Chapter 297: Chapter 298 The Fourth Prince Seeks an Audience Chapter 297: Chapter 298 The Fourth Prince Seeks an Audience In the Fifth Prince’s Mansion, Shao He heard the news while she was walking in the garden with Xiao Linzhang.
“Butterfly, butterfly.”
Xiao Linzhang, pointing at the butterfly on the flower, walked over excitedly. As soon as he got close, the butterfly took off.
“Butterfly, butterfly.”
Xiao Linzhang wanted to reach out and grab it, but he toppled forward. Luckily, Shao He promptly caught him, preventing an intimate encounter with the bluestone.
Pei Huaian lightly tapped his feet and soared up, catching the fluttering butterfly in mid-air and presenting it to Xiao Linzhang.
Xiao Linzhang broke into a delighted smile, his eyes brimming with wonder as he looked at the butterfly in his hand.
Ah Mo came over, carrying tribute silks, and respectfully bowed to Shao He, “Doctor Shao, these are all fine silks. The master has asked you to choose a color you like to make clothes for you and the young master.”
Shao He glanced sideways at the person playing with the child, her lips curving into an involuntary, faint smile,
Then turned her head to continue perusing. She raised her hand, caressing the fabric; it was soft and silky, and extremely light–indeed, it was made from the finest silk.
Ah Mo, seeing that Shao He did not respond, dared not say more and retreated to one side to wait.
After a moment, Shao He pulled a pale sky-blue silk from the pile and said, “Let’s go with this color.”
“Yes,” Ah Mo took the chosen fabric and then carried away all the silks.
Shao He gazed at the distant pavilions and towers, a strange emotion budding in her heart.
As she was lost in thought, a vibrant flower was placed on her head.
“Pretty, mom, pretty,” Xiao Linzhang said, clapping hands and giggling in Pei Huaian’s embrace.
Pei Huaian pinched his son’s soft, tender cheeks, his eyes full of indulgent warmth.
“Mom, mom… pretty…”
Xiao Linzhang was tickled into fits of laughter.
Shao He snapped back to reality, looking up at Pei Huaian and found him staring at her, her ears turning red.
Pei Huaian reached out to tuck a strand of hair on her cheek behind her ear and said softly, “It is indeed very beautiful.”
While the family was enjoying their time together, a guard came forward to report, “Your Highness, the Fourth Prince requests an audience.”
“Pei Jingyi? What does he want?” Pei Huaian furrowed his brows in surprise.
“Could it be that he’s seeking your protection? After all, he has offended the Second Prince and the Empress this time. If he wishes to protect himself, he must surely seek to align with someone,” Shao He analyzed.
Upon hearing this, Pei Huaian pondered for a moment and then shook his head, “But the Zheng Family has already fallen, and the Second Prince and the Empress should not do anything to him for now.”
“We’ll know if we see him. I’ll take the child to our room first,” Shao He said, taking Xiao Linzhang and heading towards the room.
She and the child’s identity should not be exposed for now, lest someone see him in the Prince’s mansion and arouse suspicion.
Pei Huaian watched them go back to the room before telling the guard behind him, “Please invite the Fourth Prince to the garden.”
At the same time, he ordered the servants to prepare tea and pastries, and he sat in the pavilion to wait; soon, the guard brought Pei Jingyi to him.
Seeing the person in the pavilion, Pei Jingyi sat down with a smile, “Brother, your mansion is as tranquil as ever.”
“I have always preferred peace and quiet, with no wish for too many attendants around,” Pei Huaian commented indifferently as he poured a cup of tea and pushed it across the table to him.
“How have you been recently, younger brother?”
“Not bad. I spend my days drinking tea and attending to court affairs; nothing much else,” Pei Huaian said, holding his tea cup and taking a delicate sip.
He looked at the hesitant man and asked, “What brings Imperial Brother here today?”
Pei Huaian did not want to exchange pleasantries any longer and went straight to the point.
Pei Jingyi forced a smile and said, “As you also know, I inadvertently dragged the Second Imperial Brother down with me this time, and he probably won’t let it go easily.”
“The Zheng Family has already collapsed, and with the Second Imperial Brother being confined, he shouldn’t do anything to you,” Pei Huaian pretended not to understand his underlying meaning.
Pei Jingyi’s grip on the teacup tightened, a bit anxious as he said, “This time, it was all the Second Prince’s scheme, aiming to bring you and me down. Fortunately, we were able to clear your name in the end.”
“I have come to visit specifically because I hope to cooperate with you, for no other reason than self-preservation.”
Pei Huaian now understood why he had previously chosen to bring down the Zheng Family; it turned out that his earlier actions were a form of pledging allegiance to him.
Looking into those clear, sincere eyes, Pei Huaian picked up his tea cup thoughtfully. He didn’t believe Pei Jingyi genuinely wanted to side with him,
And he didn’t believe that Pei Jingyi truly intended to give up that position. After striving for so many years to get closer to that position, investing so much effort and hardship, it was unlikely he’d just give it up.
“Imperial Brother is taking this too seriously. The recent incidents were not your fault. If anyone is to blame, it’s the Zheng Family for being audacious enough to use the Second Prince’s name for private minting,” Pei Huaian said, feigning ignorance.
He was uncertain of Pei Jingyi’s true intentions, but one thing was certain–Pei Jingyi only wanted him to be a pawn in the crabs’ and clam’s strife so that he could gain from it.
Pei Jingyi, realizing his feigned ignorance, didn’t get angry but instead ingratiatingly said, “With your wisdom, dear brother, you must surely understand what I mean, and I will surely regard you as my leader in the future.”
