Chapter 89: Yes, We

Chapter 89: Yes, We

As Ellen continued to hold the shirt and hat close to her chest, her smile still lingering, but she suddenly noticed something that made her pause. She tilted her head, her eyes narrowing slightly as she observed Mason more closely. He wasn’t wearing his usual work attire. Instead of the crisp suit and tie that he usually wore to work, he was dressed casually—comfortable jeans and a simple t-shirt that made him look more relaxed than she was used to seeing.

"Mason," Ellen began, her tone curious, "you’re not dressed for work."

Mason looked down at himself, as if only just realizing what he was wearing, and then shrugged nonchalantly. "That’s because I’m not going in today," he replied, his voice casual. "I’m taking the day off."

Ellen’s heart skipped a beat at his words, and she couldn’t help the wide smile that spread across her face. It was rare for Mason to take a day off, and the idea that he was doing so today made her feel an unexpected warmth. Maybe... just maybe... they could spend some time together. The thought filled her with a hopeful anticipation. They could stay in, watch a movie, or just relax at home. Even the simplest of activities would be special if they were together.

But before she could voice any of these thoughts, Mason’s next words brought her crashing back to reality. "I need to go to Aubrey’s," he said, his tone still casual, as if it was the most natural thing in the world.

Ellen’s smile faltered, and she quickly glanced up at Mason, her expression shifting to one of disapproval. Did she just hear him right? Did he really say he was going to Aubrey’s? "What did you say?" Ellen asked, trying to keep her tone steady, though she could feel her irritation bubbling beneath the surface.

Mason looked at her, raising an eyebrow as if confused by her reaction. "I said I need to go to Aubrey’s," he repeated.

Ellen’s eyes widened in disbelief, and this time she couldn’t hold back the high-pitched "What?!" that escaped her lips. She couldn’t believe what she was hearing. After all that anticipation, all the hope she had just felt—only to have Mason tear it all down with a single line.

She stared at him, her thoughts racing. What did he want to do with Aubrey? Was he planning to give her the "I Love London" shirt too? Did Aubrey get a souvenir as well? The thought made her stomach twist with a mix of jealousy and irritation. Ellen’s mind was spinning, and she could feel her cheeks flushing with a mixture of embarrassment and frustration.

"Are you serious?" Ellen asked, her voice tinged with disbelief as she looked at Mason. She could hardly believe he would choose to spend his day off with Aubrey instead of her. "What are you going to do with her? Give her a souvenir too? Does she get a shirt that says ’I Love London’ as well?" Her words were sharp, cutting through the air like a blade, as she let out the frustration she had been holding in.

Mason, who had been watching her closely, couldn’t help but notice the way her eyes flashed with annoyance, the slight frown tugging at her lips. He tried to suppress a smile, but the corners of his mouth twitched up just the slightest bit, betraying his amusement. Ellen’s reaction was both endearing and amusing to him. But he knew better than to mock her at that moment.

"Aubrey’s sick," Mason said, finally breaking the tension as he offered an explanation. His tone softened, showing that he wasn’t as oblivious as Ellen might have thought. "I just want to visit her and see how she’s doing."

Ellen watched Mason carefully, her mind racing with conflicting thoughts. Normally, she would feel sympathy for someone who was sick. But this was Aubrey they were talking about, and everything felt different when it came to her. Ellen couldn’t shake the suspicion that this was all just another one of Aubrey’s attempts to get Mason’s attention. The timing seemed too convenient, too perfectly orchestrated. How could she trust it?

She bit her lip, trying to push down the bitterness that was threatening to bubble to the surface. Ellen knew she could voice her dislike for what Mason was about to do, but she also knew that it wouldn’t get her anywhere. Instead, an idea popped into her mind—something that might give her a bit more control over the situation.

Ellen looked up at Mason, her expression suddenly shifting from concern to one of calm composure. "Really?" she said, her voice taking on a neutral tone. "Is it bad?"

Mason shook his head slightly. "I don’t know," he replied, his tone neutral. "Gerald only said Aubrey was sick."

Ellen felt a pang of irritation at the mention of Gerald’s name. Of course, Gerald. Aubrey’s accomplice in almost everything. Ellen’s mind raced as she tried to suppress the bitterness that welled up inside her. Why wasn’t she even surprised? Gerald was always there, always helping Aubrey with whatever scheme she had cooked up. It wasn’t hard to believe that he might be helping her with another lie.

"Then we should go visit Aubrey together. You know, to see how she’s doing. I hope she’s fine." There was a slight emphasis on the word "we," a subtle challenge in her suggestion. She hoped Aubrey was fine—more than fine, in fact—so Mason wouldn’t feel the need to do anything more than just a brief visit.

Mason’s expression remained unreadable as he looked at her. His dark eyes seemed to study her carefully, as if he was trying to gauge the meaning behind her words.

"We?" Mason finally asked, his tone even but laced with a hint of curiosity. He didn’t seem angry or dismissive, just... curious.

Ellen tilted her head slightly, her lips curling into a sweet smile. "Yes, we," she repeated, keeping her voice light and casual. "I can come with you, can’t I?"
