Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 43: Follow Him
Chapter 43: Follow Him
Ellen stared out of the cab window, her thoughts racing as she soaked in the beautiful streets of Paris. She had always heard that Paris was a beautiful city, and she had seen countless videos online showcasing its charm. The city of love, they called it. Ellen guessed that was probably why the author had chosen Paris as the setting for Mason’s business trip and the place where he and Aubrey would spend intimate moments together.
Unfortunately, Ellen couldn’t really admire the scenery or think about sightseeing. She was here for a whole other reason. She was on a mission: to stop whatever Aubrey was trying to do with Mason.
Her conversation with Philip the other day hadn’t been just about asking if Mason was bringing anyone. She had also got Philip’s help to arrange a flight the day after Mason and book her into the same hotel where Mason was staying. Philip had once told her she could reach out if she ever needed anything, and this was the time.
Philip had been incredibly helpful, not only securing her travel arrangements but also giving her Mason’s schedule during the business trip. Ellen felt more than a bit suspicious about his eagerness, but she would use any help she could get.
The cab pulled up in front of the hotel, and Ellen took a deep breath before stepping out. She walked into the grand lobby, her suitcase trailing behind her. The receptionist greeted her with a warm smile and handed her the key to her room.
"Enjoy your stay, madame," the receptionist said, her French accent adding to the charm of the place.
"Thank you," Ellen replied, forcing a smile. She took the elevator to her floor, the soft hum of the lift doing little to calm her nerves. When she reached her room, the concierge who had carried her bags opened the door for her and set the luggage inside.
"Merci," Ellen said, tipping him before closing the door. She took a moment to look around. The room was elegantly decorated with rich fabrics and classic French furnishings. The bed was large and inviting, with a plush duvet and an array of pillows. A small seating area by the window offered a stunning view of the city below, and the bathroom was luxurious, with marble countertops and a deep soaking tub.
Ellen walked around, touching the soft fabric of the curtains and the smooth surface of the dresser. Despite the beauty of the room, she couldn’t shake her anxiety. She had to meet Philip and get more information. She left her suitcase by the bed and headed back to the elevator, her heart pounding with anticipation.
She thought to herself that she really could use some rest right now, but she didn’t think she could relax with all the worry filling her mind. As the lift made its way to the lobby, Ellen took a deep breath, preparing herself for what was to come. When the doors opened, she stepped out and immediately saw Philip standing there, as if waiting for her.
"Hi, Philip," Ellen said, trying to keep her voice steady.
"Hi, Ellen," Philip replied with a smile. "Welcome to Paris. How was your flight?"
Ellen shrugged. "I’m just glad I made it in one piece."
Philip chuckled. "Did you like the room?"
"It’s nice," Ellen said, nodding. "Thank you for all your help."
"No sweat. It’s just a small thing," Philip said, waving off her thanks.
Ellen glanced around, then leaned in slightly. "Where’s Mason? Is he in a meeting or something?"
Philip’s smile faltered, and he scratched the back of his neck, looking uncomfortable. "Uh, Mason is having lunch in the hotel restaurant...with a friend."
Ellen’s heart sank. She had a feeling she knew who the "friend" was. "Is the friend Aubrey?" she asked, her voice tense.
Philip avoided her gaze, scratching his neck again. "You must be really good at charades."
Ellen’s blood ran cold. She forced a smile. "Thank you for the information, Philip," she said before bolting towards the restaurant.
As she approached the restaurant, Ellen’s mind raced. She had to stay calm and composed. She couldn’t let her emotions get the better of her. Pushing through the doors, she scanned the room, her eyes quickly landing on Mason and Aubrey sitting at a table by the window.
Ellen thought to herself that she couldn’t have been more right. Aubrey was really here, with Mason. She silently applauded Aubrey’s effort in flying to Paris just so she could be with him.
Ugh, that Aubrey was really something, she thought, feeling a wave of frustration wash over her. How far was Aubrey willing to go to get close to Mason? The lengths she went made Ellen’s head spin.
From where she was standing, Ellen could see how happy Aubrey looked, her face lit up with a constant smile as she gazed at Mason. Mason, on the other hand, was eating his lunch in peace, occasionally nodding his head as Aubrey spoke.
They looked like the main couple in some kind of soap opera, but unfortunately for them, Ellen was about to break the scene. If Aubrey was already making her moves, Ellen had to be one step ahead. Gathering her courage, she walked confidently to their table.
"Mason," she called, her voice steady and clear.
Without missing a beat, Ellen took a seat right beside Mason. Both Aubrey and Mason looked at her, but Mason didn’t appear shocked, nor did he say anything. His calm demeanor contrasted sharply with Aubrey’s stunned expression.
She turned her gaze to Aubrey, and all the tiredness and fatigue from her long flight seemed to vanish in an instant. Aubrey’s expression was priceless: a mix of shock, anger, and disgust. Ellen had to hold back a laugh as Aubrey threw a sharp gaze at her.
Ellen couldn’t stop the wave of satisfaction that hit her. She had already told Aubrey she wouldn’t just sit around doing nothing, she would fight back. Aubrey might have thought she could swoop in and steal Mason away, but Ellen was here to prove how wrong she was.
