Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife
Chapter 16: Stop Her

Chapter 16: Stop Her

Ellen sat in the back of the taxi, her heart pounding and her breath coming in short, frantic gasps. She could hardly believe she had forgotten such an important detail in the story. Today was the day Aubrey would try to get close to Mason again!

She replayed the events in her mind as the taxi sped through the city streets. Aubrey had locked herself up, crying and wallowing in despair for a week after Mason married Ellen. But today, she would gather the courage to approach Mason again, hoping to rekindle their old flame.

Aubrey would go to Mason’s office, ask him to eat ice cream at their favorite place near their high school, and just as they were about to enter the store, a child would almost get hit by a car. Aubrey would save the child, even if it meant getting hurt. Mason would then bring Aubrey to the hospital, thinking she was brave and kind, and that’s how the old flame would start to rekindle. Mason would remember how much he loved Aubrey and their shared memories, leading him to miss her.

HELL NO! Ellen thought, gritting her teeth. She wouldn’t let that happen. She would do anything to prevent it, even if it meant abandoning her sister, who was probably mad at her for leaving so abruptly. Ellen hoped Colleen would understand without needing an explanation. She knew Colleen wouldn’t believe her even if she told her the truth.

"Can you hurry, please?" Ellen asked the taxi driver, her voice laced with urgency.

The driver, a middle-aged man with a kind face, glanced at her in the rearview mirror. "I’m going as fast as I can, miss."

Ellen nodded, biting her lip in frustration. It felt like the taxi was moving at a snail’s pace. If only she could drive, she would have asked the driver to trade seats with her, and she would push the gas pedal to the floor.

She leaned forward, her fingers tapping anxiously on the back of the driver’s seat. "I really need to get there quickly. It’s an emergency."

The driver nodded again, his expression serious. "I’ll do my best. Traffic is a bit heavy right now, but I’ll find a way."

Ellen leaned back in her seat, her mind racing. She couldn’t let Aubrey and Mason have that moment. She had to stop it. She had to protect her marriage, even if it meant playing the role of the villain in Aubrey’s story.

The driver took a sharp turn, causing Ellen to grab the handle above her head to steady herself. She could feel the anxiety building in her chest, a tight knot of fear and determination. Her mind flashed back to the mall, where she had frantically run through the escalator, bumping into people and apologizing as she went. She had to get to Mason before it was too late.

Ellen’s phone buzzed in her bag, but she ignored it. She knew it was probably Colleen, wondering where she had gone. She would deal with that later. Right now, all that mattered was getting to that ice cream place.

The taxi finally pulled up in front of the high school. Ellen threw some bills at the driver, not even waiting for change, and jumped out of the car. Her heart was pounding in her ears as she frantically looked around, trying to find the ice cream place. She spotted it across the street, its colorful sign standing out among the other storefronts. Ellen quickly scanned the area, searching for any sign of Mason and Aubrey.

Her anxiety spiked when she didn’t see them immediately. What if the accident had already happened? What if she was too late? She felt a surge of panic but forced herself to stay calm. She had to be here before them, she had to be.

With her hands balled up into fists, she stood there when a sleek black car pulled up to the curb. Ellen recognized it immediately as Mason’s. She watched as Mason and Aubrey got out of the car, and relief washed over her. She had made it in time. The accident hadn’t happened yet.

Her relief was short-lived, however, as she saw Aubrey quickly move to Mason’s side, standing so close to him that it looked like there was a magnet between them. Ellen’s eyes twitched with irritation. She couldn’t stand seeing Aubrey that close to Mason, knowing what the other woman was trying to do.

Just then, Ellen noticed a little boy starting to cross the road, oblivious to the car speeding toward him. Her heart leapt into her throat. "No!" she screamed internally. Without thinking, she sprang into action.

Ellen ran as fast as she could, her legs pumping with adrenaline. Time seemed to slow down as she raced toward the child. She could see the terror in his eyes, the car bearing down on him. She reached him just in time, pushing him out of the way with all her might.

The car grazed her side, sending her sprawling to the ground. The impact wasn’t enough to break bones, but it knocked the wind out of her and sent pain radiating through her body. She hit the asphalt hard, her vision blurring as she struggled to breathe.

She lay on the ground, her body aching. She could barely move, each breath sending a jolt of pain through her chest. The last thing she heard was someone calling her name, the voice distant and filled with panic. Ellen tried to focus on it, but her vision blurred, and darkness began to creep in at the edges.

She closed her eyes, the pain overwhelming her. Her last thought was Mason, hoping she had done enough to change the course of events. Then everything went black.
