Chapter 65: Dance With Him
Chapter 65: Dance With Him
Ellen couldn’t believe it—she was actually on her way to dance with Edrick. Her mind raced as they moved towards the dance floor, her hand still caught in his firm yet gentle grip. She hadn’t meant for this to happen; in fact, she’d tried to avoid it.
Just moments before, she had tried to get out of it, her voice soft but firm as she’d said, "I’m not a dancer either, Edrick. Really, I’m not lying. I only danced at my wedding, and even then, Mason had to help me through it."
But Edrick had simply smiled, that charming, confident smile that seemed to win her over every time. "You’ll do just fine," he’d assured her, dismissing her concerns with ease. Without giving her a chance to protest further, he had taken her hand, his grip secure yet gentle as he led her towards the dance floor.
Now, as they reached the center of the room, Ellen stole a quick glance back at Mason. He was still seated at the table, looking entirely unbothered as he casually sipped his champagne. The way he was so relaxed and unbothered sent a pang through Ellen’s chest. She couldn’t help but feel a little disappointed, even though deep down, she’d expected this reaction from him. Mason had given his permission for Edrick to bring her out here, and he didn’t seem to care in the slightest that she was about to dance with another man.
Doesn’t he feel anything? she wondered, her thoughts swirling with confusion and a hint of frustration. Doesn’t he feel... worried? Concerned? Anything at all?
Before she could dwell on it any further, Edrick’s hands found her waist, pulling her attention back to the present moment. The touch was light, yet it held a certain firmness, guiding her gently into the dance. Ellen hesitated, her body stiff with awkwardness as she tried to figure out where to put her hands. Eventually, she settled one hand on his shoulder, feeling the solid muscle beneath his suit, while the other remained loosely at her side.
As the music began to play, Edrick started to sway, leading her in a slow, easy rhythm. Ellen tried to relax, but her thoughts were a mess, and she found it difficult to focus on anything other than the situation she found herself in. Being near Edrick made her feel uneasy; she could feel the warmth radiating from his body, the steady rise and fall of his chest with each breath. And as they moved together, she realized just how close their faces were—closer than she was comfortable with.
Her mind raced back to the thought she’d had earlier. Perhaps she should have just let Edrick tell Mason that they were exes. Maybe then Mason would have shown some kind of reaction, some sign that he cared. The idea of Mason feeling a spark of worry or insecurity at the thought of his wife being with another man, especially one she had a past with, was oddly appealing.
Or... was this all part of Mason’s strategy? Maybe he was okay with her being close to other men because he wanted the same freedom for himself, to be with women like Aubrey. The thought made Ellen’s stomach churn with unease. Oh, hell no, she thought, her grip tightening slightly on Edrick’s shoulder. That wasn’t something she could accept.
As if sensing her internal struggle, Edrick’s voice cut through her thoughts. "You look like you’ve got a lot on your mind," he observed, his tone light, but there was a hint of genuine curiosity in his eyes as he looked down at her.
Ellen quickly turned her gaze away, not wanting to meet his eyes. "No, nothing," she lied, her voice soft as she tried to push the thoughts aside. She forced a smile, though she knew it probably didn’t reach her eyes. "Just... trying not to step on your toes."
Edrick chuckled softly, the sound vibrating through his chest, so close that Ellen could feel it. "You’re doing fine," he assured her, his tone warm, almost soothing.
But Ellen wasn’t really listening. Her mind was still elsewhere, back at the table with Mason, wondering what he was thinking as he sat there, seemingly indifferent. She couldn’t help but glance back at him once more, her eyes searching for any sign that he might be watching her, but Mason was still casually sipping his drink, his attention appearing to be elsewhere. He wasn’t worried at all, was he?
Why couldn’t Mason show a little concern, a little jealousy even? Instead, he was perfectly content to let her dance with another man. Did he not care? Or was it that he trusted her so completely that the idea of her being with Edrick didn’t even cross his mind?
Then, without warning, Edrick smoothly spun her around. The motion caught her off guard, and for a brief second, Ellen’s world tilted. She felt Edrick’s hand slip away, and as she completed the spin, she expected to land back in his arms, to continue the dance with him. But when she steadied herself, the hand that caught her wasn’t Edrick’s.
Ellen blinked, startled to find herself face to face with Mason. His arm was around her waist, his other hand holding hers in a firm, reassuring grip. For a moment, she was too stunned to react, her eyes wide as she looked up at him.
"Mason?" The name slipped out of her mouth in a breathless whisper, her heart suddenly pounding in her chest.
He met her gaze with a calm, steady look, a small smile playing at the corners of his lips. "Surprised?" he asked, his tone light, almost teasing.
Ellen didn’t know what to say. The quick switch really knocked her off her feet, not just physically but emotionally as well. Just a moment ago, she had been dancing with Edrick. And now, here she was, in Mason’s arms, his presence grounding her in a way that she hadn’t expected.
"Mason..." she repeated, her voice trailing off as she searched his face for any sign of what he was thinking. But as always, Mason’s expression was composed, giving nothing away.
He began to move, guiding her into the rhythm of the music with an effortless grace that Ellen had almost forgotten he possessed. Despite his earlier claim that he wasn’t much of a dancer, Mason was leading her with ease, his movements smooth and confident. It was so different from the stiff, awkward dance she had shared with Edrick just moments ago.
Ellen’s mind was still racing, trying to make sense of everything. Had Mason seen something that made him step in? Was this his way of showing that he cared, that he wasn’t totally uninterested in what was happening?
