Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife
Chapter 49: Exact Opposite

Chapter 49: Exact Opposite

Edrick stopped the car in front of the hotel where Ellen was staying. The soft glow of the hotel’s lights reflected on the car’s windows, casting a warm ambiance inside. Ellen turned to Edrick with a grateful smile. "Thank you for the ride," she said, her voice sincere.

Edrick shrugged with a twinkle in his eye. "Don’t mention it."

She already told Edrick earlier that it was fine if she went back on her own, but he didn’t like the idea at all. Ellen appreciated his concern but felt a bit awkward about it. She unfastened her seatbelt, the click sounding louder in the enclosed space, and reached for the door handle. Just as she was about to step out, Edrick called out to her. "Ellen?"

She paused, turning to face him, her hand still on the door. "Yes?"

Edrick’s expression was earnest, his gaze unwavering. "If Mason is too busy and you feel like you need a friend, you’re more than welcome to look for me."

Ellen’s throat tightened at his words, she felt a swirl of different emotions inside. She gulped hard, managing to force out a reply. "Safe drive, Edrick."

She quickly stepped out of the car, her heart pounding in her chest. The cool night air hit her as she hurriedly walked towards the hotel entrance, feeling as if she was being chased by a ghost. The automatic doors slid open, and she entered the lobby, her footsteps echoing on the marble floor.

Her pace quickened as she made her way to the elevator, repeatedly pressing the button as if doing so would make it arrive faster. The wait felt agonizingly long, her mind racing with thoughts of Edrick’s offer. Finally, the elevator doors slid open with a ding, and she stepped inside, pressing the button for her floor multiple times.

The ride up seemed to take forever, the quiet hum of the elevator only cranking up her anxiety. When the doors finally opened, she practically ran out, fumbling with her room key. She slipped inside, closing the door behind her with a quick click.

With a sigh of relief, she kicked off her shoes, the sound echoing in the empty room. She tossed her bag and shopping bags onto a nearby couch and threw herself onto the bed, the plush mattress comforting against her tense body.

Ellen lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, she felt overwhelmed by a confusing blend of memories and feelings. She knew there was a possibility she might run into Edrick again, but she never thought she would actually encounter him in Paris of all places.

As much as she tried, Ellen couldn’t get Edrick’s image out of her mind. He was the exact opposite of Mason in so many ways. Mason was composed, serious, and often preoccupied with his work. His stoic nature made it difficult for Ellen to gauge his true feelings.

On the other hand, Edrick was filled with warmth and a constant smile that seemed to light up any room he entered. He also had a good sense of humor and a way of making her laugh that Mason never quite managed to achieve.

Ellen sat up and hugged her knees to her chest, resting her chin on them. She thought back to the moments she spent with Edrick earlier. The way he had looked at her, his eyes filled with genuine concern and a hint of something deeper, something she couldn’t quite place. It was confusing and unsettling. She sighed, running a hand through her hair. She had to admit, Edrick’s presence had a way of making her feel seen and appreciated.

After a quick shower, she changed into a comfortable pajamas, her hair still damp from the water. She sat on the edge of the bed, her phone in hand, scrolling through Mason’s schedule. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw that Mason didn’t have anything scheduled for the evening. He was free, which meant he was likely in his hotel room.

Ellen took a deep breath, trying to gather her courage. She decided to go to Mason’s room and talk to him. Ellen hoped that focusing on Mason would help her fully let go of Edrick and the confusion. She stood up, cleared her throat, and practiced lines to say to him.

She rehearsed in her head: "Hi Mason, how was your day?" and "I thought we could spend some time together, maybe grab a coffee?" But the words just didn’t seem right.

As she walked down the hallway towards Mason’s room, she moved slowly, making each step count. She could feel her heart pounding in her chest, the nerves building with each step. She practiced her lines again, trying to make them sound natural and heartfelt. "Hey there, just wanted to see how you’re doing."

When she arrived at Mason’s door, she hesitated for a moment before ringing the doorbell. She waited, the silence stretching out, making her more anxious. After a few moments with no response, she rang the doorbell again, her fingers trembling slightly. Again, there was no answer.

Only on the third ring did the door finally open, revealing Mason. He stood there with one hand rubbing his wet hair with a towel, looking slightly annoyed. His shirt was unbuttoned, and water droplets still clung to his chest. His eyes were sharp, but there was a hint of confusion as he took in her presence.

She was about to give up, convinced tonight was just one of those evenings where nothing seemed to go right. Her fingers had practically grown numb from ringing the bell so insistently. She nearly walked away, resigning herself to a restless night of thinking about missed chances.

But now, with Mason in front of her, that sinking feeling in her chest began to ease. Ellen offered a small, nervous smile. "Hi, Mason."

Mason glanced back into the room briefly before looking at her again. "What do you want, Ellen?" He sounded a bit unfriendly and it stung more than she cared to admit.

Ellen swallowed hard, trying to keep her composure. "Can I come in?"
