lived a better life.

"I’ll give you one night to consider. If you still don’t want to sign, don’t blame me for being ruthless." Rationality triumphed over impulse. David Locke uttered this line, then turned and left Mary Scott’s narrow, shabby apartment.

"You..." Mary Scott wanted to say something, but her phone suddenly rang. Distracted, she heard the apartment door slam shut. Glaring angrily at the closed door, she grabbed her phone, only to find it was a call from the hospital. Her mind in chaos, she answered, "Is something wrong with my brother?"

"Please come to the hospital first." On the other side, Alfred Scott’s primary doctor said softly.

Mary’s heart panicked. She hastily agreed, gathered her things in a hurry, and ran out.

Upon reaching the hospital, she grabbed the primary doctor. "How is my brother?"

"We just finished the examination. The situation is complicated. For now, he must undergo immediate craniotomy." Harriet Marjory said seriously to Mary Scott.

Mary’s hands trembled. "Does he have to undergo a craniotomy? My brother is still so young..."

"Miss Scott, a craniotomy isn’t as frightening as you think. Letting the brain tumor grow unchecked inside is much more dangerous. Besides, only after the craniotomy can we biopsies and understand the tumor’s nature." Harriet Marjory explained gently.

"Thank you, Dr. Marjory. I understand." Mary Scott nodded weakly, walking heavily into her brother’s ward but immediately putting on a lighthearted expression.

Since their parents’ accident, they had depended on each other. She didn’t expect that as soon as she went abroad, her brother fell ill.

After staying with her brother for only a while, a nurse called her out.

"Miss Scott, this is Alfred Scott’s overdue payment bill. Could you please settle it? Otherwise, we can only process his discharge." The nurse responsible for billing said apologetically.

"Didn’t I pay fifty thousand when I admitted him? How could it run out so quickly?" Mary Scott felt her scalp numb upon hearing about the overdue payment. The hospital was her most feared place, a money-burning machine.

"The patient doesn’t have insurance. If the surgery proceeds, the full amount must be paid. If you have any doubts about the hospital charges, you can check the daily expenses details." The nurse’s tone grew slightly displeased.

"Oh, I understand." Mary Scott answered softly, hearing the nurse’s colder tone.

Once the nurse left, Mary Scott clutched the overdue bill, leaning against the cold wall. Her body uncontrollably slid down. The amount due wasn’t much, just one hundred fifty thousand.

It was the money she used to spend casually on a few bags, but now she couldn’t produce it.

She had been through so much in the past few years, thinking she’d become strong enough, yet she found herself still the same useless young lady, failing at everything.

The overdue bill was like the last straw on the camel’s back, suffocating her. In her mind flashed David Locke’s cold face.

She wanted to cry but dared not, for behind the wall lay her seventeen-year-old brother.

Rubbing her face hard, Mary Scott pulled herself out of her horrible emotions. She returned to the ward, her expression lightening at the sight of her handsome but pale-faced brother. His vision impaired by the brain tumor, Alfred Scott could no longer see his sister’s face clearly but still reached out. "Sis, is it time to pay? Maybe I shouldn’t undergo surgery..."

"Are you doubting your sister’s ability? Don’t forget I’m a superstar. Though suppressed by the company, casual endorsement deals still bring in several thousand. Your surgery sounds scary, but it’s not major surgery, only costing around two hundred thousand. As if I couldn’t cover that! What a joke." Mary Scott said, hands on hips, boastfully.

Alfred Scott smiled, the typical expression of a young boy. "I knew sis was the best."

"Then behave and stay here. I’ll go earn money for you. If you need anything, tell the nurse assigned to you, got it?"

"Got it."

"Good boy!" Mary Scott patted her brother’s head, sneaking away before he could get upset.

As soon as she stepped out of the ward, her pretty, delicate face fell. She put on her mask and hat, dazedly leaving the hospital.

Ever since the company suppressed her, she hadn’t gotten any gigs for nearly a year. Her last entry into Best Actor’s crew was thanks to a former male actor’s help. She had thought the agent’s recommendation would turn her luck around, only to find it was David Locke’s film, leading to her current predicament.

The contract filled with humiliation came to mind, and she shook her head fiercely.

That man hated her so much. How could he let her off easily?

But where would the money come from...

Lost in thoughts, she returned to her apartment, only to find her belongings thrown into a mess outside, the door wide open. Someone was still tossing her things out. Mary Scott exploded on the spot. "Who are you? What are you doing!"

"Oh, you came just in time. Pay the remaining rent and then get out. You look glamorous, but who knew you were a pauper." As Mary Scott finished, the landlord, a woman in her forties with her nose in the air, emerged triumphantly cursing.

Mary’s tone softened instantly. "Aunt Scarlet, didn’t we agree on extending another half month?"

"Half a month? Do you think this is a charity? Get out, get out!" The woman cursed fiercely, kicking Mary’s belongings away.

Trembling with anger, Mary Scott was powerless, gritting her teeth. "How could you..."

"Get out!"
