Chapter 114: Thanks For Today

Chapter 114: Thanks For Today

They continued to wander through the aquarium. The tunnel they entered was breathtaking, with fish swimming above and beside them, creating the illusion that they were walking beneath the ocean itself. Ellen’s excitement hadn’t faded a bit. She was mesmerized by the graceful creatures that glided above her, especially the stingrays that seemed to float effortlessly through the water.

Suddenly, Ellen stopped in her tracks and turned to Mason, her eyes sparkling with an idea. "Hey, Mason! Take my picture!" she said, already pulling her phone from her pocket and handing it to him without waiting for his response.

Mason raised an eyebrow but took the phone from her, watching as Ellen positioned herself beneath the arch of the tunnel. Ellen struck a playful pose, her arms spread wide as if she were embracing the ocean world around her. Just as Mason was about to snap the photo, a stingray floated directly above her, its wide wings casting a shadow over her head. Ellen’s eyes lit up as she glanced upward, a wide, delighted smile spreading across her face.

Mason snapped the picture, silently appreciating the way her happiness seemed to radiate outward. He took a few more shots before lowering the phone, walking toward her. "How did it turn out?" Ellen asked, bouncing slightly on her feet, her excitement bubbling over.

Mason handed her the phone, a faint smirk on his face. "You can see your face in there," he teased, clearly avoiding the compliment she was hoping for.

Ellen rolled her eyes, but her smile remained as she took the phone back. "Gee, thanks," she muttered, though she couldn’t help but feel a little giddy as she glanced at the photos. They had come out better than she expected.

They continued walking, passing various tanks filled with exotic fish and sea creatures. Ellen couldn’t resist stopping at each one, pointing out the different animals like a tour guide, while Mason followed along.

Eventually, they reached the gift shop, and Ellen’s eyes lit up as soon as she spotted the display of plush toys near the entrance. Without hesitation, she made a beeline for a large, soft shark plush sitting on the shelf. She picked it up, holding it in her arms as if it were the most precious thing in the world. "This is so cute!" she exclaimed, hugging the plush to her chest.

Mason watched her, one eyebrow raised. "You do know you’re a grown woman, right?" he asked, his voice laced with amusement. "Why are you buying stuff for kids?"

Ellen pouted slightly, looking down at the plush shark in her arms before glancing back up at him. "It’s cute," she said defensively. "And besides, it won’t be a waste. One day, I can give this to my child."

Mason’s eyes narrowed slightly, a mischievous glint appearing in them. He stepped closer to her, leaning in just enough to lower his voice as he whispered in her ear. "Shouldn’t you say our child?" he corrected softly, his breath warm against her skin.

Ellen’s face turned a deep shade of red almost instantly. Her heart skipped a beat, and she quickly jerked back, her hand flying up to cover her ear as if to block out his words. "Lalala, I’m not listening!" she said, her voice rushed and flustered, as she turned away from him, trying desperately to hide her embarrassment.

Mason’s low, rumbling laughter filled the space around them, surprising Ellen. She turned to look at him, her hand still pressed against her ear, and what she saw made her pause. He was laughing—really laughing. Not the usual sarcastic chuckle or dry humor she was used to, but a genuine, full-bodied laugh. His eyes crinkled at the corners, and his shoulders shook slightly as he tried to stifle his amusement.

For a moment, Ellen could only stare. It was the first time she had ever seen him laugh like that, and the sight was... mesmerizing. There was something about it that made her chest feel light, like she had just done something truly special. She had made him laugh—really laugh. And it wasn’t because of some forced joke or awkward situation. It was because of her.

Ellen’s mind still lingered on the sight of Mason laughing as they made their way back home. The memory of Mason’s carefree expression stuck with her, replaying over and over as she gazed out the taxi window.

When they finally reached home, the quiet of the evening settled in. Ellen stretched slightly as she stepped inside, glancing over at Mason, who was locking the door behind them.

She made her way toward the hallway where the stairs were. Just as she got to the first step, she heard Mason’s voice came through. "Ellen," he called, stopping her in her tracks.

She turned around, slightly surprised. "Yeah?" she asked, tilting her head slightly, wondering what he needed.

Mason didn’t respond immediately. Instead, he walked toward her with steady steps, his gaze never leaving her face. Ellen felt a sudden wave of nervousness as he approached, unsure of what was happening. Her heart began to race, her palms growing slightly damp as Mason closed the distance between them.

When he reached her, he didn’t say anything at first. Instead, his hand gently cupped her cheek, his thumb brushing lightly across her skin in a way that made her breath catch. Ellen’s eyes widened, her body stiffening as her mind raced to catch up with what was happening. Was this real? Was this really happening?

Her thoughts scattered completely when Mason leaned in, their faces so close she could feel the warmth of his breath on her skin. His eyes held hers for a brief moment before he whispered softly, "Thank you... for today."

And then, before Ellen could even process his words, his lips were on hers.

The kiss was soft, gentle, but it sent a shock through Ellen’s entire body. She stood frozen at first, her heart pounding wildly in her chest. Mason’s hand on her cheek felt warm and grounding, while his other hand subtly slid into hers, slipping something into her palm.

Mason pulled away slowly, his lips hovering near hers for a second longer before he stepped back and went up the stairs, leaving Ellen there.
