Chapter 39: Seeking Tips

Chapter 39: Seeking Tips

The sun was warm and bright as Ellen and Helga sat in Helga’s backyard, sipping on iced tea. Ellen took a sip of her iced tea, savoring the coolness. "You have a really nice house, Helga," she said, looking around with admiration.

Helga smiled warmly. "Thank you, Ellen. Yours is lovely too."

They both fell silent for a moment, enjoying the peaceful surroundings. Ellen felt totally at ease, but there was also a curiosity nagging at her. Then Helga decided to break the silence.

"By the way, last night I went by your house, but you weren’t there," Helga said casually, taking another sip of her tea.

Ellen nodded. "Oh, yeah. Mason and I went to my father’s house and stayed the night there."

Helga’s eyes widened with interest. "That sounds nice. How was it?"

"It was... interesting," Ellen replied, a slight smile playing on her lips. She hesitated, then decided to change the subject to something she had been curious about for a while. "Helga, can I ask you something?"

"Of course," Helga said, leaning in slightly, her eyes sparkling with curiosity.

"How did you meet Jax?" Ellen asked, her tone light but genuinely intrigued.

Helga’s face softened at the mention of Jax. "Oh, that’s a story. I actually fell for Jax first. He didn’t really pay any attention to me at the beginning. We met at a mutual friend’s party. I noticed him right away, tall, handsome, but a bit reserved."

Ellen leaned forward, fascinated. "Really? What happened next?"

Helga laughed softly, her eyes distant as she recalled the memory. "I tried to get his attention in little ways. Smiling at him, striking up conversations. But he was always polite, never rude, just... distant."

Ellen nodded, feeling a pang of sympathy for Helga. She could imagine how difficult it must have been to like someone who seemed uninterested. "So, what made Jax finally notice you?"

Helga’s smile widened. "It was persistence, really. I kept showing up at the same places he did. Not in a stalker way," she added quickly with a laugh. "But I made sure we had opportunities to interact. Eventually, he started to see me differently. He told me later that what really caught his attention was my kindness and genuine interest in him. I wasn’t trying to change him or impress him; I just wanted to get to know him."

Ellen listened intently, absorbing every word. She thought to herself that maybe she could use some of these tips with Mason. "That’s really sweet, Helga. So, it was your kindness that won him over?"

Helga nodded. "Yes, and also being patient. I didn’t push him to feel something he wasn’t ready for. I just let things develop naturally. Over time, he started to see me as more than just someone he knew casually. We became friends first, and then it grew into something more."

Ellen’s mind raced with thoughts. Could she apply this to her relationship with Mason? Be patient, kind, and let things develop naturally? She realized she had been so focused on trying to make Mason see her in a certain way that she hadn’t given him the space to develop his feelings at his own pace.

Helga observed Ellen’s thoughtful expression. "Are you asking about this because of Mason?" she asked gently.

Ellen looked at Helga, a bit surprised. "How did you know?"

Helga chuckled softly. "I’m not the most intuitive person, but I can see there’s like a huge wall between you and him."

Ellen sighed and said in a small voice, "That obvious, huh?" She thought to herself that she didn’t need to bother to lie or cover it; it was easy to see.

Helga reached over and tapped Ellen’s hand. "It’s fine. I’ll help you in any way I can."

Ellen smiled at that, feeling a bit more hopeful. Later that day, she decided to put Helga’s advice into action. She found Mason sitting in the living room, absorbed in his phone. Taking a deep breath, she approached him and sat on the same couch.

"Hey, you," Ellen said with a smile.

Mason glanced up briefly before returning his gaze to his phone. "What do you want? Are you going to interrogate me like last night?"

Ellen shook her head. "No, I just want to sit here and talk with you. Is that wrong?"

Mason remained silent, his eyes still on his phone. Ellen felt a flicker of frustration but calmed herself down. She took another deep breath and tried again.

"So, how was your day?" she asked.

"Pretty much the same," Mason gave a short reply.

Ellen bit her lip, trying to keep the conversation going. "How’s work?"

"Busy as usual," Mason said, his tone indifferent.

Ellen felt a surge of annoyance but reminded herself of Helga’s advice. She took a deep breath, trying to keep her voice steady. "Don’t you want to know about my day?"

Mason finally looked up from his phonel. "Isn’t it the same?"

Ellen felt like steam was coming out of her ears. She clenched her fists, trying to stay calm. "I bet you don’t know what I usually do. And please, look at me when I’m talking to you. It’s rude to look at your phone when someone is talking."

Surprisingly, Mason complied. He put his phone down on the table, screen down, and looked at Ellen. "Happy now?" he asked, his eyes were focused on her.

Ellen stammered a bit, not expecting him to actually listen. "Yeah, um, what got you so occupied on your phone anyway?"

Mason’s expression softened a bit. "It was Gerald. He invited us for dinner tomorrow night."

Ellen’s face fell at the mention of Gerald’s name. Trying to keep her voice steady, she asked, "Just the three of us?"

Mason took a moment before answering, his gaze dropping to his phone again. Ellen held her breath, doing a silent little prayer for Mason to say yes.

After what felt like an eternity, Mason finally said, "No, Aubrey will be there too."

Of course, Aubrey had to come too.
