Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 86: Not A Perv
Chapter 86: Not A Perv
Ellen slowly opened her eyes. The room was still dark, and she wondered if it was still night or if morning was on its way. She blinked a few times, a small smile curling on her lips as she took in her surroundings. For a moment, she couldn’t believe she had actually slept in Mason’s room. The room was familiar yet foreign, a place she had always been curious about but never allowed to enter.
She turned her head slightly and saw the clock on the bedside table. It was still early, just 5 a.m. There was plenty of time before she needed to get up and start her day. Deciding to savor the quiet of the morning a little longer, Ellen snuggled back into the pillows, her body relaxed as she turned onto her side.
The sight that greeted her made her smile widen. Mason was there, right beside her, his eyes closed, his breathing steady. He looked so peaceful, so different from the stern, focused man she was used to seeing. It was a rare moment, seeing him like this, and she allowed herself to enjoy it for a few more seconds.
But then, as the realization hit her, her heart skipped a beat. Wait—Mason was right beside her. Her eyes flew open as panic set in. How had she not noticed him earlier? Since when had he been there? God, he was home early!
"Oh, shit," Ellen muttered under her breath. Her mind raced. He must have come home sometime during the night and found her in his bed. Was he mad? She had clearly overstepped her boundaries, entering his room when he had explicitly forbidden it. Yet, instead of waking her or throwing her out, he had simply climbed into bed and gone to sleep. Why hadn’t he chased her away?
Ellen’s head was spinning as she tried to come up with excuses for why she ended up in his room
Maybe there was a blackout last night. Yeah, and she just ended up in the wrong room because it was too dark to see.
Or maybe she heard something coming from his room, like a rat or something, and went to check it out. She could’ve ended up falling asleep there after being so exhausted. That made sense, right?
Ellen’s thoughts spiraled as she tried to piece together the situation. She cautiously shifted a little closer to get a better look at him, her curiosity getting the best of her. His face was softened by sleep, the usual hardness gone. His lashes cast delicate shadows on his cheeks, and his lips were slightly parted, his breathing deep and even. The strong line of his jaw, the curve of his lips—it was all so captivating Even with only a small amount of light and all the darkness.
Her gaze lingered on him, taking in every detail. He looked so different when he wasn’t scowling or focused on his work. The man beside her was someone she barely recognized, yet at the same time, she felt an odd connection to him at that moment. There was a vulnerability in his sleep that she found endearing, something that made her feel closer to him than ever before.
Suddenly, Mason’s voice broke the silence. "Stop looking at me like that," he muttered, his tone gruff and half-awake. "It’s creeping me out."
Ellen jumped slightly, her heart racing as she realized he was awake. "I thought you were asleep," she stammered, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. How long had he been awake? How much had he noticed?
Mason opened one eye, his gaze meeting hers with a mix of irritation and amusement. "How could you expect me to sleep when a pervert is staring at me?" he shot back, his lips curling into a small smirk.
Ellen’s jaw dropped in disbelief. "I’m not a pervert!" she protested, sitting up and glaring at him. "You better take that back!"
She folded her arms across her chest, her brows furrowing in irritation. Seriously? she thought. What’s wrong with a wife looking at her husband while he’s sleeping?
There was nothing inappropriate about her curiosity; it was just a moment of intimacy.
Mason let out a tired sigh, closing his eyes again. "Whatever. I still want to sleep," he mumbled, rolling onto his side, away from her. "If you’re going to keep shouting, can you do it somewhere else?"
Ellen blinked, taken aback by his casual dismissal. Part of her wanted to stay and argue with him, but another part, the more rational one, knew he was right. He looked exhausted, and she didn’t want to push her luck after already invading his space.
She stared at his back for a moment, biting her lower lip as she debated what to do. The tension she had felt moments ago slowly faded away, replaced by a mix of relief and something else she couldn’t quite put a finger on. He wasn’t angry, at least not in the way she had feared. In fact, his reaction was almost... playful, in a way she hadn’t expected.
Ellen sighed, finally deciding to let it go for now. "Fine," she muttered, sliding out of bed as quietly as she could. "I’ll leave you to your beauty sleep."
Mason didn’t respond, his breathing was getting steady as he dozed off again. She couldn’t help but smile at the sight, feeling a strange warmth in her chest. This side of Mason, the one that wasn’t all business and cold professionalism, was one she found herself wanting to see more of.
As she tiptoed out of the room and gently closed the door behind her, Ellen leaned against the wall for a moment, her mind still racing with everything that had just happened. She had been so worried about his reaction, but now she was more confused than ever.
Why had he let her stay? Why hadn’t he been angry?
Pushing herself off the wall, Ellen made her way back to her own room, her thoughts still lingering on Mason.
Maybe Mason was just taking a moment to get his energy up before yelling at her...
