Chapter 150: It’s Time To Talk

Ellen sat on the plush couch in Clara’s living room, sipping tea from a pretty porcelain cup. Clara sat beside her, her hands carefully handling a thick, worn photo album that rested on her lap. It had been a long afternoon filled with chatter about Mason, Gerald, and their families, but this moment felt particularly significant.

"I haven’t opened this in years," Clara said with a soft laugh, her fingers tracing the edges of the album cover. "But since we’ve been talking about Mason and Gerald so much, I thought you might like to see a few of these."

Ellen leaned in, intrigued. "I’d love to see them." She really just wanted to see Mason, not Gerald.

Clara smiled warmly and opened the album, revealing the first set of photos. The pages were filled with moments frozen in time—pictures from family gatherings, vacations, and special occasions. Ellen immediately spotted younger versions of both Mason and Gerald in several of the images.

"There they are," Clara said with a chuckle, pointing to a picture of Mason and Gerald standing side by side at what looked like a summer picnic.

Ellen’s fingers lightly brushed across the glossy surface of the old photograph, her eyes drawn to a young Mason. He was standing beside Gerald, grinning from ear to ear, a sight that felt oddly unfamiliar. His eyes were bright with a playful gleam, his arm casually slung around Gerald’s shoulder as if they didn’t have a care in the world. Mason, in this photo, was a stark contrast to the man she knew now—serious, brooding, and often distant.

"Wow," Ellen muttered, tilting her head slightly as she took in Mason’s boyish expression. "I can’t believe this is the same Mason. He looks so... carefree."

Clara chuckled beside her, her eyes soft with nostalgia as she gazed at the photo. "Oh, he was. Always laughing, always getting into some kind of trouble with Gerald. They were inseparable back then. I swear, if there was mischief to be found, those two would be right in the middle of it."

"He looks so happy here," she said softly, almost to herself.

Clara nodded, flipping to another photo. This one was of both families gathered together at what seemed to be a holiday dinner. They were all smiling, raising glasses, with the boys seated in the middle, clearly the center of attention.

"We spent so much time together back then," Clara said with a wistful sigh. "The Coldwells and the Greys. It was always like one big family. Holidays, birthdays, you name it. We did everything together."

Ellen leaned forward, her eyes landing on a younger Gerald in the photo. He must have been around five or six, grinning widely as he sat in front of a large birthday cake. His chubby cheeks and wide, mischievous smile made him look absolutely adorable. She stared at him for a moment, eyebrows raised in disbelief, silently judging the boy in the photo.

Seriously, how did he change from this cute little guy to someone who’s set on making my life tough? Ellen mused to herself, her lips curling into a smirk. Gerald had spent his time doing everything he could to interfere in her relationship with Mason, clearly pushing Aubrey back into the picture at every opportunity. But that was fine. She could handle him, no matter how sneaky or irritating he tried to be.

Clara flipped the page, showing another set of group photos, but neither of them noticed how quickly the time had passed. Ellen suddenly realized they had been there for hours, flipping through memories and chatting about Mason and Gerald. Time had slipped by, and she hadn’t even noticed.

Sitting up straighter, she glanced at Clara, something more serious settling in her mind. Now seemed like the right time—maybe even the perfect time—to bring up Gerald’s interference in her marriage. She trusted Clara, and maybe, just maybe, Clara could help her smooth things over.

"Clara," Ellen started. "There’s something I think I should tell you."

"Yes, Ellen?" Clara asked gently. "What is it?"

"It’s about—"

But before she could finish her sentence, a familiar voice cut through the air. "I’m here, Mom!"

Ellen’s words froze in her throat, her eyes snapping to the doorway as Gerald walked in with a grin on his face. His smile was bright and genuine, but it faded almost instantly when his eyes landed on Ellen sitting on the couch.

Clara stood up quickly, not noticing the change in her son’s expression, her face lighting up as she walked toward her son. "Gerald! Oh, it’s so good to see you, my boy." She opened her arms wide, pulling him into a warm hug.

Gerald returned his mother’s embrace, but his body tensed slightly, his eyes darting back to Ellen. The warmth in his expression melted away, replaced by a brief flash of annoyance. As soon as Clara stepped back, Gerald’s gaze lingered on Ellen, his mouth tightening.

Ellen plastered on her best smile, pushing down the irritation bubbling up inside her. If he wanted to act like a spoiled brat, that was fine. She could play the game, too. "Gerald!" she exclaimed, her voice dripping with fake enthusiasm. "It’s so great to see you! What a nice surprise!"

Gerald’s eyes narrowed, clearly unimpressed with her cheerful act. His lip curled slightly in disdain as he crossed his arms over his chest. "Yeah, surprise," he muttered. "What’s she doing here, Mom?" he asked, barely hiding his disdain. He ignored Ellen completely, directing his question at his mother as if Ellen didn’t belong there.

"Gerald," Clara said, her voice soft but tinged with disbelief. "Why are you speaking to Ellen like that?"

He ignored his mother’s question completely, his eyes locking onto Ellen as if she were an intruder in his personal space. Without responding to Clara, he took a few steps forward, his arms still crossed over his chest.

Ellen stayed in her seat, her body tensing as Gerald walked closer. She forced herself to maintain a calm expression, but inside, her heart raced. This wasn’t the first time she had encountered Gerald’s hostility, but it was the first time it had been so direct, so openly aggressive in front of his mother.

"You’re not welcome here," Gerald said coldly. His eyes locked onto hers, sharp and full of bitterness. "You better leave. Right now."
