Chapter 187: Words Unsaid

Gerald leaned against the steering wheel, the sun was blazing through his windshield as he headed to Mason’s office. His mind was all over the place, replaying the events of the previous night over and over in his mind.

He had laid it all out for Aubrey—his feelings, his heart—and the moment had left him raw, vulnerable, and unsure of what would come next. But now, it was time for a different conversation, one he couldn’t put off any longer. It was time to confront Mason.

As Gerald pulled into the parking lot and turned off the car, he took a deep breath, bracing himself for what was about to happen. He swung the car door open, stepping out into the warm afternoon breeze, and made his way to the tall building where Mason worked.

When he reached Mason’s floor, he found Philip standing outside, scrolling through his phone. Philip looked up and greeted him with a polite smile. "Hey, Gerald," he said casually, stuffing his phone into his pocket.

"Hey," Gerald replied shortly, nodding in acknowledgment but not stopping to chat. His mind was already focused on the upcoming conversation, the tension building in his chest.

He pushed open the door to Mason’s office without knocking. Mason, seated behind his desk, looked up with a raised eyebrow. The sun peeked through the blinds, warming up the room, but the atmosphere between them was anything but warm.

"I’d appreciate it if next time you knock," Mason said, his voice edged with annoyance as he leaned back in his chair, his eyes fixed on Gerald.

Gerald didn’t respond to the comment. His jaw was tight, and his expression serious—so unlike his usual playful demeanor. "We need to talk," he said, sounding serious, with his hands clenched beside him.

Mason let out a small, sarcastic chuckle, clearly unfazed. "Oh, really? I thought you came to ask me out for lunch or something," he joked, but his eyes showed curiosity as he noticed how tense Gerald looked.

Gerald didn’t smile, didn’t give any of his usual banter. Instead, he took a step forward, his eyes locking onto Mason’s. "So, it seems like you’ve made a decision," he said, keeping his cool, but the strain was clear in his every word.

Mason narrowed his eyes, sitting up straighter in his chair. "What are you talking about?" he asked, though it seemed like he was already aware. He knew exactly what Gerald was referring to.

"Aubrey," Gerald said bluntly. "You made a decision about her."

Mason’s expression shifted, his features hardening slightly as he leaned back in his chair again, crossing his arms over his chest. "Yeah," he admitted, the words coming out almost as a sigh. "A decision I should have made a long time ago."

Gerald’s heart pounded in his chest as he took another step closer, his fists clenching at his sides. "Do you know how much you hurt her?" he asked, his voice rising with barely contained anger.

Mason’s eyes flickered, his jaw tightening as he stared back at Gerald. "Yeah, I know," he said, his tone colder now. "That’s exactly why I did it. I don’t love her anymore, Gerald. That love—it’s been gone for a long time."

Gerald’s stomach churned at the words. Mason brushed it off like it was no big deal, acting like Aubrey’s pain didn’t mean anything. He took another step forward, his hands now shaking slightly as he struggled to keep his temper in check. "Why, Mason? Why did you drag it out this long if you knew? If you knew you didn’t love her?"

Mason’s eyes flashed with irritation, and he pushed his chair back, standing up now. "You really want to know why, Gerald?" he snapped. "Because I didn’t want to hurt her, okay? But I had to. Staying with her—lying to her—would have been worse. I did what I had to do."

Gerald’s fists clenched, his arms tensing up like he wanted to punch something—anything. But he held back, his voice coming out in a growl. "You didn’t want to hurt her?" he spat. "That’s all you’ve done, Mason. You broke her, and you don’t even care."

Mason scoffed, rolling his eyes in disbelief. "You’re acting like I’m some kind of villain here. People fall out of love, Gerald. It happens. I’m not the first person to end a relationship."

"But you didn’t just end it," Gerald shot back, his voice rising in intensity. "You dragged her along, made her believe there was still something there when you knew damn well it was over. And now, she’s broken because of you."

The thought of Aubrey’s hurt made him ball his fists, and before he could stop himself, he threw a punch. The punch hit Mason right on the jaw, making him stumble back into the desk. The sound was sharp, ringing around the room.

Mason looked up at him, his hand touching his jaw, his expression a mix of shock and anger. "What the hell, Gerald?" he spat, his voice hoarse with rage.

Gerald stood there, breathing hard, his chest heaving with the intensity of his emotions. His hand throbbed from the impact, but he didn’t care. He didn’t regret it.

"I don’t have anything left to say to you," Gerald growled, turning to leave. But just as he reached the door, Mason’s voice stopped him.

"You think you’re better than me, Gerald?" Mason called out, his voice full of bitterness. "You think you’re some kind of hero because you’ve loved her from the sidelines?"

Gerald froze, his hand on the door handle. He could feel his heart racing, with Mason’s words hanging over him.

"You’ve been in love with her for a long time, haven’t you? Even when we were still together." Mason went on, his voice softer now. "But you never said a damn thing."

Gerald’s hand tightened on the handle, his jaw clenching, but he didn’t turn around. He didn’t respond. Instead, he just opened the door and walked out.
