Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 31: Housewarming Party
Chapter 31: Housewarming Party
Ellen stood in front of her full-length mirror, taking one last look at herself before heading to Helga’s housewarming party. She had chosen a simple yet elegant navy-blue dress that fell just below her knees.
As she admired her reflection, Ellen couldn’t help but think about her eagerness to attend the party. There were two main reasons driving her enthusiasm. First, she saw this as an opportunity to gather more information about Mason. Any tidbits about his past or his relationships could help her understand him better. Second, she genuinely liked Helga and was looking forward to socializing a bit. It had been a while since she had made a new friend, and Helga seemed like someone she could connect with.
With a satisfied nod, Ellen left her room and made her way to the kitchen. She had bought a bottle of fine wine that morning as a housewarming gift. The bottle of wine sat on the counter, wrapped in a simple yet elegant gift bag. Ellen picked it up carefully, making sure not to damage the delicate wrapping.
Just as she was about to leave the kitchen, Mason walked in. He was dressed in a crisp white dress shirt with the top button undone, paired with dark pants and polished black shoes. The simplicity of his outfit highlighted his natural charm and confidence. Ellen couldn’t help but admire how effortlessly handsome he looked.
"Are you ready to go?" Ellen asked, her eyes meeting his.
Mason nodded. "Yeah."
They made their way to the front door, stepping out into the cool night air. They walked through the front gate and headed toward the street. As they approached the curb, Mason instinctively moved to cross, but Ellen gently held onto his arm.
"Wait," she said softly, looking both ways to ensure no cars were coming. Once she was sure it was safe, she nodded. "Okay, let’s go."
They crossed the street together, and as they reached the other side, Mason cleared his throat, glancing down at his hand, which was still being held by Ellen. Realizing this, Ellen quickly let go, a slight blush creeping onto her cheeks.
"Sorry," she mumbled, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"It’s fine," Mason replied, his tone neutral but with a hint of amusement.
They continued walking towards Helga’s house, which was just a few steps away. The house was impressive, much like Mason’s, with a grand entrance and well-kept landscaping. A few cars were parked along the street, indicating that other guests had already arrived.
As they approached the front door, Ellen took a deep breath and rang the doorbell. The door opened almost immediately, revealing Helga. She looked surprised but delighted to see them.
"Ellen!" Helga exclaimed, stepping forward to hug her. Ellen accepted the hug happily, feeling a genuine warmth from Helga.
"Thank you for coming," Helga said as they let go of each other.
Ellen handed her the wine. "This is for you. I hope you like it."
Helga opened the gift bag and inspected the bottle, her eyes lighting up. "Thank you! Nice taste," she commented.
Mason cleared his throat, drawing their attention. Ellen quickly introduced him. "Helga, this is my husband, Mason."
Helga extended her hand with a friendly smile. "Helga Marshall. Nice to meet you, Mason."
Mason shook her hand. "Mason Coldwell."
Helga’s eyes widened slightly with recognition. "I know you! You’re quite famous," she said with a chuckle, ushering them inside. "Come on in."
Ellen and Mason stepped into the house, and Ellen immediately noticed how lively the party was. The living room was packed with guests, mingling and chatting with enthusiasm. The air was filled with the sound of laughter and the soft hum of music playing in the background.
They followed Helga through the crowd. "Sweetheart!" Helga called out as she spotted a man talking with a group of guests. The man turned, and upon seeing Helga, excused himself from the conversation and walked over.
"Look who came," Helga said, gesturing towards Ellen and Mason.
The man raised his eyebrows in surprise when he saw Mason. "Mason," he said, a hint of disbelief in his voice.
"Jax," Mason replied simply.
Jax chuckled. "I can’t believe you’re really our neighbor now."
"Looks like that," Mason responded with a slight smile.
Helga turned to Ellen. "Ellen, this is my husband, Jax. Jax, this is Ellen."
Jax extended his hand to Ellen. "Nice to meet you, Ellen."
"Nice to meet you too, Jax," Ellen replied, shaking his hand.
Helga beamed. "I’m so glad you both could make it. Please, make yourselves at home. There’s plenty of food and drinks. If you need anything, just let me know."
Ellen nodded, feeling a bit more relaxed. "Thank you, Helga."
Helga smiled warmly and then excused herself, probably to put the wine away. Ellen watched her disappear into the crowd before turning back to the counter where a variety of drinks were laid out. She picked up a glass of sparkling water, her gaze drifting as Mason and Jax began discussing work. Their conversation quickly delved into technical details about business strategies and market trends, something that didn’t grab her attention at all.
She took a sip of her drink and decided to explore the house a bit. Maybe she’d find someone to talk to or something interesting to look at. As she walked away, the sound of Mason and Jax’s voices faded into the background. The house was beautifully decorated, with tasteful art on the walls and elegant furniture arranged perfectly in each room. Ellen admired the attention to detail as she wandered through the living room and into a quieter hallway.
Just as she turned a corner, she collided with someone, the impact causing her to spill her drink.
"Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry!" she exclaimed, looking up to see a man standing in front of her. His shirt was now soaked with sparkling water.
The man looked down at his shirt and then back at her, his expression one of surprise mixed with an intense gaze that made Ellen feel a bit unsettled.
