Chapter 33: Ex

Ellen knew who Edrick was.

His name was Edrick Pierce, Ellen Winters’ high school boyfriend. They had loved each other deeply, but their relationship had ended abruptly when Edrick had to move away after graduation. Their love story had been a significant part of her past, but in the novel, he was just name-dropped and never really showed up. And now, out of nowhere, he had shown up, catching Ellen completely off guard.

Ellen rolled over in bed, staring at the ceiling. Last night’s housewarming party had felt more like a high school reunion. She had only learned a bit more about Mason’s past and had unexpectedly encountered her ex-boyfriend, someone she’d never even seen before. She could hardly believe it.

She knew this happened because she had changed the course of events when she had intervened in the accident that was supposed to involve Aubrey. She had expected some changes in the story, but nothing this extreme. Running into Edrick was the last thing she had anticipated.

"Okay, relax," she whispered to herself. "Just relax. It was just a coincidence. We happened to meet there, and nothing serious happened." But what if they met again in the future? It was possible.

Ellen sat up on the edge of her bed, scratching her head. "Right, I just have to act cool if we meet again," she muttered. But she needed more information about Edrick. She was completely in the dark about him now.

Maybe Colleen could help. Sisters were supposed to share things with each other, right? Ellen Winters must have told her sister about her problems, including her ex.

She stood up and walked over to the mirror, looking at her reflection. Her hair was a mess, and her eyes were puffy from lack of sleep. The events of the previous night had left her feeling unsettled. She ran her fingers through her hair, trying to tame the wild strands.

Ellen decided to take a shower to help wake herself up and clear her mind. The hot water felt soothing against her skin, washing away some of the stress. After drying off and getting dressed, she went downstairs to prepare breakfast, not only for herself, but also Mason.

It had become a habit over the past few days, and she was grateful that Mason seemed to enjoy it. No, he didn’t praise her cooking or dig in happily, but he finished his food. Wasn’t that good enough already?

Mason came into the dining room not long after, dressed in his usual work attire. They started having breakfast together, the silence between them comfortable. Ellen then remembered details about how Mason and Edrick seemed to know each other, and she decided to ask about it.

"Do you know the man from last night?" Ellen asked, trying to sound casual. "The one you called Edrick?"

Mason looked up from his plate, his expression thoughtful. "Yeah, I know him."

Ellen nodded, taking a sip of her coffee. "Were you high school friends like you and Jax? Or business partners?"

Mason finished chewing before answering. "We’re good."

Ellen blinked, confused by his vague answer. She wanted to press further, but Mason seemed closed off about the topic. She didn’t want to push him, especially not so early in the day.

Mason looked up from his plate, his expression curious. "Why are you so interested in him?" he asked, sounding more curious than judgmental.

Ellen chuckled nervously, trying to deflect the tension. "Oh, I accidentally bumped into him and spilled my drink on him," she said, her voice light. She decided to leave out the part where Edrick was her ex-boyfriend and how much she wanted to understand her husband’s relationship with him.

"Oh, like when you spilled your drink on me on the plane," he said, referring to their honeymoon flight where Ellen had accidentally drenched Mason with a cup of juice.

Ellen laughed, the memory making her cheeks warm. "Yeah, exactly like that," she said, her laugh a bit forced as she tried to cover her nerves. "I guess I’m just a bit clumsy."

Mason shook his head. "You need to stop being so clumsy."

Ellen smiled awkwardly. "I’ll try," she promised, though her mind was still buzzing with thoughts about Edrick and the unexpected encounter.

She watched Mason as he continued eating, his demeanor calm and composed. Despite the lighthearted exchange, Ellen couldn’t shake the feeling that there was more to the story between Mason and Edrick. But for now, she decided to let it go.

As Mason took another bite of the fluffy pancakes, topped with fresh strawberries and a drizzle of maple syrup, Ellen couldn’t help but ask, "How’s the breakfast? Do you like it?"

Mason looked up from his plate, meeting her gaze. He chewed thoughtfully for a moment before responding. "It’s delicious," he said, his tone sincere.

Ellen’s heart did a little happy dance at his words. She smiled warmly, feeling a sense of accomplishment. It was progress. Usually, he only said it was edible, a neutral comment that left her wondering if he truly enjoyed her cooking. But now, he had called it delicious. It felt like a small victory.

"Really? I’m glad you like it," she replied, her smile widening. She watched as Mason continued to eat, his approval giving her a boost of confidence.

They finished breakfast in pretty much silence after that, and Mason soon left for work. After Mason left, Ellen cleaned up the plates and put everything away. She was about to head back to her room when the doorbell rang. Without thinking much about it, she opened the door.

There was Aubrey, her face all serious with her arms crossed.

"Hi, Ellen," Aubrey said, her voice devoid of warmth or friendliness.

Ellen looked back at her, matching her serious demeanor. "Hi, Aubrey," she replied, her tone cautious. She felt a wave of tension settle over her, her morning shattered by the unexpected visitor.

Ellen’s mind raced as she tried to read Aubrey’s intentions. What did she want now?
