Chapter 131: Wedding Anniversary

The hotel’s grand entryway sparkled with elegance, a scene fit for the high-profile guests that would be attending Gerald’s parents’ 30th wedding anniversary. Walking beside Mason, Ellen felt the importance of the moment. She was dressed in a stunning emerald green gown, the off-the-shoulder style highlighted her figure in just the right way, and her hair was swept back in an elegant updo. Mason, dressed in his sharp black suit, looked every bit the definition of class, calm but commanding.

As they made their way into the ballroom, Ellen’s eyes wandered around the luxurious venue. They sure know how to host a party, Ellen thought, marveling at the opulence. She had done her homework before coming tonight, learning as much as she could about Gerald’s family. They were just as powerful as Mason’s parents—both families had built vast business empires, their influence stretching far and wide. It didn’t surprise her that the two families had been friends and business partners for years, with their children, Gerald and Mason, following in their footsteps.

As they walked, Ellen glanced up at Mason, his face unreadable yet focused. Her hand then gently resting on Mason’s arm, remembering the last time they had attended a party like this.

"I’m not letting you wander off on your own again," Ellen said with a playful smile, her voice carrying just a hint of warning. "Remember Paris? I still haven’t forgiven you for disappearing into the crowd that night."

Mason’s lips curled into a small smile, amusement flickering in his eyes. "I wasn’t wandering off," he said smoothly. "I was networking."

Ellen rolled her eyes but kept her smile. "Networking, right. Well, not tonight. I’m sticking with you. You’re not leaving me to fend for myself again."

Mason chuckled softly, his deep voice barely above a murmur. "I seem to remember you weren’t entirely alone. Edrick was there, wasn’t he?"

Ellen huffed, the memory of Edrick flashing in her mind. "Well, he won’t always be there to save me from the loneliness of being left by my own husband," she joked, pretending to be offended, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she looked up at Mason.

They continued walking, passing through the large double doors that led into the ballroom. The room was breathtaking, with high ceilings draped in soft, shimmering fabric, and tables arranged elegantly with crystal glassware and candle centerpieces. The walls were lined with tall windows, allowing the city’s lights to spill into the room, adding to the grandeur of the evening. Waiters moved seamlessly through the crowd, offering trays of champagne and tiny appetizers, while the elegantly dressed crowd socialized and shared laughs.

Ellen glanced down at the small bag she held in her hand, feeling a slight wave of nervousness. Inside was the gift she had brought for Gerald’s parents—something she had spent a considerable amount of time choosing. She hoped it would be well-received. Her fingers brushed over the soft leather of her purse as she thought about how much effort she had put into it, wanting to make sure it was both thoughtful and appropriate for the occasion.

Mason, noticing her brief moment of hesitation, glanced at the purse and then back at her. "Are you sure about the gift?" he asked, his tone casual but laced with curiosity.

Ellen looked up at him, a playful glint in her eyes. "Don’t worry," she said confidently, "I’m not going to embarrass you. It’s perfect."

Mason raised an eyebrow, the corner of his mouth twitching in amusement. "I wasn’t worried about being embarrassed," he said, his voice low and teasing.

As they approached the gift table, Ellen couldn’t help but glance down at her purse again, hoping the gift she had brought would stand out in the right way.

As Ellen and Mason continued walking through the grand ballroom, the crowd seemed to part just enough for them to spot the stars of the night—Gerald’s parents, Richard and Clara Gray.

Dressed elegantly, the couple radiated charm and grace, effortlessly commanding the attention of those around them. Gerald’s father, with his salt-and-pepper hair and a sharp suit tailored to perfection, stood next to his wife, who was in a stunning silver gown that sparkled under the soft lighting. They were engaged in conversation with another pair of guests, but their eyes soon fell on Mason and Ellen approaching.

Ellen could feel a slight shift in Mason’s posture beside her as he straightened up, a subtle sign of respect and familiarity. She took a breath, her own nerves settling into a calm that she had learned to adopt in these social situations.

As soon as they made eye contact, Gerald’s parents excused themselves from the conversation they were in, their faces lighting up with warm smiles. Gerald’s father, Richard, was the first to approach, his arms open wide as he immediately pulled Mason into a firm hug.

"Mason! So good to see you, son," Richard greeted him with a broad smile, his deep voice filled with genuine warmth.

Mason smiled, his arm clapping Richard on the back. "Good to see you too, Richard. Congratulations again on the anniversary," Mason replied with a respectful tone.

Ellen stood back slightly, observing the interaction. She had seen Mason in so many different settings, but there was something unique about how he carried himself around Gerald’s family—less guarded, more at ease. It was like watching him reconnect with his family.

Next, Richard’s wife, Clara, stepped forward, her face glowing as she embraced Mason just as warmly. "We’re so glad you could make it," she said, her voice soft yet joyful. "It wouldn’t have been the same without you here."

Mason smiled again, nodding. "Wouldn’t miss it for the world."

Then, Clara turned her attention to Ellen, and for a brief moment, Ellen felt the usual pang of nerves that came with meeting such influential people. But Clara’s warm expression quickly put her at ease. "And you must be Ellen," Clara said, extending her arms toward her. "It’s so wonderful to finally meet you."

This was their first meeting, as Ellen couldn’t recall seeing them at the wedding. They were probably tied up with work or something.

Ellen smiled as she accepted the embrace, hugging Clara lightly but sincerely. But before Ellen could respond, there was a slight commotion from behind, and both she and Mason turned to see Gerald and Aubrey making their way over to join the group.
