Chapter 294 - Chapter 294 Chapter 295 Interfering with Court Affairs
Chapter 294: Chapter 295: Interfering with Court Affairs Chapter 294: Chapter 295: Interfering with Court Affairs Pei Huaian, upon hearing her agreement, became elated beyond compare, and took her into an excited embrace, twirling around with her in his arms.
“This is wonderful, you have finally agreed!”
He had never felt such joy before, his long efforts had at last paid off.
Pei Huaian hugged the woman in his arms tightly, wishing he could pour all his tenderness into her, now that she was truly to become his wife.
Before, they had only harbored feelings for each other, but now they had become each other’s most intimate partners.
Pei Huaian set her down and kissed her lips gently, his eyes gazing at her with deep affection, “I really hope I can bring you into my home soon!”
“I only agreed to try, but you must withstand the test as well, otherwise…”
“I will definitely not let you down,” Pei Huaian had never felt so fortunate. He always believed that heaven had been cruel to him, taking his mother at an early age and later crippling his legs.
These events had knocked him down time and again, making him feel as if his existence was not a blessing.
Yet heaven had bestowed upon him this great gift–the chance to meet her.
She was like an angel who had descended by his side, shining with a sacred light, redeeming the darkness and despair.
And he would give his all to protect her and their child, to cherish them, to keep them safe, ensuring they were always joyful and carefree.
Shao He, seeing the man whose eyes were filled with fervent passion, warned again, “But you must not expose the child’s identity and add to the danger.”
“I understand.”
Nowadays, the Empress and others were watching him like predators; exposing the child’s identity at this time would indeed make them turn their attention to the child. Shao He’s concerns were not unfounded.
Ever since Shao He had agreed to be with him, Pei Huaian had shamelessly awaited at home every day.
Shao He had been entering the imperial palace for several days to treat The Emperor, not visiting Anji Hall, and returning earlier than usual.
Pei Huaian prepared tea for him thoughtfully and handed it over, asking, “How is Father The Emperor?”
“The Emperor’s health has noticeably improved, and he should be able to recover in a few days, but after that, we will need to start acupuncture treatments.”
After finishing, Shao He drained his cup of tea in one gulp.
Pei Huaian, hearing that Father The Emperor was out of danger, finally relaxed completely.
Within the imperial palace, the Empress carried a bowl of freshly stewed porridge into The Emperor’s chamber, helped him sit up, and blew on the porridge to cool it before bringing it to his lips.
The Emperor took a few sips but had little appetite, “Put it aside for now.”
“Why don’t you have a few more sips? You have hardly eaten these past few days, Your Majesty. How can your body bear it?” the Empress coaxed softly.
The Emperor waved his hand dismissively, his gaze softening considerably when looking at her, having grown much thinner because of his illness.
“I can’t eat anymore; I want to rest for a while.”
“Then this consort will stay and talk with The Emperor,” she said.
“Hmm.”
The Emperor nodded and leaned back on the bed, closing his eyes, pretending to sleep.
Seeing this, the Empress handed the bowl of porridge to the nanny by her side and then deliberately spoke in front of The Emperor, “All the princes are extremely filial, anxiously concerned about your illness.”
“Chengye is now in the prison, copying scriptures and praying for you, hoping that you will recover soon.”
The Emperor glanced at her indifferently, aware of her intentions, and said coldly, “The Second Prince has the support of the Zheng Family and is becoming increasingly lawless. How can we allow this to go on?”
“This time it’s about illicit Silver. What about next time? There’s no telling what might happen, and the Zheng Family, too, is of no use, not even advising him against such extravagance!”
In The Emperor’s words lay the implication that only Pei Chengye or the Zheng Family could be spared.
One was her own family, and the other her biological son; she was unwilling to give up either.
“The Emperor, this time the Fifth Prince has been almost wronged. I feel deeply remorseful about him, but after all, the responsible person is from the Fifth Prince’s camp, making it hard to withstand the various public opinions.”
Her words seemed to be pleading on behalf of Pei Huaian, but what they actually conveyed was dissatisfaction with The Emperor’s favoritism; although the responsible person was Pei Huaian’s man, he had not been imprisoned.
She had also always felt that although The Emperor usually did not show much regard for Pei Huaian, he was always especially biased toward him whenever issues arose, which greatly displeased the Empress.
The Emperor glanced at her coolly and said in an icy voice, “I know the responsible person is the Fifth Prince’s man, but he has only recently returned from the battlefield and could not possibly be involved.”
“Casting private Silver is not something that can be completed in a short time; it requires a large amount of Silver to be melted down, as well as manpower and resources. Do you think the Fifth Prince can accomplish this while not in the Capital City?”
A trace of unwillingness flashed in the eyes of the Empress, who then said, “Even if the Fifth Prince is not in the Capital City, he could have others…”
“The responsible party has already confessed. Does the Empress desire to know more?” The Emperor interrupted her mid-sentence, not giving her the chance to continue.
Encountering The Emperor’s icy gaze, the Empress swallowed her words, knowing The Emperor was warning her that the harem must not interfere in state affairs.
“The Emperor, please forgive me; your consort had no intention of meddling in state affairs.”
The Empress immediately knelt down, and the Palace maid and nanny behind her also knelt down with her.
“Rise,” said The Emperor with a cold voice.
Only then did the Empress get up and sit back down in her chair.
