Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife -
Chapter 195: Safety Measures
Chapter 195: Safety Measures
Ellen slowly opened her eyes, checking out the unfamiliar space around her. She blinked a few times, her mind catching up with where she was. The large, unfamiliar bed. The faint scent of old wood mixed with a distant trace of lavender from the sheets.
She shifted slightly and noticed the empty space beside her. Mason wasn’t there. Her hand instinctively reached out to feel the cool sheets where he had been. They had slept in the same bed last night, just slept, but it had been a comforting presence after the chaos of the previous night. She sat up slowly, rubbing her eyes and brushing her hair away from her face as she worked on shaking off sleep.
For a moment, she stared at the ceiling, trying to adjust to the fact that she was in a place so deeply connected to Mason’s past. It was strange, being here—where he had grown up, where his family had once lived.
But there was no time to dwell on that now. There was something more urgent lingering in her mind. The break-in.
She read the book only once, but she was pretty sure nothing like this happened in it. If it did, she’d totally remember, right?
She really couldn’t catch a break. Now that she didn’t have to worry that much about Aubrey, she had to deal with this instead.
Come on, this is a romance novel, not a thriller or mystery. What the heck...
Her stomach flipped at the thought, and she pushed the blankets away, swinging her legs over the side of the bed. She had to find Mason.
"Mason?" Ellen called out as she stepped into the hallway. She didn’t hear a response, so she made her way down the stairs. It felt way too quiet in the house, broken only by the sound of footsteps coming from downstairs.
As she reached the bottom of the staircase, Ellen glanced around. The furniture that had been covered in white sheets the night before was now fully uncovered. It felt like the room had come alive, and Mason was there with someone else.
"Vivi?" Ellen called out in surprise as she saw the familiar figure of the maid standing next to Mason.
Vivi smiled warmly when she saw Ellen, and Mason turned toward her, his eyes softening. "You’re awake," he said.
Ellen nodded and made her way over to them, glancing around the room as she did. "You took all the sheets off already?"
Mason shrugged, his hands resting in his pockets. "Figured it would help make the place feel a bit more livable."
Ellen offered a small smile but didn’t say much. She could sense that Mason had been up for a while, organizing things and taking charge.
Mason glanced at Vivi before turning back to Ellen. "From today, Vivi will be staying here with us," he informed her. "She’ll be here to help out and to keep you company."
Ellen blinked, a little taken aback by how quickly everything seemed to be moving. "Staying here?" she repeated, looking between Mason and Vivi.
Mason nodded, his expression firm. "Yes, and I’ve also hired a new set of security. They’ll be guarding the house, and I’ve arranged for a bodyguard to accompany you whenever you leave. I don’t want you going anywhere alone."
Ellen opened her mouth in surprise, her brow furrowing. "Mason, is that really necessary?" She could feel her pulse quicken at the seriousness of his words. Things had escalated far beyond what she had anticipated.
Mason’s gaze softened as he stepped closer to her, his hand gently resting on her arm. "It’s necessary, Ellen. We don’t know who broke into our home or why. Until we figure it out, I don’t want to take any chances."
Ellen swallowed hard, nodding slowly as she tried to process everything. "But a bodyguard? And security... it just seems like so much."
"It’s what needs to be done," Mason said firmly, his eyes locking with hers. "I don’t want to take any risks."
She could hear the weight behind his words, the protective tone that was so distinctly Mason. But it made her feel uneasy too, like something bigger was at play. The break-in hadn’t felt like a simple robbery, and now Mason was taking precautions as if there was a serious threat nearby.
Ellen sighed, glancing down at the floor for a moment before looking back up at him. "Where are you going now?"
"I’m heading to the police station," Mason replied, pulling his coat over his shoulders. "I need to follow up with them, see if there’s been any progress."
"Should I come with you?" Ellen asked, wanting to be part of whatever was going on, to help in some way.
Mason shook his head gently. "No, you should stay here. Let me handle this."
Ellen frowned, not liking the idea of being left behind, but Mason’s serious expression made it clear he was set on his decision. He didn’t want her involved. "Alright," she agreed, even if she didn’t really want to.
Mason gave her a brief but reassuring smile before heading toward the door. As he opened it, Vivi walked over to Ellen, her expression filled with concern.
"I was so worried when I heard what happened, Mrs. Coldwell," Vivi said, showing real concern. "I couldn’t believe someone would break into your home like that."
Ellen nodded, her arms crossing over her chest as she tried to shake off the lingering unease. "I can’t believe it either. It all feels so... surreal."
Vivi’s hand gently squeezed Ellen’s arm. "I’ll be here with you, okay? Everything’s gonna be just fine."
Ellen managed a small smile, grateful for Vivi’s presence, but as she watched Mason disappear out the door, a knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. Everything was happening so fast—too fast. Mason was doing everything he could to keep them safe, but that only made Ellen more aware of how serious this situation might be.
As the door closed behind Mason, Ellen found herself staring after him.
Is everything really going to be okay?
