Chapter 621: Chapter 621: Do You Have A Masochistic Tendency?
Abigail looked at the man’s shining eyes and that face no one could resist. She didn’t understand, weren’t they supposed to be looking for her mother? Why had the topic shifted in this direction?
"Hmm?" Seeing that Abigail didn’t respond, Brandon Piers reminded her with a hum, his eyes full of expectation.
Abigail looked up at him. "Do you have a masochistic tendency?"
Otherwise, why was he so excited?
"No, I don’t." Brandon noticed the look in Abigail’s eyes and realized he might have been too agitated, quickly denying it.
"If you don’t have a masochistic tendency, then there’s no need for you to be so excited." Abigail finished speaking and wanted to get off Brandon, as she had already felt the most primal threat from the man and decided it was better to retreat.
But before she could get up, Brandon’s long arm pulled her back, resulting in her half-lying in his arms, feeling both awkward and embarrassed. "Um... what are you doing?"
"You still haven’t answered my question." Brandon’s eyes, comparable to the stars, shone brightly as he looked seriously at Abigail.
"Um... go ahead, you can look for her." Abigail deliberately misunderstood Brandon’s meaning, trying to bring the topic back to the initial matter of finding her mother.
When it came to her mother, Abigail still carried a complex emotion.
She wanted to see her yet didn’t want to.
Unfortunately, her response did not satisfy Brandon.
The man poked her cheek. "You know that’s not what I meant."
"Ah? It’s not? Then what is it?" Abigail’s black, bright eyes looked innocent, but it only made her more enticing.
Brandon felt itchy in his heart. "Of course, it’s about how you’re going to punish me tonight."
Abigail chuckled. "Actually, I’ve already forgiven you."
Last time at the hospital, she had been brazen enough to want to sleep with this man, but when it came down to it, despite having lived two lifetimes, she was still a good young woman with no sex life experience and felt a little scared.
After all, what if it didn’t go well and things got awkward?
"No, you haven’t." Brandon no longer cared about what Abigail was thinking. As an older youth, with a one-year-old son, who hadn’t slept with his wife yet, he would be ridiculed by everyone.
Some might actually suspect he was impotent.
"I have..." Abigail looked at the man’s devastatingly handsome face, each word of refusal felt like a struggle.
"Baby, your drool is about to fall." Just as Abigail hesitated, staring intently at the man, Brandon suddenly said.
Abigail hurriedly wiped her mouth in shock, finding nothing there, and gave the man an annoyed glance. She slapped his hand away in embarrassment and walked towards the door.
Then she heard Brandon "kindly" remind her from behind, "I’ll be waiting for you in bed tonight."
Abigail stumbled at the door and nearly fell. The next moment, her steps quickened, and she ran to Teddy’s room, blushing.
Brandon watched Abigail flee and laughed happily. Glancing at the time, it wasn’t even two o’clock, but he had already begun to look forward to the night.
However, looking forward as he might, he did not forget to urge Alex to expedite the search. He knew that even though Abigail said so, being abandoned by her biological parents was a barrier in her heart.
He hoped his woman could let go of all her past burdens and move forward.
...
Hospital.
After Abigail and Brandon left, Daniel returned to the ward.
Contrary to what he had told Abigail earlier, the person in the ward was not asleep. She sat in a wheelchair, blankly staring out the window, seemingly lost in thought.
The woman was in her fifties, with a typical Eastern face, thin and weak. She wasn’t wearing a hospital gown but a white linen dress, soft and light, making her look even more fragile, as if she could be blown away by the wind at any moment, which contrasted starkly with her irritable nature.
Daniel approached, feeling pained. "Mama, are you thinking of her again?"
He rarely called Clara Smith "mom"; most of the time, he called her "sister."
She said it made her feel younger, but Daniel knew his mother had always imagined herself as someone else.
"Gavin, do you think there really is a soul after death?" Clara looked at the trees gently swaying in the wind outside.
By mid-March, Durin was already lush with the colors of spring.
"Maybe." Daniel replied softly. His Chinese name was Gavin Richardson.
"Do you think I’ll see her there?" Clara didn’t move, her whole being seemed to be merging with the air, her voice tinged with a certain ethereality.
Daniel’s eyes reddened. "Mama, it’s just a simple surgery, you’ll be fine."
"Gavin, don’t lie to me. Although I didn’t study medicine well back then, I know this isn’t a simple surgery. Besides..." At this point, Clara’s thin voice carried a hint of self-mockery. "I should have been gone twenty-eight years ago."
After Clara finished speaking, the light in her eyes dimmed. Over the years, she hadn’t had much hope for life, and after hearing about Abigail’s sudden death, she had lost the will to live even more.
Daniel couldn’t help but grab his mother’s hand. "Mama, won’t you go back to visit? Sister is gone, but grandfather is still there. If he knew he lost another young one, how could he bear it?"
"That’s why I won’t go back. Don’t tell him I’m gone," Clara murmured, eyes filled with an uncommon stubbornness.
"But last time, he already knew you were alive. I heard that Brandon Piers is looking for you, probably at grandfather’s behest." Daniel shared the latest news he had received.
Clara was stunned. Were they looking for her?
Sitting in her wheelchair, she looked at her legs and then shook her head vehemently. "Don’t let them find me, don’t let them find me..."
"But..."
"I don’t want to see anyone!" Clara’s emotions became agitated again.
"Okay, okay, no one’s seeing you. Calm down, we won’t see anyone." Daniel quickly held his mother’s hand, softly comforting her.
Finally, after a long while, Clara’s emotions settled, but she looked even more frail.
Daniel sighed lightly. "I’ll carry you to bed to rest. We haven’t finalized the surgery plan, so there’s no rush."
Clara didn’t speak, her entire being exuding a sense of death.
Seeing this, Daniel carefully lifted her from the wheelchair. His mother was already thin, and because of her leg disability, her weight was under eighty pounds, barely anything to carry.
After settling her in bed, Daniel wanted to say more, but Clara had closed her eyes without any intention of talking.
Seeing this, Daniel tucked in her blanket and quietly left the ward.
He didn’t know when his mother became disabled, but she had been in a wheelchair for as long as he could remember. Before Abigail’s accident, although she had been ill, medication had kept her somewhat stable, both emotionally and physically. But since his sister’s accident last April.
It was like the last straw that broke his mother’s spirit and body. Over the eleven months of treatment, she hadn’t improved but worsened.
Daniel worried that she might not survive the chest surgery.
