Chapter 47: Help From Ex

Ellen stepped out of the hotel, feeling a crisp breeze brush against her skin. The morning air energized her and made her feel like anything was possible. She took a deep breath, savoring the freshness, and began her walk along the bustling Parisian street. The city was already alive with activity, and she couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement.

As she strolled, Ellen took in the charming architecture, the small shops with their colorful canopies, and the vibrant flowers in the window boxes. The sound of people chatting in French, the clinking of cups in cafés, and the occasional honk of a car made the city feel like an interesting mix of foreign and familiar.

After a few minutes, she found herself at the café at the end of the street. The memory of Aubrey’s words from the morning resurfaced, and Ellen’s heart sank a little. Aubrey had mentioned spending time with Mason at this very café, walking together, reminiscing about their high school days. The thought gnawed at her, filling her with doubt and jealousy.

"What if that’s true?" Ellen muttered to herself, her brows furrowing in frustration. "What if Mason really is starting to feel something for her again?"

She stomped her foot in a rare display of irritation, drawing a few curious glances from passersby. Her face flushed slightly, a mix of anger and embarrassment, as she looked at the café with annoyance. She could almost picture Mason and Aubrey sitting at one of those cute tables, laughing and enjoying each other’s company.

"Gosh!" Ellen exclaimed softly, her hands balling into fists at her sides. She shook her head, trying to dispel the negative thoughts. She couldn’t let her imagination run wild like this.

Deciding she needed to distract herself, Ellen resumed her walk, casting one last annoyed glance at the café before turning away. She casually walked through the streets of Paris, letting the city’s beauty and charm lift her spirits. The elegant buildings, the artistic flair in the shop windows, and the enticing aroma of freshly baked bread wafting from a nearby bakery all worked their magic on her.

Ellen found herself drawn to a small park, a peaceful green area in the middle of the city hustle. She took a seat on a bench and watched as children played, couples strolled hand in hand, and elderly folks fed the birds. The serene setting made her feel calm, and she felt a smile tug at her lips.

She decided to explore more of what Paris had to offer. Ellen pulled out her phone and checked for nearby attractions. The Louvre was within walking distance, and she felt a thrill of excitement at the thought of seeing the world-famous museum.

As she walked, Ellen allowed herself to get lost in the streets of Paris. She stopped at a street vendor and bought a crepe, savoring the sweet and savory flavors as she continued her journey. The Eiffel Tower loomed in the distance, a constant reminder of the city’s iconic charm.

Arriving at the Louvre, Ellen joined the line of tourists waiting to enter. The grandeur of the museum was breathtaking, and she felt a sense of awe as she stepped inside. She spent hours wandering through the galleries, marveling at the masterpieces. The Mona Lisa, with her enigmatic smile, the grandeur of the Egyptian artifacts, and the beauty of the Renaissance art all captivated her.

Ellen took her time, letting the art speak to her, each piece telling a story. She lost herself in the beauty and history, allowing the worries about Mason and Aubrey to fade into the background. Here, in this vast collection of human creativity, her problems seemed small and insignificant.

After leaving the Louvre, Ellen found a small café nearby and sat down to enjoy a light lunch. She ordered a salad and a glass of wine, savoring the flavors and the ambiance. The café was packed, but she felt cozy just being another face in the crowd.

Once she finished her meal, Ellen decided to browse some nearby stores for souvenirs. The narrow streets were lined with charming shops, each one offering a unique glimpse into Parisian culture. Ellen wandered into a small boutique filled with trinkets and keepsakes. She picked up a delicate porcelain figurine, admiring its craftsmanship, before moving on to a display of handmade jewelry.

As Ellen busied herself with selecting a few gifts, she suddenly heard a commotion near the entrance of the store. A man’s voice rang out, commanding and firm. "I believe you have something that belongs to my friend."

Ellen looked up and saw the back of a tall man in a sharp suit, his hand firmly gripping the wrist of another man, who was squirming and trying to break free. The man’s other hand held what looked like a wallet. Ellen gasped, instinctively checking her own bag. Her wallet was missing!

"Oh my God," she whispered, feeling a rush of panic. She watched as the man in the suit took the wallet from the pickpocket, who then tore free and ran out of the store, looking terrified.

How could she be so careless? She had read countless articles warning tourists about pickpockets in Paris, yet she had allowed herself to be an easy target. Her mind raced with a mixture of relief and some self-blame.

Thank God the kind man was here to help her. She shuddered at the thought of losing her wallet. The thought of Mason finding out made her stomach churn. How would he react to her carelessness? She could almost hear him lecturing her about how she let this happen.

The man turned around, and Ellen’s breath caught in her throat. His piercing blue eyes locked onto hers as he approached, holding her wallet.

"You should be more careful, Ellen," he said, his tone a mix of worry and a bit of a lecture.

Ellen’s heart hammered in her chest as she saw Edrick right in front of her.
