Reborn As Mr. Coldwell's Wife
Chapter 127: Welcome Home

Chapter 127: Welcome Home

Ellen sat cross-legged on her bed, staring at her phone with a focused expression. The screen displayed Mason’s contact information, saved exactly as he had typed it the day before: "Mason Coldwell."

Her fingers hovered over the edit button, a smile tugging at her lips as she tapped on it. With a quick swipe, she erased his full name and replaced it with something far less serious: "Husband."

She giggled to herself, shaking her head at the absurdity of it. "Husband," she murmured under her breath, a ridiculous, almost childish sense of humor creeping in. The fact that they’d been married for months and she had only just now gotten his phone number made it even funnier. Not that she couldn’t have asked Philip for it before, but... well, getting it from Mason himself made it feel more personal.

"Husband," she whispered, clutching her phone close to her chest. She tossed her phone onto the bed beside her, leaning back against the pillows. She felt giddy, like a teenager with a crush.

But then her gaze returned to the phone, the urge to message him bubbling up in her chest. Should I? She hesitated, biting her lip. It wouldn’t hurt, right? Besides, he had given her his number—surely, he wouldn’t mind.

Her fingers moved quickly as she typed a message:

"Hi Mason, it’s Ellen. Just wanted to send my number so you can save it :) "

She stared at the screen, feeling her heart race just a little faster than it should. It was silly to be nervous about texting him, but here she was, staring at the message, debating whether to send it. With a deep breath, she hit send, tossing the phone aside quickly as if she were afraid of the response.

She sat there for a moment, staring at the ceiling, trying to keep her thoughts from wandering back to the phone. He’s probably busy already, at meeting or something. She reassured herself that he wouldn’t reply right away.

But then, the phone vibrated. Her head whipped around, eyes wide.

Already? She grabbed the phone and saw a message from Mason:

"Saved."

That was it. Just one word. Ellen smiled, rolling her eyes at how typical it was for him to say as little as possible. But the fact that he replied at all made her heart flutter slightly. She typed back quickly:

"What did you save it as?"

She waited, watching the dots appear on the screen, signaling that Mason was typing. Her lips twitched into a small smile, a few seconds passed before her phone vibrated again. She couldn’t help but laugh softly at the response:

"Ellen Winters."

Ellen’s smile widened, a soft chuckle escaping her. "Tsk, so formal," she muttered to herself, imagining Mason’s serious face as he typed those words. It was so him. But it made her heart warm in a way she hadn’t expected.

Without hesitating, she typed another message:

"Any requests for dinner tonight?"

She tapped send and waited, twirling a strand of hair around her finger absentmindedly as she leaned back against the headboard of her bed. It didn’t take long for her phone to buzz with Mason’s reply. She quickly opened it, only to find one word staring back at her:

"Anything."

Ellen frowned, narrowing her eyes at the screen. She could almost picture Mason saying it with that casual indifference of his, but she wasn’t about to let him off that easily. She typed another reply, smirking as she did:

"So it’s okay if I prepare stones for you to eat?"

She hit send and waited, fully expecting some kind of response. But the minutes ticked by, and nothing. No dots indicating he was typing, no reply at all. Ellen sighed dramatically, tossing her phone onto the bed. Of course, he’s done now, she thought with a small laugh.

Later that evening, Ellen sat in the living room, her legs tucked under her on the couch as she absentmindedly flipped through channels. The TV flickered with images, but her mind was elsewhere, as it usually was around this time. She was waiting for Mason to come home.

She glanced at the clock on the wall, noticing that it was nearly time. A small flutter of anticipation stirred in her chest, though she quickly pushed it down. She didn’t want to seem too eager, even to herself.

Moments later, she picked up on the sound of a car engine she’d grown used to. Ellen immediately sat up straighter, her heart giving a little jump. She quickly turned off the TV, hopping up from the couch to meet him. She waited by the door, a small, welcoming smile already forming on her lips as the door swung open.

Mason stepped inside, looking just as composed as ever, though there was a hint of weariness in his eyes. He saw Ellen standing there, looking at him closely.

"Hey," she greeted, her voice soft as she looked up at him. "Tired? Do you need anything? Tea, maybe?"

Mason glanced at her, a bit surprised by her sudden attention. He raised an eyebrow, studying her face for a moment before answering. "Yeah, a bit," he answered.

Ellen continued to watch him, her smile widening slightly. Mason noticed it and paused, his brow furrowing as he crossed his arms. "What’s going on?" he asked, his tone cautious. "Why are you smiling like that?"

Ellen blinked, genuinely confused. "What do you mean?" she asked, tilting her head as she tried to figure out what he was talking about.

Mason narrowed his eyes, as if trying to solve some kind of puzzle. "Did you make trouble or something?" he asked, his voice serious but with a hint of suspicion.

Ellen couldn’t help but laugh, shaking her head in disbelief. "So it’s wrong for me to smile now? And to care about my husband?" she asked, teasing him as she stepped closer. "I’m literally just trying to be a good wife. Isn’t that what you want?" Her tone was playful, but there was a warmth behind her words.

Mason shrugged, though his expression softened slightly. "Well..." he trailed off, clearly unsure of how to respond.

Ellen crossed her arms, her lips forming a mock pout. "Bet this would make you happy," she said, her voice laced with amusement. She stepped closer, standing on her tiptoes as she leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to his lips. She whispered against his mouth, "Welcome home."
