Chapter 193: All Mess

Chapter 193: All Mess

Ellen’s heart raced as they turned the corner and their house came into view. The gate, normally closed and secure, was a bit open. The sight gave her a weird feeling, and she noticed Mason tense up beside her in the driver’s seat.

"What the hell... why is the gate open?" Mason muttered He slowed the car, eyes narrowing at the sight ahead.

Ellen stayed silent, her heart racing as she locked her gaze on the open gate. Something felt wrong—very wrong. Mason pulled into the driveway, and they both stepped out of the car. Just as they were about to approach the house, the sound of a car engine caught their attention. A police car pulled up behind them, lights flashing but siren off.

Ellen’s stomach dropped. The police? Why were they here?

Before she could ask, she saw a familiar figure running toward her from the sidewalk. It was Helga, her face flushed with panic. She hurried across the yard, practically throwing herself into Ellen’s arms.

"Oh, thank God!" Helga cried, her voice trembling as she hugged Ellen tightly. "I was the one who called them."

Ellen pulled back slightly, her brow furrowing in confusion. "Helga, what’s going on? Why did you call the police?"

Mason stepped forward, his expression serious, concern etched into his features. "Yeah, Helga, what happened?"

Helga looked between them, breathless, her eyes wide with worry. "I was on my balcony when I saw your gate open like that. At first, I thought maybe you had just left it open by mistake, but... then I saw someone."

Ellen’s heart skipped a beat. "Someone? What do you mean?"

Helga nodded quickly, her voice shaky. "Yes, someone came out of your house. I didn’t get a good look at them—it all happened so fast—but they left the gate wide open. And the security didn’t close it right away, which was weird. I just... I had a bad feeling, so I called the police. I thought something might be wrong."

Mason exchanged a glance with Ellen, his jaw tight. Ellen felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Someone had been in their house. Her home.

The police officers approached, one of them nodding toward Mason and Ellen as they stepped closer. "We’ll take a look inside and see what’s going on," one of them said.

Ellen nodded automatically, though her feet itched to move, to follow the officers inside. Her mind raced with a hundred questions, each one louder than the last. Who had been in their house? What had they been looking for? Was anything missing? Was anyone hurt?

As the officers headed toward the gate, Mason grabbed Ellen’s hand, squeezing it gently. "Stay here with Helga."

Ellen looked up at him, her eyes wide. "Mason, I want to go in with you."

"I know," he said. "But I need you to stay here, okay? I’ll go in and check it out."

Ellen hesitated, her gaze flicking toward the house again. Everything in her wanted to be there, to see for herself what had happened. But Mason’s eyes were steady on hers, and she knew he was trying to keep her safe from whatever mess was waiting in there.

"Okay," she whispered reluctantly.

As he disappeared through the open gate, Ellen stood frozen for a moment, watching him go, a knot of fear tightening in her chest.

Helga stayed close, wringing her hands nervously. "I hope it’s nothing serious," she said. "I just didn’t want to risk it... after seeing that person leave." Ellen nodded, not really paying much attention.

Minutes passed, and the uneasy silence around them only made Ellen more restless. She kept glancing toward the house. After what felt like an eternity, she couldn’t stand it anymore.

"I’m going in," Ellen said suddenly.

Helga’s eyes widened in alarm. "No, Ellen! Mason told you to stay here. You don’t know what’s in there!"

"I need to see for myself," Ellen replied. "It’s my house too. I can’t just stand here."

Without waiting for another protest, Ellen started toward the gate. Helga groaned in frustration but followed closely behind, clearly too scared to be left alone.

As soon as Ellen stepped into the yard, her eyes were drawn to the front door. The glass window next to it was broken. The door itself was damaged, deep marks scarring the wood as if someone had tried to force their way in. Her heart sank at the sight. Someone had broken in.

She pushed the door open wider, stepping inside cautiously. The living room was in chaos. The photo frames that had once lined the walls were now shattered on the floor, the vases she loved lay in broken pieces, scattered across the room. The couch was pushed aside, the cushions were thrown around messily, and the coffee table was turned on its side. Glass crunched under her shoes as she walked further in.

"You shouldn’t be in here," Mason’s voice cut through the silence, startling her. He was standing by the stairs, looking serious as he walked over to her. "I told you to stay outside."

"I couldn’t just wait out there," Ellen said. "I needed to see. This is our home too."

Mason sighed, running a hand through his hair. Ellen’s eyes swept over the destruction once more, her heart heavy with both anger and sadness. "What the hell happened here?"

"We don’t know, Ellen. The security wasn’t even around when we walked in."

One of the police officers stepped forward, his face serious. "It looks like a robbery," he said, glancing around the wrecked room. "But we’ll need you both to check if anything’s missing."

Mason nodded, his jaw tight. "Alright. We’ll check upstairs."

Ellen followed Mason as they made their way up the stairs, her heart pounding in her chest. They checked the bedrooms, the closets, the drawers. Everything was in disarray, but nothing seemed to be gone. No valuables missing, no important items stolen. It was as if someone had torn the place apart for no reason.

"This doesn’t make any sense," Ellen muttered as she surveyed the mess. "Why would they break in and not take anything?"

Mason nodded grimly. "I don’t think this was just a robbery."

Ellen felt a chill run down her spine as she looked at the police officer who stood in the doorway. "It wasn’t a robbery," she said, her voice quiet but certain. "They didn’t take anything. This... this was something else."

The officer exchanged a glance with his partner, his expression thoughtful. "We’ll look into it more," he said. "But for now, it’s best if you both stay somewhere else tonight. We’ll secure the house and continue investigating."
