Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 217: All Gone
Chapter 217: All Gone
Ellen sat in her hospital bed, her fingers still trembling slightly from her earlier breakdown. She concentrated on her breathing, trying to calm herself down. The nurse had been kind, rubbing her shoulder and murmuring soothing words while the doctor patiently explained things to her, though they clearly still looked at her with concern.
A small box had been placed on the bedside table next to her. Her belongings, they’d told her—the items they’d found on her at the scene of the accident. Ellen reached out and lifted the box onto her lap. Inside lay her bag, wallet, apartment keys, and her phone. Looking at her phone filled her with a funny kind of hope. She lifted it from the box, noting the shattered screen. Tiny shards of glass scattered on her lap, but it didn’t matter. If it still worked, then maybe she could find... something.
Holding her breath, she pressed the power button. The screen flickered, showing the low-battery warning before going black again. She almost laughed in relief. "Thank god it still works," she muttered, quickly plugging it into the charger by the bed. She leaned back and waited for the device to power up.
When the screen finally lit up, stumbled through her apps, the movements slow and clumsy after her two weeks of immobility. She found the icon for her favorite novel app, her thumb hovering over it for a moment, almost nervous. She tapped it and watched as the app loaded, her heart pounding in her chest.
She went to her library and saw it—the novel, the one that had once consumed her every thought and ultimately, somehow, brought her back into its world. She smiled faintly, the sight of it making her feel closer to that place, closer to Mason.
But as she opened it, her smile quickly faded. Scrolling through the Chapters, she noticed that the list seemed... shorter. Her brow furrowed, and she carefully swiped down, confusion and dread hitting her stomach. So many Chapters were gone, vanished.
She scrolled again, praying her eyes were just playing tricks on her, but it was no mistake. The last Chapter was one titled A Lunch Date?, the Chapter where Aubrey had gone to Mason’s office, asking him to take her for ice cream near their old high school.
This was... right before she’d stepped in and change the story herself. Right before she’d interrupted Aubrey’s plans and taken her place.
"No... no, no, no," she muttered, her fingers tightening around the phone. "How can this be happening? Where... where are the rest of the Chapters?" She raised her voice, filling the quiet with panic. "I spent all my coins unlocking it. I read it all... and now it’s gone?"
She sat still, the words on the screen blurring as her eyes filled with tears. Her hands began to tremble as she held the phone, unable to process what she was seeing. Every Chapter beyond that last, every moment she had spent in that world, was gone.
She gritted her teeth, swiping down the screen until she found the comment section, her fingers flying across the keys as she typed furiously, her desperation pouring out in each word.
Where’s the rest of the Chapters? Why did you delete them?
But when she pressed send, nothing happened. An error message flashed on her screen. She frowned, tapping the comment button again, but the error remained. She tried several more times, switching Chapters, even refreshing the page, but each attempt was met with the same frustrating glitch. She couldn’t leave her comment, couldn’t make her voice heard.
She hurried to the help center, typing in her complaint. She pasted the novel link, detailing how the Chapters had disappeared, pleading for an explanation. But after a moment, she received a reply that made her blood run cold.
Please provide the link to the novel.
Confused, Ellen re-sent the link. But again, the same response came back—as if they couldn’t see the link she’d pasted, as if the novel didn’t exist at all. Her stomach twisted in a knot. She threw her phone onto the bed, letting out a frustrated groan as she buried her face in her hands. "This can’t be real," she whispered, her voice trembling
Her hands went to her hair, gripping handfuls as she struggled to make sense of the situation. Nothing felt right. Nothing felt real. She could still remember every detail of her time in the novel’s world with Mason—his smile, his warmth, the life they had begun to build together. And now, it was as if it had never existed, wiped clean from the world like a bad dream.
Ellen’s breathing became uneven as she sat there, her thoughts racing. What happened to me in that world? Did something go wrong? Did... did she die there? The thought sent a chill down her spine.
And then Mason... She could see his face so clearly in her mind, the way he’d looked at her, the way he’d held her. "What happened to you?"
Panic gripped her chest, and she could feel tears starting to form again. "God, why?" she whispered, her voice barely audible as her tears began to fall. "Why did I have to come back here... when I was finally happy there?" She had found something she’d never believed possible—someone who loved her, a place where she belonged. And now, stripped of that world, she felt emptier than ever.
With a shaky hand, she reached for her phone again, though she had no idea what she was even hoping to find. She opened the novel app once more.
"Please," she whispered, a single tear slipping down her cheek as her eyes fixed on the screen. She wasn’t sure who or what she was begging for, but she kept going. "Let me go back... please. I can’t... I can’t go on here without him." Her voice came out as just a whisper, but in the quiet hospital room, it echoed back to her, reminding her that she was, once again, truly alone.
