Chapter 629: Do You Want to Live?
Chapter 629: Chapter 629: Do You Want to Live?
"I heard you checked on me after I died!"
Abigail’s words were nothing short of cruel.
Clara Smith’s chest heaved on the recliner, her pale, frail body beginning to tremble from Abigail’s words.
She never thought that one day a girl claiming to be her daughter would say such words to her.
All these years, the death of her lover and abandoning her infant had been irreparable wounds for Clara. Even though she later married Gary Richardson out of gratitude and raised Gavin Richardson, Abigail was always a forbidden touch for her.
It wasn’t that she didn’t want to go back or didn’t want to acknowledge Abigail; she just couldn’t do it.
Just seeing her daughter’s face would remind her of that blood-soaked night, her vision filled with red blood, and Hayden Bell’s lifeless body beside her.
These years felt like an unending nightmare, tormenting her night after night.
Sometimes, Clara felt like the desperate Twelfth Young Master from "Rouge Button," not knowing if Hayden was waiting for her too.
In this life, apart from Hayden, what she couldn’t let go of most was her daughter.
Now, hearing this girl claiming to be her daughter say to her, "I heard you checked on me after I died," the repressed pain flowed out like seawater. Was she blaming her?
Yes, she was blaming her.
Clara thought painfully, then heard the girl’s voice continue, "Are you in pain? Because of what I just said, or because of your guilt toward me?"
"What do you want?" Clara asked after a long while, trembling.
"Before meeting you, I imagined many scenarios of our reunion. I thought I might resent you, hate you, or understand you. But I never imagined we would meet like this, fulfilling a friend’s request." Abigail said slowly. When entering the hospital room, she couldn’t believe how absurd life was.
"Are you Daniel’s friend?" Clara asked slowly.
"Sort of. I agreed to pretend to be your daughter to rekindle your hope in life. I just didn’t expect you to be the mother I’ve been searching for." Abigail’s voice was too calm, adding a reassuring strength to her young face.
It made it impossible to doubt her words.
Clara knew what she said was absurd, but she couldn’t help believing it, watching the girl with pain, guilt, and bewilderment in her eyes.
"You just asked what I wanted? Actually, I should ask you. What do you want? I’ve seen your medical records. Besides a chest-opening surgery, there’s no other way. But with your current condition, chest surgery is highly risky. Without the will to live, you may not survive the operation. Do you want to live?" Abigail finally responded to Clara but threw another question at her.
Do you want to live?
"Do you want to live?" Clara echoed to herself. She had never thought about this question, but it had always troubled her.
"If you can’t figure out the answer, then I’ll tell you." Abigail interrupted Clara’s murmuring, her tone unprecedentedly forceful.
Clara was stunned, quietly watching Abigail.
"Live to make it up to me. Let me forgive you." Abigail said word by word.
"Forgive me?" Clara murmured.
"Yes, either earn my forgiveness and die, or die carrying my resentment toward you. You choose." As she spoke, Abigail glanced at Clara’s chest. "If you decide to live, let Daniel find me. I’ll perform the surgery for you."
"You’ll perform the surgery for me?" Clara looked at Abigail, seemingly wanting to understand the meaning behind her words.
Abigail smiled, "You won’t be unaware of my achievements in surgery, right?"
"I know, I know..." Clara hurriedly replied. She just hadn’t expected that one day her biological daughter would be willing to operate on her.
"Good, then see you." Abigail paused, intending to leave. Her feelings toward Clara were complex. She had hoped, resented, and now felt touched by Clara’s story, making it even harder to know what attitude to take toward her.
Just as she turned around, a cold hand grabbed her fingertip. Without looking, Abigail sensed the overly thin, skin-and-bones hand.
Her heart was lightly pricked.
"Are you... really Abigail? That year you went on a graduation trip to Y Nation, from London to Edinburgh. Why did you suddenly come back?" Clara’s voice quivered slightly. She knew it sounded absurd, but she believed it and tried to confirm it.
"When I reached Edinburgh, I got caught in a heavy rain. I suddenly felt very down and wondered why I should continue searching for you when you had abandoned me." Abigail didn’t turn back, her voice with a slight nasal tone.
Clara’s eyes turned red instantly, "Abigail..."
But Abigail removed her hand and walked out of the hospital room.
"Abigail, Abigail, I am... your mother!"
Clara was certain it was Abigail, her daughter. She desperately reached out, wanting to grasp her, to say she was her mother. But in the end, the words wouldn’t come out. It wasn’t because she didn’t want to; she wasn’t worthy.
For so many years, because of her own inner pain and guilt, she left her less than three-month-old daughter with her elderly father. She never looked back. How could such a person be worthy of being her mother?
She wasn’t worthy!
Watching Abigail’s back, Clara’s uncontrollable tears fell. How many years had it been since she last shed tears? She thought her tear ducts had dried up. But at this moment, she couldn’t help but cry...
"Abigail, Abigail, Mama is sorry. Mama is sorry." Clara murmured repeatedly, but the response she got was the closing hospital room door.
The person on the recliner wanted to rush out urgently but fell to the floor.
Daniel rushed out, "Mama, are you okay?"
"I’m fine. Go after your sister. Don’t let her leave. Don’t let her leave, please!" Clara ignored her pain, shaking Daniel’s shoulders frantically.
Daniel didn’t expect Abigail could affect his mother so deeply. His heart was filled with questions, but there was no time to delve into them. "Don’t worry. Didn’t sister say she would wait for your decision? As long as you stay healthy, you’ll see her. She will operate on you. Once you’re healthy, you can see her every day."
"Is that true?" Clara asked Daniel uncertainly.
"Of course. As long as you live, there’s always a chance. Do you know? Sister is now the fiancée of the second young master of the Piers Group in Swallow City. She even has a beautiful baby boy. He’s adorable. Once you’re healthy, you can see them."
Daniel didn’t know where Abigail got these ideas, but he chose to go along with them for now.
Clara’s eyes widened slightly, "Fiancée? Baby boy?"
"Yes, you’re a grandmother now." Even Daniel thought it was ridiculous, but it was the only feasible option.
"Really?" Clara murmured, her vision darkening as she fainted.
Daniel hurriedly supported her and glanced at Doctor Curme, who had approached at some point. "How is my mother?"
