Chapter 312: Chapter 313: The Child Runs Out Calling Daddy Chapter 312: Chapter 313: The Child Runs Out Calling Daddy Pei Chengye felt a cold sweat break out upon hearing The Emperor revisit past events.
Could it be that Father has noticed something? But he quickly suppressed this fear.
No, that couldn’t be.
The Zheng Family had taken all the responsibility. Father shouldn’t know anything, but because of this, he didn’t dare to say anything more.
And there kneeling nearby, not convinced, was Pei Jingyi, who hadn’t expected Father to make such arrangements. Even so, he managed an excellent facade.
No one could tell he was dissatisfied; instead, his lips held a trace of worry, as if he were truly concerned for The Emperor’s health.
The Emperor glanced at them and said, “You two need not be disheartened. In a few days, I will arrange other duties for you.”
“Yes, thank you, Father.” The two of them bowed and said.
Even if they were dissatisfied, they could only bear it silently.
Shao He, standing to the side and looking down at his toes, was well aware that The Emperor’s gesture was meant to silence the masses, but suspected the duties would not be as good as imagined.
As she pondered this, she suddenly saw Xiao Linzhang stumble over, and it was too late to stop the child.
He ran to Pei Huaian, tumbling into him and tenderly called out, “Daddy, Daddy.”
This crisp voice stunned everyone present, and they all turned to him with shocked expressions.
Shao He was taken aback, having not expected the child to appear in such a setting, calling Pei Huaian “Daddy.”
Pei Huaian’s eyes shone with anticipation, a hint of hope in his eyes for the child’s identity to be revealed.
The rest of the people had varied expressions, and The Emperor’s eyes shone brightly, staring intensely at the chubby child.
Shao He composed her panicked expression and calmly walked over to pick up the child, apologizing sincerely, “I’m sorry, the child has grown up without a father and mistook the Fifth Prince as his after seeing him a few times.”
The hopeful expression on The Emperor’s face fell, and he said with some disappointment, “I have yet to hold a grandchild of my own.”
Looking at the delightful child, he slowly gestured with his hand, “Bring him here for me to see.”
Shao He brought the child to the bedside, envy in her heart as she looked into those clear eyes, such a wonderful child, it was a pity he wasn’t his grandson.
“Grandpa, Grandpa, you’re sick,” Xiao Linzhang announced, pointing his plump finger at the person in bed.
This gesture made The Emperor even more fond of him. Had it not been for the silver needles all over his body, he would have risen to embrace the child.
“Such an endearing child. I must reward him; how could I not when he’s so adorable?”
The Emperor instantly gave a generous gift: a jade pendant of immense value, something only people from the Royal Family could wear, showing just how much he adored the child.
“You should settle down and quickly take a Principal Wife, or even a Concubine or Consort will do, so I can hold a grandchild sooner rather than having to envy others for theirs,” The Emperor urged, his words carrying a heavy seriousness.
The Princes looked at one another, none daring to make a sound.
Pei Chengye sarcastically said, “I had no idea that Doctor Shao’s child was so impressive, even finding himself a father–could it be he has his eyes on the status of the Fifth Prince?”
“Or perhaps he seeks to rise to greatness through this opportunity? Or is there someone instructing him to do so? Otherwise, how could a child say such things?”
Shao He’s eyes cooled slightly as her lips curled into a faint smile, and she said softly, “Children are naive and uneducated, unaware of what is appropriate to say in a situation like this. I ask for Your Majesty’s and the Princes’ understanding.”
The implication aimed at Pei Chengye was clear to everyone–though they struggled to contain their laughter, no one pointed it out.
Pei Chengye felt something was off by everyone’s expressions but couldn’t figure out why.
After a moment, he realized Shao He’s words were indirect criticisms.
A flicker of anger rose in his eyes, and just as he was about to retort, Pei Huaian beat him to it, “Second Imperial Brother, don’t mind it, and don’t argue with an uneducated child. You, as a Prince, should be more magnanimous.”
“Yes, it’s just a child,” The Emperor added.
With this, Pei Chengye, who wanted to explode with rage, could only suppress the fury building within him, clenching his fists at his side. Why did Father always favor Pei Huaian?
Why could he be allowed to read petitions in the study, and even Pei Haolan, but not himself?
“Everyone may leave; I am tired,” said The Emperor, indeed feeling worn out. He was unsure how much longer he could endure.
He also wondered what would become of his Princes after his death–whether they would turn on each other, which was the last thing he wished to witness.
“This son bids farewell.” The Princes bowed and left the room,
While Shao He remained to remove the silver needles from The Emperor. Observing Xiao Linzhang beside her, quiet and well-behaved, awaiting his mother, The Emperor suddenly commented, “Seeing the child reminds me of the Fifth Prince as a boy. They resemble each other greatly and both are exceptionally sensible and well-behaved.”
Shao He wanted to offer some explanation, but feeling that it might only make things worse, she eventually closed her mouth.
Having taken care of everything, Shao He finally turned, child in arms, and left the room.
She headed straight for the neighboring courtyard to figure out why the child had suddenly run next door.
